Reynolds fired

My thought

Reynolds was set up by Tony and Frank to ease Frank into retirement, and maybe Reynolds needed another season or two of seasoing.

We likely needed to make the move quickly for the portal. I suspect there's a fish already on the hook
In his defense, he was left a lot of mid bullpen arms. Last year we had three guys cracking 100 and several others in the mid upper 90s. Wayyyy too much emphasis on holding runners. Frank didn’t let his pitchers pitch in front of shifts. All that analytics BS needs to go. Still, it looked like hot garbage out there and he’s the one common denominator.

Well, Frank isn’t the pitching coach for the Giants he’s more of a front office and development role. Anything is possible but I think Posey will give Tony more than one season to adjust. However, if Frank did get canned, that wouldn’t happen till late in the year and this decision for our next pitching coach will be made in the next few weeks.

Frank is close to retirement anyway, so I’m sure Elander wants to go younger.
I mean they knew that roster would suck too. Its not like the Giants were on the brink. I really dont get everyone acting like the Giants being bad is surprising that roster is awful.

True but then then you have guys like Arvidson and Krenzel, who looked very promising at times last season, look significantly worse this season.

Hard to guess where to go when it comes to baseball coaching vacancies but could we steal one of these guys?

All fact.

Impressive.

If you are pitching with a shift behind you, you don't want your pitchers throwing too many outside pitches to keep guys from accidentally hitting to opposite field. A good batter with good coaching will know he no longer has to worry about half the plate.

You still need to hold runners though. In 2022- when we lacked a true catcher, it was ludicrous and the staff ERA would have been even smaller with any attempt to hold runers.

It’s a terrible roster. If Tony gets fired after one year, it would he ridiculous because they did not set him up for success. They basically hired him without making any upgrades in free agency to a putrid 40-man. I think Posey is way more in over his head than Tony, and Tony hitching his wagon to a team run by his buddy may ultimately be his downfall.

You never want to be happy about someone losing their job, but this was the right move and it gives me a bit more confidence in Elander that he can make tough decisions. Good start to the off-season.
True, but I'm shocked Elander made the move after one season. Hope the hire is made soon. Portal pitchers might be a tad hard to pull to Knoxville without a pitching coach.

I fear Tony will return to the SEC with the fire of a thousand suns. He hated losing a game at UT, let alone a series. I still think this whole Giants thing was partly a way for Tony to get around leaving UT for Arkansas. I think he had too much love and respect for the program to have done us like that, but ultimately, Fayettenam is where he'd like to land. Just my uneducated thoughts...

I would think Missouri for a complete garbage dumpster rebuild job would catch Tony's eye. Missouri REALLY screwed up when they passed on Today before.

UM would not only need to really pay Tony and assistants but would absolutely commit to baseball like they have never really committed to ANY sport.

Since joining the SEC, Mizzou has been nothing but lackluster people, making lackluster decisions, for lackluster fanbase. Football is their only real success -early on at least, and that was due to joining the SEC East when Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia all tanked at the same time. It's no coincidence that Missouri, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt had their only real success at that time.

I think Tony’s love for Arkansas is overstated. He’s from St. Louis and went to Mizzou. Arkansas was just a stop on his coaching journey like any other school. I can’t guarantee he won’t end up there, as it could happen just out of circumstance with him getting fired. But you don’t take a Major League Baseball job with the intention and hope of landing at Arkansas one day.

Coach E made the right decision but screw it. I want Tony back and move E back to associate head coach. Pretend it never happened. All is forgiven. Now my baseball world is complete.
nah. Our end of season run (regional play aside) was much better under E than in Tony's last season. It's time to support the coach and stop with this Tony non-sense. We all know how that story is going to end for him, and it's going to be in a red jersey calling the hogs.

Absolutely, but when you take an MLB job, you do so knowing that if it doesn't work out, you can almost certainly land back in college baseball without much difficulty. He also had to be aware of the likely timeline surrounding DVH's eventual retirement.

I remember asking friends for advice about a job opportunity that felt risky but had tremendous upside. Their response was simple: you have very little to lose by taking the chance because you can always return to a position comparable to the one you already have. I've always thought that mindset was probably part of Tony's calculation as well.

In 2-3 years (maybe sooner) he'll be back in college at a major program. Doesn't have to be Arky, but it very well could be. It would not shock me if Arkansas, UF, Vandy (yuck), and A&M all came open at some point within the next few years, and there's always a chance of a surprise retirement that catches everyone off guard (e.g., what if Jay Johnson won another title at LSU and hung it up)?

Earley already seems like he's in pretty hot water in College Station. Corbin is a legendary coach, but he's also 64, has nothing left to prove, and hasn't made it out of Regionals since 2021. If a job TV wants opens back up, I think he'd just leave SF in a heartbeat unless they suddenly turned things around.

Bingo. likely why TN hit so many batters. Focused on inside 1/4 of plate means hitters put arm / elbow guards on, crowd the plate and don’t worry about outside corner which could lead to backside hits against the shift. You have to use entire plate and the black corners to be successful pitching in the SEC IMHO.

Ding...ding...ding. Gives you waaay more room for error. As good as some staffs are they are still not comparable to a MLB staff, control wise, and MLB staffs don't have to worry about the extreme shifts anymore.
