I have been reading all of the forums on here, on ESPN, listening to all of the media outlets and all it spells is gloom/doom for this upcoming season. I disagree with that prognosis. Here are my reasons why...

1. Everytime UT has been ranked at the top in preseason polls they have stunk it up...2002 and 2008 come to mind.

2. This team will be prepared. I think Dooley, Chaney and Wilcox will have them ready in all facets of their game.

3. This team will have a chip on their shoulder and be out to prove everybody wrong.

I dont think Vols will contend for the SEC this year, but I do believe they will overachieve, something we as fans have not seen in a few years. I think they will be in every game. I think VOLNATION needs to have faith and believe that some big upsets will be in the making this season....

GO VOLS!!!!!

Failing to deliver when you have the goods is hardly evidence that you will when you don't.

although i hate to, i do agree with this statement... that being said i still believe that we will do alot better this year than everyone thinks... we will beat a couple teams that no one thought we would... Oregon being the first

I am confident that the vols will have a great season. Many people will mock me for this, but I think UT goes 8-4 during the regular season. The 4 loses being LSU, Alabama, FL, SC or GA.
Last year we were 7-5 at the end of the regular season, but 3 of those games should have been won: UCLA, Auburn, Alabama. If Kiff's play calling wouldn't have screwed us in those 3 games, we would've been 10-2. Think about it... We are TENNESSEE no matter what the critics think!

Oh, and to lawgator, you should know all about failing to deliver when you got the goods...ahem, 2009 SEC Championship...

LG, you missed the point. If a) the experts were soooo off in 05, or b) that team underachieved that much, then why can't a) the experts be off this year, or b) we overachieve (to a lesser degree)???

So, you're saying that there's clearly no evidence that UF is gonna get it done this year w/o Tebow, correct? :)

Ahh, just bustin' your chops. I agree that particular logic isn't sound. But I think we will be better than advertised for a few primary reasons.

#1 - Like the OP, I think that it's become 'fashionable' to declare how bad UT will be this year. All of the 'experts' are falling all over themselves to agree with each other that UT will be terrible. Each guys has to say it a little more over the top to get any attention and I think it's gotten to a point where the rhetoric is outdistancing the evidence. Besides, they said all the same things last year and we were 1 made FG (out of 3 misses/blocks) from beating the NC. And UF didn't beat us by what, 50, like advertised beforehand, either. 'UT will be terrible' was overblown last year. Not arguable.

#2 - We have many more playmakers than we had last year on offense. Our top 4-5 Wide Receivers are better than our best one was to start last season. Partially for that reason, I personally think that Simms will be better than Crompton, at least thru the first 5 or so games. Georgia is relying on two true freshmen at QB and everyone seems to think they'll fine (I contend that's evidence that the case against UT is overblown. JC junior at UT and Freshman QB = terrible QB situation. Two Freshmen QB's at UGA = much better than UT, at least. All that = Not logical.)

#3 - New DC is going to create some problems for people. We don't have EB, but we've got some guys in the secondary that would like to break you in two and who might just do it. If you've got a couple of headhunters back there, it can change the attention span of the opposing WR's enough to matter. Better linebacking than last year, most likely, and better defensive ends for sure. Chuck Smith might just know something about DL play and that could come into play.

#4 - Special teams coach has a good track record and last years special teams at UT were atrocious. I'll believe it when I see it, but there is room for tremendous improvement here.

You make some really good points.

#1 - The national media doesn't have time to study the nuances and particulars of every team, so they often base predictions on one or two pieces of information.
#2 - I am glad Crompton got better, but he made me extremely nervous
#3 - Hope he throws some different looks at people that will take them some time to adjust.
#4 - We haven't been good on Special Teams in a while. It will be nice if we can make some plays there (We beat Cal a few years ago if we can actually tackle Desean Jackson).

lawgator didn't miss the point, he's just a gators fan stirring the pot....

I think we have the chance to surprise people this year, and that we will be SLIGHTLY better than expected

If we could take fatigue and injuries out of the equation and only have to play our starting defense, we would be really good in my opinion. Our problem is not necessarily with our starters but with the lack of depth brought on by the recent attrition. If we had all of the players that had committed to the Vols over the last four years still on this team, we would compete for the SEC East. The sports writers never cared for the Vols when we were good, but right now they just don't care at all. They take up for some teams and downplay their shortcomings, but I think what they are saying about us is probalby just the honest truth. They are definately not taking up for us, but I don't think they are adding anything to the pot. We really just don't have enough play makers to compete this year. This is just my opinion, and I truly hope the the Big Orange proves my scepticism wrong.

tennessee will be starting a 250 lb defensive tackle who has had an allergic reaction to the playing field since he has been in school.

it will be a long, long year folks.
