My biggest fear is that Currie will hire Charlie Strong just because Texas let him go.

What's interesting to me is that everyone that mentions an up and comer never mentions Bill Clark at UAB. The guy was a stud at JSU and then when he got to UAB had them bowl eligible in his first year(2nd time ever as a program). This caused Univerity of Alabama boosters to press board of directors to shut down the UAB program. Now the Blazers are 4-2 and judging the remaining schedule will probably finish 8-4 maybe 9-3. This is after a 2 year layoff... He may not be the right guy for us, but by God, that is coaching. Something Sgt. Carter wouldn't know about.

If we hire an up-and-comer I wish they would take a close look at Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo. He's done wonders with that program.

Mike Norvell has been fine at Memphis, but I really don't see anything remarkable that would warrant a big promotion to the UT job

He gets the most out of his players, that's for sure. Right up there w Snyder

Given the history of the SEC teams hiring retread SEC coaches (see Orgeron, Houston Nutt, Spurrier, Muschamp). If you had to pick one from the list below of “retreads” or “up-and-comers”, which is your preference?

If Spurrier wanted to coach here, I’d roll out the carpet. He wouldn’t win the natty anymore, but given how far he took USCe, we’d be a much better coached and developed team and ready to take the next step when he handed over the reigns in a few years. It’s much more difficult to maintain your status at USC than in Knoxville, so I don’t begrudge him his last year there.

Other than that, no bums unless we’re in a bad spot and hired Cutcliffe, who would have us competing if not beating the big guys, and he would have us ready to take a step up in a few years when he stepped down.

Spurrier quit USC because he had no talent there and he hates losing. He would be an interesting hire at UT.

Interesting that folks are divided over Les Miles and Petrino. Petrino's scheme is an easy fit given our roster. When looking at Miles you'd have to ask who would we get for an OC?

Butch Jones > Charlie Strong

Had we ponied up more money to keep Strong from saying no, we are much better we are currently with Butch. That's a fact.

We also win the SEC East as well.

Plus the pronunciation of his name might drive Kesling into retirement early. Win - win

If we can't get Patterson or Peterson, and I doubt we can, get Kelly or Kiffin. I'm not sold on Kelly because I think Tennessee would be just a job to him. He is worth serious pursuit--but is he a fit? Kelly had the good stretch at Oregon but that could have been a one-off: he had a great QB; there is not a lot of recruiting competition in the Northwest. Say what you want about Jones, but he loves the Vols--and that is a great quality to have in a coach.

Kiffin would want to redeem himself for Tennessee fans, IMO. Kiffin can coach QBs and offense, and he knows both the SEC and Tennessee VERY WELL. That is important, in my view. Both he and Kelly would surely do well recruiting.

After those four maybe Petrino, but has best years may be behind him. That is certainly true of Miles.

Coordinators are a roll of the dice. You might hit a 7 or you might get snake eyes. Better to go with a guy who's been a head coach.

Peterson/Patterson
Kiffin/Kelly

Why would Kiffin want to redeem himself at Tennessee? Especially since he’d have to face his old boss twice if he wants a chance to win the SEC.
