Retirement of Nick Saban

Saban will coach until he either passes Paul Bryant for overall championships (6) or he eclipses that mark at one school. He has often said that he would coach as long as he had that drive in him too.
Some mention 3 losses in a season and how BAMA fans would turn on him. His 2010 squad went 10-3 and was perhaps his most talented team ever. He dealt with complacency, injuries ( yes, we had some untimely injuries too), Garcia playing the absolute best game of his career, an OT loss at LSU, and the Barn comeback with Cam. That led him to come back hungrier in '11. The tornadoes that struck Tuscaloosa in the Spring of '11 cemented his family in Tuscaloosa and in the hearts of BAMA fans.
He could step away at the end of the season and I honestly doubt any BAMA fan would complain.

I've always speculated maybe he was the worst coach to ever win an SEC Championship. I still get a chuckle out of the fact that he beat Spurrier twice in one season

Shawn Alexander won the 1999 SEC Championship. Just like Cam Newton won the 2010 SEC and National Titles. Dubose and Chizik just happened to be there.

Saban is going after Byant's NC record IMO. When he gets 7 NC's, he'll be satisfied.

I hate to say it, but we probably should pull for them to win the NC this year to get him at 6. The sooner he breaks it, the sooner he can be gone.

Here's what I think could happen to Alabama. In a couple of years, Saban retires. They hire Dabo, who keeps recruiting at the same level as Saban did but loses a couple of games a year, or wins the West and loses in SEC Championship games, to the extreme frustration of the Bammers. After a few years of being really good but not great, they controversially fire him despite winning 10 games/year.

Their next hire is a disaster, and they go into football purgatory again.

Do you guys realize that Saban has had six #1 recruiting classes in a row? How can anyone beat that? What Alabama is doing is a once in a life time deal and it will soon be over. Saban is 64. He can't coach forever and when he leaves so does Alabama. Recruits don't go there because it's Alabama, they go because of Saban. Until he retires, this is how it's gonna be. I CAN'T WAIT!!!! Go Vols

I take it you don't know many Bama fans?

Paterno coached till he was 84. That would be 20 more years. Maybe we should be figuring out how to beat him instead of wishing he would retire.

If he stays that long I'm not worried.

JoePa sucked the last 15-20 years of his career

I think Saban will level out once Kiffen moves on. I am thinking Kiffen will definitely get some opportunity at a "mid-major" this off-season, like maybe Fresno or SJSt, heck maybe even Purdue

I want to beat Bama bad. I hate bammers every Saturday during football season. But I think everyone who is honest knows Saban is a generational coach. He is one of the all time greats at recruiting, putting together a staff, and developing players.:hi:

But waiting on him to retire is going to be a decade probably. So that's not realistic. We have to figure it out. Butch shouldn't be fired for losing to Saban. Ever. But Butch should beat Saban at least once in a while. We will get the better of him sooner than later. We are on our way.

Ridiculous. Saban has won national titles with Jimbo Fisher, Jim McElwain, Doug Nussmeier and Lane Kiffin

I could see him coaching til he is 70.

Yep, this guy hung around Tuscaloosa for quite a while.

Headline gave me a dose of false hope! I honestly don't think Saban will stop until he absolutely cannot go on. He doesn't seem like a pleasant person to be around so I am counting on the wife not letting him retire.

Not so...before Kiffin, Saban was struggling to beat spread teams, losing to Auburn, got lucky to beat Texas, when they knocked out Colt McCoy. You watch. After Hurts, the retirement talk will start up, the recruiting will start to decline, because of his age, next thing you know he's Bobby Bowden.

Can you say Dabo Sweeney next in line at Bama?

At some point, he'll lose his edge in recruiting. Every coach recruiting against him will be telling players that he's so old he has to be about done. Asking them if they want to go to Alabama only to be there during a coaching change.

I'm sure that some are already trying it, but at some point, it will start sticking. It has to. It happened at Penn State. It happened at Florida State with Bowden.

Father Time is undefeated.

Two thoughts:
1. As long as Bama recruits well and is an position to compete for titles, Saban isn't going anywhere. Unless he literally dies, he will coach Alabama and improve upon his legacy unless the recruiting dries up.

2. Alabama is so flush with cash after all this winning that they will be able to land whatever coach they want to replace Saban. It may or may not work as well, but it won't be because they went and hired a coach from Cincinnati who was 4th or 5th on their wish list.

Saban only goes away if somehow the tide go a couple years without making it to the SECCG. Or they begin to lose regularly to Auburn.

Dangit OP!!!! You had me hoping from the thread title. Ban worthy IMO.

Nick will content when he gets to 10 titles---more than any other coach could ever achieve.

Bill Snyder is still coaching at 77. Bobby Bowden coached till he was 80. Joe Paterno coached till he was 85.

Saban doesn't seem the type to retire early. He didn't like coaching in the NFL. His health appears good. He has a cushy setup at Bama, with the boosters, media and half the state in his pocket. He's the Don of the SEC. He could be at Bama for another 20 years.
