First, let me start by saying I will probably butcher this grammatically so I apologize beforehand.
I have done some film breakdown (very little as of right now) on the Florida game and have come away from watching the game once through already.
There is an efficiency rating that teams get that basically states whether you are gaining enough yards per down to be "efficient" 1-10 is 4yards and 2-3 to 6 is three yards etc... Basically in the grand scheme of things it averages to about four yards a play.
So what I came away with was that we were about 35-37% percent efficient on 1st down in the first half... (which is pretty bad)
2nd down we were roughly about 52% efficiency rating for the game, while we were only about 20% in the first half... (So what happened on second down?)
Well, we started putting Tyler Byrd in motion which then created a horizontal stretch advantage and a personnel advantage for us and we found a hidden gem on 2nd and 7+ in the first quarter with a double slant concept known as "tosser" in the first fee minutes of the game that picked up about 10+yds for us.... So we had that in our back pocket.... (Remember that)
So which brings me to third down we didn't have a ton of them, as we only ran 12 which is a fair amount. Now we basically ran 11 personnel ( 1 RB/ 1TE) the entire game or roughly about 80- 85% of the time (I count Ethan as a tight end but he was in the "sniffer" or H back postion) so honestly it depends on what you call him.
However on third down we ran 10 per. 3 times, 12per. 1 time, 01per. 1 time, and 11 per. 4 times.
Now in the second half we killed on third yard average because of the 30-40 yd TD pass to Malone (remember that "tosser" concept or double slant) but without that we were averaging about 9-10 yards on third down.
The other things I noticed were we got Dobbs more involved in the game with QB lead and two Zone Read plays in the Third and two more in the Fourth. I think the crucial element in our success was (besides the lack of 7 drops in the first half) we started to manipulate the defenders leverage and out flank them which turned out opening up the middle for Hurd (I know he is a quitter) as the game went on. Now I haven't been through other games and I only watched the Telecast version so I didn't get to see hardly any pass concepts. However, the game wasn't as dramatic as it seemed because there were soooo many points left on the board from drops and a couple errant throws that kept points of the board. Lastly, the game was awesome and I am sure glad we got that monkey off our back. I just wonder if butch and his staff will go back and look at tape (I know they will) and see some opportunity for some more jet action or sweep because that is how we killed florida and we have the back in John Kelly to do more of it. Go Vols!
