Report: Tennessee working on extension, raise for Butch Jones

College football analyst use butchs name when discussing terrible coaching. They say so and so channels his inner butch jones. Ya...he deserve a raise. Lol. Hart? Wow. That's what happens when you hire a life long bammer to run your football program. Maybe the U.S. Should look for a up and coming Taliban to be our next general. Makes about as much sense

I have a different take on Butches coaching decisions. As Clint once said, " A man has to know his limitations". Butches limitation this year was not having the talent to control the offensive line. You don't go for it on 4th and one if you don't think your horses have the push to get you that yard. You run mis direction, traps, slants, short passes, options...etc. which gives your line the opportunity to succeed. Look at LSU's game plan against Alabama's versus Butches. LSU tried to ram it down their throats, while we did a lot of mis direction. So...listen to analysts and be entertained, or understand the game.

I'm not necessarily against Butch getting an extension, but at least let him win something meaningful first. The guy's signature wins at UT is against South Carolina & Georgia. If that makes a man deserve a raise and an extension - what are they going to do for him if he wins the east; give him a lifetime contract?

His current contract is thru 2020 with an $8+ million buyout. That's pretty close to lifetime already.

don't think he's worth more than $3.6...

Dabo Swinney is at $3.3... probably deserves a raise

Rich Rod is at $3.2...

Helfrich AFTER playing in national title is at $3.1...

Todd Graham at ASU is right at $3...

Just named coaches I'd rather have for cheaper than CBJ's current contract.

If he's increased to even just $3.7....

I'd prefer both Gundy at OK St and Dantonio over CBJ.

I'm pro Butch Jones. I think he's done a great job with a decimated roster. He's built us into something that alumni can be proud of. we are no longer the laughing stock of the SEC. we were in close, close games with 2/4 CFP teams.

That is miles ahead where dooley left us. So pay him if you must to keep him.. but i sure do wish we had a coach that would want to stay at tennessee for what is a more than fair salary. i question butch's loyalty to the university when we're giving him raises that don't make much sense unless he's flaunting offers from others in the AD's face. no way to know if that's happening... if it is, he won't be at tennessee forever anyway.

if tennessee wasn't worried he'd consider other offers THIS OFFSEASON, it makes zero sense to pay the guy more than he's being paid when he coached an 11-12 win team into an 8-9 win team. JUST my opinion, of course. i get that some people think it's smart to pay him more now than later if say, texas or some other massive program comes after him... but why don't we wait until that actually happens and deal with it then... better believe he's going to get a pay raise anyway if that does happen. there is way more risk that he flops again next year in big games than him being poached by some program thats more attractive/ a better job than tennessee (there are only a few of those in the country and mostly based on preference).

He deserves to be paid better than 10th in the SEC.

Butch is in a sweet spot in the SEC as far as comp. Coaches avoid the middling SEC jobs cause it's going to be a graveyard eventually for 80% of the head coaches.

was having this argument with a mizzou fan. i think it's a matter of preference whether you'd want to coach at a school in the sec or to be the best in say the ACC.

with the college football playoff i think it's more likely you'd want to be at a school like florida state rather than an SEC school. but you do most likely have to run the table there to get into the CFP.

i think most coaches who want to be great think they can win anywhere and would welcome the challenge of the SEC. gotta beat the best to be the best.

We definitely need to pay Butch. Its so easy to get a dummy like Dooley. I don't want to go back to five and seven every year. LSU thought they were going to get Jimbo Fisher or Jon Gruden. I don't think they could even have gotten the Houston head coach. USC hired the interim guy. If Butch had left, Dino Babers would have been the best available. Georgia will hire Kirby Smart but he is a gamble.

Even if we were headed to Atlanta this weekend, he hasn't done enough to justify another extension with raise. We've already given him a contract that will probably match his shelf-life

The way I remember the 90's is that the national and state media endlessly insulted our head coach and Tennessee fans spent a lot of time complaining. I think Butch is headed for great things, lets be more appreciative this time. And remember it's going to be more of a challenge to get back to the top, because the SEC is more competitive than it was in the 90's.

He deserves to be paid better than 10th in the SEC.

i can't name very many sec coaches that are paid more than him that i don't think are better coaches or less deserving...

maybe Bielema?? I can also see more upside to CBJ currently than Richt but it remains to be seen whether he's a better coach.

Spurrier and Saban are some of the greatest of all time... I think Sumlin and Malzahn are offensive geniuses. Les Miles also fantastic...

Hugh Freeze can at least beat alabama and recruit. Dan Mullen I'm not real sure about but he seems to have done more with less at Mississippi state. Pinkel same thing and clearly a defensive mastermind.

So yeah. I mean when you have those types in your conference, the best in college football, I do think he's probably about where he should be.

I have to wonder if you are employed, and if so, what your employer thinks your shelf life is.

Apologies jakez4ut, I didn't mind the raise either. It's the buyouts that piss me off.

This times a million, the buyout for termination is out right ridiculous! The buyout to go somewhere else decreases by a million every year so how is that protecting UT?

Hard,
Saban without question is worth whatever they pay him. Correct here

Spurrier is not applicable, he is drunk on a golf course somewhere because the stress of the SEC and his craptastic team ran him off from the game. His record was trending downward in SEC.
Incorrect

Richt, well let's check the unemployment line for him as well. He just "Richt" a couple of games every year, and even though some on here do not want to hear it because of their hatred for CBJ, they see that UT and FL are improving and Richt could not get it done when we have both been down and saw no way for him too when we are getting stronger. Incorrect.

Sumlin, Malzhan, Miles - REALLY have you looked at the way they are trending on W vs L over the last 3 years. That is why everyone of them may very well lose their jobs by this time next year. Heck Les only kept his because of the media dogging LSU. UGA did theirs on the sly and avoided the media firestorm. Incorrect

Hugh Freeze can coach and deserses the money, not sure how much the bag men are responcible for his success. Correct

Mullin, might be the best coach in the league after Saban. Correct.

CBJ IS TRENDING UP ON WINS PAY THE MAN OR SOME OTHER TEAM WILL.

Will Butch Jones ever match Mark Richt's win/loss record at Georgia?
I have some doubts, but you never know
Go Vols

I'm not so sure about that

what 2025 with a 20 mil buy out or some crap like that. he is bigger than anything at the university. they will never be able to buy him out. all this for a coach that is a great recruiter, but hasn't shown he can win in the sec. this makes no sense.
