Report: Tennessee working on extension, raise for Butch Jones

I think people loose track of what a salary means to a man who makes 3.6 million. Money becomes an indicator of success, not something you need to buy lunch. Butch has done a better than average job and was a few plays away from doing an incredible job. He has been working very hard and it is to UT's best interests to keep him motivated. A small raise is a pat on the back and "good job". No raise would be a slap in the face. When the headhunters call, you want him to say "not interested in talking". If he does not feel appreciated, it will be.."sure, I'm always willing to listen to an opportunity".

If Butch was bumped to $10,000,000/year starting tomorrow... he's still going to be talking to them when the head hunters call.

I can't stand all this knee-jerk reaction crap... make the guy earn it a little more, like showing consistency in coaching for an ENTIRE season, maybe get to the SEC championship game, then it could be argued.... but now is too soon.... he has improved, but there have been lumps all throughout this season that has not sold many on his ability to get it done every year in the SEC.... If he delivers in 2016, an extension would be deserved....

College football analyst use butchs name when discussing terrible coaching. They say so and so channels his inner butch jones. Ya...he deserve a raise. Lol. Hart? Wow. That's what happens when you hire a life long bammer to run your football program. Maybe the U.S. Should look for a up and coming Taliban to be our next general. Makes about as much sense

I disagree. Talking seriously about opportunities takes time and has the risk of it getting out to recruits that you are thinking about a change, which hurts recruiting. People don't spend the time looking for a new job if they are happy with the job they have.

Then Butch goes all Cuonzo on our sorry asses.

How much was Butch making four years ago and why wouldn't he be happy with the multiple of that now?

Reward Butch and the staff for terrific work ethic and reconstructing the worst team in the SEC to the top of the league. Reward them now. Vols will curb stomp UF in Neyland in 2016 and will beat Bama. Enjoy this run and the brick masons that put it together.

Check out what Florida is losing on defense and their returning roster and have a few laughs!

Give Hart an extension also. The man has done a great job.

Only thing shameful is the massive ignorance out of our fanbase. Glad this is getting done before the asking price changes for college coaches with all of the openings.

Yep, because Georgia will be bringing the Brinks truck to Butch's house otherwise. Dave Hart and a segment of people on this board are the only people dumb enough to think he's in demand elsewhere.

My opinion, if he finished 5th or 6th in the SEC, make him the 5th or 6th highest paid coach (in the SEC). Move it according to the final standings. If he ever reaches #1, well, good for everybody.

Actually they use the last coach's name that made a mistake. The list was long this year - week to week there was a different coach on the hot seat for something he didn't do but those who have never coached a day in their life thought the coach should have done. It gets old after a while.

That's what I said this morning. Pay for performance rather than potential performance. The system is broken however.

Your ignorance on the topic is amusing. If the guy is 10th highest paid coach in the conference and finished 5th, wouldn't it stand to reason to pay him accordingly? If not, eventually some other university will see the guy is underpaid based on his performance and he will move on. Leaving us once again looking for a coach. That's the way it works. Educate yourself before using words such as 'dumb' or any other insult putting yourself in a position you don't belong in.

don't think he's worth more than $3.6...

Dabo Swinney is at $3.3... probably deserves a raise

Rich Rod is at $3.2...

Helfrich AFTER playing in national title is at $3.1...

Todd Graham at ASU is right at $3...

Just named coaches I'd rather have for cheaper than CBJ's current contract.

If he's increased to even just $3.7....

I'd prefer both Gundy at OK St and Dantonio over CBJ.

I'm pro Butch Jones. I think he's done a great job with a decimated roster. He's built us into something that alumni can be proud of. we are no longer the laughing stock of the SEC. we were in close, close games with 2/4 CFP teams.

That is miles ahead where dooley left us. So pay him if you must to keep him.. but i sure do wish we had a coach that would want to stay at tennessee for what is a more than fair salary. i question butch's loyalty to the university when we're giving him raises that don't make much sense unless he's flaunting offers from others in the AD's face. no way to know if that's happening... if it is, he won't be at tennessee forever anyway.

if tennessee wasn't worried he'd consider other offers THIS OFFSEASON, it makes zero sense to pay the guy more than he's being paid when he coached an 11-12 win team into an 8-9 win team. JUST my opinion, of course. i get that some people think it's smart to pay him more now than later if say, texas or some other massive program comes after him... but why don't we wait until that actually happens and deal with it then... better believe he's going to get a pay raise anyway if that does happen. there is way more risk that he flops again next year in big games than him being poached by some program thats more attractive/ a better job than tennessee (there are only a few of those in the country and mostly based on preference).

it makes sense if only because of the current landscape of college football...there's a dozen jobs open, so before anything is used as leverage, go ahead and get it done. probably cost less to do it now, and you save yourself from being in the rumor mill.

despite what some will have you believe, there are schools out there that would love to take a run at a guy that can bring in top 10 classes get your program to minimum 8 win level....

Like LSU and Georgia. They are so happy with 10 win seasons and top 5 recruiting classes.

I'm not necessarily against Butch getting an extension, but at least let him win something meaningful first. The guy's signature wins at UT is against South Carolina & Georgia. If that makes a man deserve a raise and an extension - what are they going to do for him if he wins the east; give him a lifetime contract?

Butch is in a sweet spot in the SEC as far as comp. Coaches avoid the middling SEC jobs cause it's going to be a graveyard eventually for 80% of the head coaches.
