I feel that there may be hard feelings from most of the fan base.

Probably a percentage on message boards but many weren't aware of the potential hire. And of those that were, several didn't even know who Thomas was.
Would be a nice addition but I have absolutely no hard feelings.
No reason to.

My concern is two fold:

#1, I was getting the feeling that Thomas was a part of an attempt to have a support staff that was similar to Alabama's. Obviously, they are doing something right that the rest of college football is not. It is not like Saban, by himself, is so much better than everyone else. Losing him, and finding out that this was more Fulmer's idea than Pruitt's, makes me wonder if my assumption about Pruitt's plan was wrong.

#2, my understanding was that Thomas was going to be a really big help in recruiting, especially in the increasingly more crucial mid-state area of Tennessee.

I understand that Pruitt has other people who he has already pegged to do a lot of what Thomas was going to be doing. So, maybe my #1 may not be an issue.

On the surface, it looks like bad misstep, but only time will tell. For all we know, the fallout may be minimal to none.

The support staff is Alabama's contribution to the football arms war. It's an end around to the coaching limits because they can delegate to the support staff responsibilities that fall to the coaching staff elsewhere, freeing up the coaches from collateral duties.

The extra staff also falls under the two sets of eyes are better than one concept. Amazing what a competent person not on the firing line can pick up and recommend solutions for - he just can't do it directly on the playing or practice field.

There's the recruiting angle, too. Tracking, evaluating, and keeping in touch with prospects.

But the most interesting Alabama angle is hiring displaced coaches an keeping them in stock - lose an OC - just pull one off the shelf - next man up. Depth in the coaching bench. True to Alabama history, locking up talent at AL keeps that talent from being used against AL. Takes care of mid-season calamities, too.

It's probably just a matter of time before the NCAA realizes it either has to address the support staff size, too; or just turn college football into a combo wild west - US/USSR cold war arms race.

Oh well. Let’s get to recruiting now. Not sure how I feel having a GM anyways and if I hiring one he’s going to do what I want....

I feel like this was largely overrated....

Move on and let’s let Pruitt handle this the way he’d like with the people he’d like. IMO the idea of Thomas being a GM as a necessity is like the guy from office space that was the people person!

The problem here is pretty simple. College head coaches are control freaks. The GM position actually runs the football program while the Coach runs the team. Which isn’t bad because it takes a lot of responsibility off of the coaches plate so all the coach has to do is coach and recruit.

I think adding a GM adds structure and oversight. An extra level of checks and balances. At a huge program with as much money as we have. That’s necessary but people barely want New Jersey’s so i don’t expect them to think ahead with something as big as this.

Sounds like the dual ladder concept that I've never seen actually work. The technical, operations, nuts and bolts people usually wind up not having time to fight the political battles, so the business side wins and screws everything up because they don't know anything about the nuts and bolts.

Lol

Most of you would not have known the difference between Dave Thomas and Austin Thomas a few weeks ago

Now you're melting down

Classic

Right. It woulda been nice to have him. But it’s far from break or make.

Agreed. Just because we didnt get this one guy, Pruitts staff still seems very good imo. You cannot get everyone you want.

How can this be true? Not believing this![/QUOTE

I trust Doug Mathews. I believe it's in UTs best interest to NOT create this position at UT nor bring him aboard. Too many Chiefs is never a good thing....

I believe it....i just, i mean. !!! I cant believe this crap! Maybe that captures my feelings a little better.

Not concerned in the least. We can do our own analysis of recruits etc. I just mean the nonsense of reporting it was done.

Doug is not the type to report any nonsense and easily backs away from uncertainty and isnt afraid to say "i dont know...we will see" Much respect for him

I got a Bad Feeling Fulmer is the Football Coach & Pruitt is his Lackey Yes Man- If True this will make the Butch Jones Era look like the Golden Age of Tennessee Football...

Well that was both quite an escalation and a lot of unnecessarily capitalized words.

Well, I heard they has 10 front line players suspended for the year because of the credit card situation. That affects your depth just a little.

Guess Florida needed a GM, or at least a team thug/babysitter.
