Reminiscing On Bray's Throws vs JG's Throws

Bray had a hell of an arm. If you put him on a solid team with sound coaching, he would've done really well in college. Unfortunately he had Dooley.
Why wasn’t Andy Reid able to do anything with him?

I have different memories of Bray, his antics, and his attitude during his time.
I'm sure the fact that we have terrible QB play at present is causing some rosy retrospection.

He could fill up a highlight reel with pretty throws, there's no doubt about that. He also was a headcase, had a terrible attitude at times, and never quite brought it against good defenses like he did against bad ones. In the video in the OP, a lot of those throws were against garbage defenses.

Andy Reid kept Bray around for a while so he must have seen potential (which is a compliment in itself given Andy Reid is considered offensive guru). Of course it's not easy to get a starting job in NFL even if you do have arm talent ...

We probably threw it as well or better that year as we had since Clausen was throwing to Stallworth, Washington and Witten in the early 2000s
I totally agree with that.We were loaded on that side of the ball

That is definitely true as well and certainly held him back from achieving a lot more in his football career (given his arm talent) - both at UT and NFL. I always felt he could have been another Testeverde type of player in the NFL - he had that type of arm talent.

One the best Tennessee passes ever thrown - Bray to Dooley, 2012 Florida:

I'd give anything to have Dobbs under center for the VOLS this year.

I would take him over JG for sure, but not sure if he would be the best fit for our current offense. His strength was not accurately and quickly delivering the ball down the field (which is what Chaney's offenses are about), but rather improvising with his feat (running for his life when Butch's plays broke down - it's amazing how well he did that - probably bought Butch at least 2 extra years by being super effective escaping those broken plays ...).

Ha! That was the last Derek Dooley coached Tennessee game I attended. I remember Tennessee was ranked and actually favored by Vegas to win this game. Little did anyone know that by the end of the year Dooley was done and if it werent for beating UK the last game of the year, Dooley would have been the first to go 0-8 in the SEC.

Seems like he got alligator arms after his injury though.
He never was the same. His freshman year was as promising as I've ever seen. It still makes me vomit to think we had Bray, Neal, Cordarelle, Hunter and Roger's, plus Mychal Rivera, Tiny Richardson, James Stone, Fulton, Bullard, and Juwuan James on that offense. If Da'Rick hadn't gotten kicked off, whoa. And yet, we still sucked because defense is apparently important too in the SEC.

I stand by my claim that Tyler Bray is the most physically gifted thrower of the football that we’ve had around here in a very, very long time. Easily the best in this century.

Agreed. Just never had it between the ears. But he has been a backup in the NFL for a while.

That offense with our defense now? That could win the SEC. That was a nice offense.

That defense with Sunseri is the direct result of losing to UK the previous year. Wilcox got worried that Dooley was on the hot seat and took off which brought in Sunseri. Wilcox actually had the defense improving at the time and probably would have done good enough job the following year where we would have had a really great year overall. In my opintion looking back that Kentucky loss was what eventually got Dooley fired (for those reasons). Hopefully the same will not happen with Pruitt after his Kentucky disaster ...

I think if he had a more regimented coach like a Cut earlier in his career he would’ve had more success as a pro. But there’s nothing wrong holding a clipboard forever .

Some other things you see in those highlights.

1. several pass attempts into tight windows
2. several pass attempts to 2nd and 3rd options
3. speed at WR
