Reminiscing On Bray's Throws vs JG's Throws

I was thinking about It's okay and it made me think of when we had Bray. After watching his YouTube video, I really miss those down the field throws. WR's had decent separation, and many were wide open.

Just to be clear here..... we have WRs today that get separation and are wide open. But our QB either overthrows them or completely misses that they are wide open and throws an interception into coverage.

Bray and those receivers were far better than what we have available today. Bray clearly has always had NFL caliber arm talent (which is why he is still hanging around in NFL, even if only on practice squads).

Other than route running what do we have to compare receivers' ability? Seldom is a pass close enough to gage catching abilities. From what I have seen, this bunch can catch the ball if it is close enough to them and seem pretty good 50-50 balls.

We have good receivers today. Justin Hunter was great until his injury messed him up. Our problem is QBs, not receivers.

Ahh The Gunslinger. I still think he threw the prettiest deepball ever... almost like he reached out and gently placed the ball in the receivers' hands.

But did we really give up 48 points to Troy? How did I block that from my memory?

Our coaches (I assume Pruitt speaks for all of them) have complained that the receivers are not getting separation and/or not running the correct routes. This is one reason they are not putting all blame on JG - they are also complaining that RB's and TE's are not blocking well which makes oline look bad - I believe their analysis (although of course they should be blamed for not fixing that). Hunter certainly never had problems with creating separation (until he got injured) - but even after injury he was still pretty good.

Not to minimize JG’s issues, but I think it’s both.

...and while Palmer is good, there’s nothing on our roster that resembles Corderele Patterson and Justin Hunter.

The 2012 squad was potentially a 9-win team if it had just a so-so defense. As bad of a head coach as Dooley was, he actually had a great offensive squad that year. A talented but inconsistent QB, an O-line that could pass block, and multiple NFL receivers. The Sunseri hire totally did Dooley in.

Both things can be true. I'm sure our receivers dont always run the correct routes and our backs dont block well. HOWEVER, watching any game tape clearly reveals wide open receivers who are missed while the QB throws into coverage. This is a clear sign of one of two things.... the QB made a horrible decision or the QB was fully intending to throw to one receiver before the ball was even snapped and to hell if he was covered.

and receivers who had their man beat and were over or under thrown or thrown to the wrong shoulder.

This is a thread about Bray. How did he contribute to giving up those points? Or to anything else Sunseri defense did during Dooley's last year? If that defense was just average we would have probably played for NC that year - that's how great that offense was (what a waste - makes me sick all over again to think back about those wasted oportunities).

If we would have had just a defense in 2012 we cruise to an East title. Bray was a very good QB. Not real accurate but a great thrower. Hopefully we get something like Hunter in last years or this years class.

Yeah that makes me sick to my stomach to watch. Our qb play has dropped drastically. Our wide receivers were incredible then also.
