Remember when every Sat. when Tn kicked off you had a feeling that they could beat whoever they were playing. It didn’t matter who they were playing whether N.D. USC. Al Fl UCLA. OSU you always had that feeling. Now you hope and pray we can beat Ga St Vandy. Ky Ark. BYU or anybody. Times sure have changed.

Yes, those were great times. I remember getting up early and meeting at the old intramural fields to play pickup football games, then going home to clean up. We then headed to Mr Ghattis for a pizza buffet and watching the noon SEC game on the giant projector screen. After that, hitting campus to get ready to watch our Vols kick some other team in the teeth. I miss those days.

Now I wake up and expect to lose almost every game it’s a crappy feeling and I’ve lost alot of the excitement and interest I’ve had for college football because of UT’s struggles the last ten plus years on the gridiron. I used to start looking forward to college football in April and the orange and white games then the pre season magazine’s started rolling out in May I couldn’t wait till the end of summer and fall practice to start now I dread the start of the season almost cause you know what’s going to happen. Me and my dad used to go to 3 and 4 home games a year and the orange and white game every other year and drive 400 miles across the state it was a yearly tradition and we looked forward to it and picked the games to attend. Man I miss those days the mid to late 80’s and all the 90’s of Tennessee football those were the glory days and I’m afraid we will never see those days again with UT football it makes me sad. I grew up on Tennessee football it’s in my blood and I will never give up on it though but I’ve accepted the facts that we have basically turned into Vandy with a bigger stadium and more resources a perennial bottom feeder SEC team since 2010. We gotta get this thing turned around and soon but it sure won’t be with Phil in charge.

Can’t compete with instate talent, just not enough good players in Tennessee

Most players being recruited by UT we not even alive when UT was competitive
And the Beat goes on!

I was at the 2002 Vols Miami game in Knoxville which was during Miami's phenomenal run. Seems like they won 20 in a row or something crazy.

Watching those two teams warm up....it was shocking the difference in size, speed etc. Miami looked like and NFL team. I remember feeling completely hopeless as we kicked off.

Now, I feel that way 4-6 times per season.

They can't even keep the talent that is in state.

Clemson in particular has been cleaning the Vols clocks for years now in recruiting TN

Instate is irrelevant. We do not compete for those players. We missed out on the top 5 from instate this year. They know that they will not be developed for the next level in this program.

Those were the best days.

I remember watching all or parts of dozens of games each weekend, from Thursday night through late Saturday, because Tennessee was in the hunt for championships and how teams as far away as California could affect our chances. Like how UCLA and KSU (along with Florida State, of course) played key roles in the Vols' last national championship run.

It was hugely fun to be in the center of things back then.

And to think, we were still there as recently as 2007. We're only a bit over a dozen years removed from the halcyon days.

Really hoping we end up there again soon. That's the goal we can never lose sight of.

absolutely,
like many posters dad had me hooked on tennessee football between the ages of 6 and, 8, and thtat includes last days of bowden wyatt and then jim mcdonald.

,and almost felt betrayed when dickey left ,felt fulmer's ascension was correct, and had great hopes when kiffen arrived.

after that ....

We were pretty good in 2007. We haven't been nationally relevant since 2001

Ahhhhhh, Mr Gattis. I was a football manager and my years at UT were the same years Peyton was there. We knew we would win pretty much every game we played. Except for Florida that is!

The excitement of John Ward 's every call on the radio and the knowledge we could win EVERY game made it fun. Now it is just are we going to be able to not get embarrassed and listening to the droll of whatever announcer on TV telling us how bad we are.

That’s a good point. We were preseason #3 in 2005 and I recall then ABC’s John Saunders picking UT to win the National title during the network’s preseason college football show.

2001 may have been the beginning of the end of national relevance after the LSU loss, but most realized Fulmer had to go after the ‘05 season.

that game still riles me.
would hate to rank most pissed-me-off defeats, good grief, it'd be a long list
