Remember this statement from Pruitt

I totally agree, let's beat Vandy and Missouri then South Carolina then Florida THEN let's worry about Bama and Georgia. Florida and South Carolina are recruiting comparably with us this year, we are slightly ahead right now, but they are certainly not becoming more talented than us with this year's class.
How sad is it that we now talk like this?

We won't be able to get there as long as we play them every year. Guaranteed loss for the next 10 years

That doesnt have to be true if we have the right coach. You dont necesarily have to have better players to beat Alabama. You just have to outplay them or outcoach them. Both have been done before by other teams.

People kind of have it backwards. you dont have to recruit better than Bama before you beat them. The opposite it true, you wont outrecruit Bama UNTIL you beat them. We wont get the same level of recruiting until all the rats start to jump off the Bama ship, which happens when they begin losing and/or Saban retires/dies.

I agree it's sad, but a business that isn't honest with itself about its stock in trade will surely go broke, it's where we are right now. It doesn't mean we can't get out of it, we can, but it isn't going to be easy.
I remember as a kid forgetting South Carolina was even in the SEC....and Vandy games were easy to get into at Neyland because no one came to watch big brother beat up little nerd brother.

It's true, that any team can win a ballgame on Saturday. But talent and plenty of it will decide who the teams are going forward to the SECCG and the Playoff. Beating Bama or getting beat by Bama doesn't always decide either. Everyone gets one mulligan these days.

Kramer is gone. I'm not sure about phil's tape recorder. I would go after the talent concept if you plan on making a run through the SEC and a 12 game schedule and regain past vol glory.

There is a lot of VOL FANS won't to hear this but to compete with Bama and the Dawgs we need at least 2 more top recruiting classes thats just the truth like it or not this is going to take time all you got to do is just look at there class neither one is going to fall off any time soon we got 10 to 12 4 srars this class but Bama's average per player is a 4 star sit back and let that sink in i don't like it and JP IS recruiting very well but those 2 programs are at a different level right now we got to try to catch up we got to show the elite recruits that we are coming and the only way to do that is to win we need to win 8 games in 19 not 6 or 7, because if we win 5 to 6 the elite recruits will think same old Tennesseee, i know it will be hard to win 8 games in 19 but we got to take a step up not down, i think coach JP IS DOING A GREAT JOB but these top game changing recruits dont wont to hear win 2 or 3 years they wont to win now we got to take that next step and i think COACH JP and staff will in 19 GO VOLS

Yeah it seems like some Vol fans would rather have a coach who blows smoke rather than tell the truth.

Not sure what "truth" you're defending. I just don't think it's a good look when a first year coach throws his hands up in the air and basically says there's nothing he can do until he gets players that are as good or better than Bama's. And then we finish the season and blow a bowl bid by losing to a Vandy team with less overall talent and who just got beat last night by a Baylor team that finished in the bottom half of the Big 12 standings.

What should he say? He knows that he doesnt have a team capable of beating Bama. The players know it. All of us fans know it. Would you have rather him come out, lie to everyone, say we are good enough to beat Bama? If he woukd have done that, he would being bashed for speaking like a fool.

As far as losing to Vandy, why do you think he harped about getting better players in there who can do it right? Its because this team isnt good. You can try and spin it hiwever you want. But Vandy is a better team and has been for a few years now. Hell, even with Dobbs, Barnett and Malone we couldnt beat them. The players gave up on that game with Vandy. Everyone could see it. If you want to put the Vandy loss on Pruitt only, then fine. Give these players who all season long, failed to execute simple techniques that are taught in pee wee football.

He shouldn't say anything. He should coach. The players we had were better than Vandy's, but we just weren't ready to play. Maybe they didn't play with effort, but the coach is responsible. He's the one drawing the big salary. We should have never lost that game, much less by such a lopsided score. But Pruitt had already given the players a built-in excuse by telling the whole world they weren't good enough.

Maybe there was just no way we were ever going to win that game, no matter what Pruitt said or did. But it just looks bad. It looks like he gave himself and the team an excuse to lose.

I'm on record saying I think Pruitt can turn it around given time, but he does make some poor choices about the things he publicly says sometimes, like the comment to the effect that OC's aren't important. I attribute that to him learning the HC role. There's nothing wrong with being honest and realistic, those are desired traits, but you can't do that at the cost of demoralizing your current squad. Think less Denethor more Theoden King for any of you LOTR fans out there.

Me too. Then again, Vandy used to recruit in the 70s, not the 40s. South Carolina wasn't a top 25 recruiting program either. All that SEC success has lifted all the worst off boats. No easy games at the moment.

I remember a time when we didn't "slow" Bama down. We stopped them, time after time while we went down field. Oh please 8lb 6oz newborn baby Jesus, please let me live long enough to see that again.
I'd settle for seeing competitive loss's, at this point.

Need 3 elite classes to compete head to head, 2 isn’t going to cut it and by elite, you need to be top 3, top 5 minimum. Next year Ga will have the same talent as Bama. Took 3 years.

Watching this Florida game has me thinking, if Pruitt and Mullen switched roles, what would the results had been this season for Florida and Tennessee? Similar to what they actually were? Would UT be in a bowl game? Would Florida be in a New Years six?

Holy chit man, he's the head football coach, he can't NOT say anything. Like Marshawn lynch being interviewed after games "uh huh. I'm just here so I won't be fined."?? He can't do that! You're just proving that no matter what he says, some guy like you gonna nitpick it to death how he's wrong. Why is this whole thing so hard for you to understand.

If his choices were to say what he said or say nothing, he should have said nothing. Of course he could have said something more productive. But then I guess people might actually have some sort of expectations. And we certainly can't have that.

Pruitt will never have the 4-5* talent into the 2-deep at UT that he's had at other stops; he has to get more out of his 3*s to be successful at UT.
