Bowling Green threw for over 400 yards on us and scored 30 points. Guys looked totally clueless in the secondary. Everyone was ripping our pass defense. And you had Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma coming to town the following week. Everyone was predicting a shootout. Guess what happened? It was a low scoring defensive game (in regulation) and our pass defense looked pretty good most of the game.

I think you'll see the rush defense have a similar turnaround. Everyone thinks we are a bad rush defense because of the Georgia Tech game. I see a lot of Bowling Green 2015 in that game. We're not gonna give up anywhere close to that amount of yards or points at any other point this season.

Tennessee's defense will show up tomorrow and be DOMINANT.

Well, to be honest, to have a "dominate" pass rush you have to have the guys to do it. We do, but they are brand new and just pulling it together. Our D ends are pretty new. They are good though, really good, they just need to get their legs under them. That's what I expect to happen this game. They won't look like 5 year starters... but they are talented. They can do it. The inside pass rush has only played half their careers due to injury. They still need to gel. I expect all this to happen this game though. Tennessee does play the long game. They are planning on a season, not a game. That is true. Most of the masses are WWE type fans that just want to see blood though. Like the nascar fans who dropped off after the safety rules were instated. A lot of folks are just out for blood. It's what really matters.

Totally different defense and coaches...

Jancek > Shoop....to this point...

Shoop is way better than Jancek. And he'll prove it this year as the season progresses. Stop being prisoner of the moment or reflecting on last season injury plagued team.

Bob Shoop is an elite defensive coordinator.

Oh yeah..

The team played well. Butch Jones was just outcoached.

After we went up 17-0 he went conservative and that cost us. Also he couldn't adjust to the half-time adjustments Oklahoma made.

2015 is a season that was defined by Butch Jones ineptitude as a gameday coach.

Can someone remind me why Butch let him go? Seems like the defense played pretty good his final year.

He was pretty good, but there were problems behind the scenes nobody wants to talk about and it was time for a change. Tennessee needed new blood at that point. I questioned shoop's hire and liked jancek, but he had to go for "personal" reasons if nothing else. There was drama.

Shoop is better then the 7 people who like to bash him make you think. His defense is math, so a lot of folks don't see it. Martin seems to be the only real issue we are having right now. He is allowing plays, but hopefully he can get better as the season goes. They will do everything they can to make him better. No reason to crush the kid yet. He is here for a reason, he showed great potential.

Honestly. IIRC BM and that WR basically danced all over UT after our "star" went out.

So. Again. What defense is that your talking about? Game would of been over if there wasn't a PI in the end zone.

I remember having a 14-13 lead on Alabama late in the 4th quarter. Can you conceive of such a thing now?

Yes...if we were to catch them 8 weeks into the season with NO bye week, like last time...certainly.

Oh...and where was Jancek's Defense on Alabama's last waltz down the field?

it's a fair point. i was pretty hard on the DB's and pass defense in general after that first game. they did play much better after that game.

still don't understand why we have to set the bar so low from the get go though.:)

Yes.

That's exactly how the game in 2017 will play out. Alabama will sqeak out a win in Tuscaloosa only to fall to us in Atlanta for the national title game in 2018.

Statistically speaking, Jancek had us finishing better in total defense. I'm pretty sure we were even top 30. On the other hand, Shoop has the reputation of an "elite" defensive coordinator, yet there's only 6 schools that are worse at total defense than us.
