Remember Attrition?

lawsuit is hammering recruiting. nothing else is impacting it but that

Need to tell that to some of the people on here with their head in the sand, they are convinced it isn't making a difference even though it's pretty clear that it is.

Seems to me that adult players will laugh his slogans, catch phrases and motivating techniques out of the building.

Those things are for the benefit of the fans /media / marketing of the program to recruits. If he did ever take an NFL job those things would be unnecessary. The truth is, we don't know much about how he talks to players when the cameras aren't running.

...but I can't imagine that he will ever coach in the NFL, anyway. His offense just wouldn't be a fit.

Win the Natty. Butch goes to the NFL.

Manning the next UT coach. It's all good.

Go Vols!

Hubbs and Fort have said time and time again that it's not really a huge deal.

Don't they essentially say what the staff wants them to? "Yeah, there's no problem here! Everything is fine!" I'm not so sure.

Why? How does it matter and what does it affect? NCAA investigation I could understand, but this is a civil lawsuit that has no sanction authority. What am I missing?

I don't think anyone really knows that it's been a factor in keeping Tennessee from landing a commitment. I'm sure that Drae Bowles's allegation has been used against Butch and so some will insist that it's had an effect but the posters who do that will NEVER specifically name a recruit who has been influenced by it. So, it's just speculation.

Of course he wants to coach in the NFL. I imagine 99% of coaches do. Not sure why that comment has drawn so much has attention.

But I agree with the others that Butch and his slogans would be laughed out of the building when used on a bunch of millionaires. NFL would be a horrible fit for him IMO.

Because there is no proof that is the case (even though we got "it's no big secret"). I also don't believe that 99% of coaches prefer the NFL game. Some coaches know their strengths (such as recruiting) and weaknesses and in turn know where they are most likely to have longevity.

...and again, Butch's slogans and cliches are just for the benefit of fans and the media and for the purpose of marketing a program to recruits which was dead in the water when he took it over. It is unlikely such things would be used if he was in the NFL because he wouldn't need to. It is not a coach's job to market his program in the NFL like it is in college. We actually know very little about how he talks to the players and what he says to prepare them for games but it's probably not the same things he says at press conferences, in commercials and in those promotional videos that UT so slickly produces. We see only what UT wants us to see.

I don't see why this all seems to be so much of a surprise to many. I'm sure all or most coaches have NFL aspirations. Football coaches are competitors at heart: I'd expect most want to prove themselves at the highest level.

The question is when exactly Butch would try to make a jump? If he wins big this year (like playoff level big), it might be his best shot at making a jump. If that happens and he makes a jump in the next year or two, then it might become a lot more clear why Shoop was willing to pay his own buyout to come to Tennessee...

Also, Butch would have a pretty big buyout for whoever hires him away from Tennessee. On paper, if Butch makes the jump in the next year or two big success, then UT is in pretty amazing shape compared to when Butch was hired.

LWS thank you for the info you bring- is this lawsuit specifically making Butch think about the NFL more? Grind of recruiting getting to him and lawsuit on top of that? Or was that an aspiration he had previously? I guess what I am asking is he no longer happy here?

He has always had eye to the NFL as a long range future.

I don't believe the lawsuit itself has him thinking of doing anything sooner. What has him upset over the lawsuit was UT not settling last fall when they were presented a chance to settle. could have avoided all this negative publicity.

A very good season this fall MIGHT present him an opportunity to look to the future.

And you heard this from Jones? The negative publicity was going to come with the lawsuit - settled or not. Settling just makes the accused look like they're admitting guilt.

it could have been settled without publicity last fall as participants would have signed a non-disclosure.

Why would I post on a message board who I get information from? In over 20 years I've never done that and would never disclose sources or ask someone else to state their sources.

Lol. Snippy much? I'm just saying, if you didn't hear it from Jones, then maybe it's true, maybe it's not. I'm not asking you to name any source. I'm assuming you didn't hear it from Jones. So, i'm taking it with a grain of salt. That is all.

LWS thanks for the solid info. I think many of us are concerned because we take this to mean that maybe Butch isn't as happy here as he once was. The SEC grind, recruiting and now this damn lawsuit which is hurting recruiting I'm sure. What is your opinion on that?

I'm not new here and I've read enough of his stuff to respectfully disagree with you on the rumor mill comment. :hi:
