Just curious to hear from you guys....why is Scout considered such an inferior source for recruiting information versus Rivals, 247, or espn? Their website is easier to navigate and use than Rivals imo. However, I can't compare it to 247 because I refuse to pay for information that's made available eslewhere for free. Just wanted to get your opinions.......Thanks, VN brotherhood.

Past results give some indication of future results. They have just proven to be less accurate over time than Rivals. 247 iirc was started by former Rivals employees.

Scout hates us. They have us 8th and Rivals has us 1st. And 247 always rates Tennessee players higher, for the most part, than other sites. Probably bc they are based in Tennessee. I think they are, anyways.

I like 247 bc they offer a composite ranking. This and their crystal balls,,, wink wink

There haven't been many full-scale comparisons of the recruiting services, but the few I have seen have tagged Rivals as the most successful at predicting both college performance and ultimate NFL draft potential. All of the services miss alot, but Rivals averages out to be the best. 247 is really too new to assess properly, but they started off strong by poaching evaluators and writers from Rivals. I also think that many like the composite rating on 247. Scout has generally been second to Rivals in accuracy over the past, and has a long enough track record to be shown to be more accurate overall than ESPN, but most people on this board only tout it if it ranks UT commits & prospects higher than Rivals. ESPN has performed the worst of the services that have been in operation long enough to rank, but that may just represent a learning curve in designing a ranking formula and evaluating rising college athletes.

Honestly, I think that it's bad policy to think of any specific service as gospel. If a prospect is well-ranked across the board, then they are likely to succeed, but all of the services have had players bust that they thought to be sure-fire All Americans.

Here are a couple of links to comparisons using a couple of different methodologies:

Comparing services based on All-Conference & All-Americans (How are they at predicting future stars)

Comparing services based on performance of their top 100 players

A look at the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft and how those players were ranked by Rivals, Scout, & ESPN coming out of High School

And just to show why the ranking services and their opinion matters:

A comparison of performance of teams in 2012 (AP vs Rivals Recruiting Model)

The 2 things that stand out to me is that they are always late on information and they don't have enough people working for them to properly scout all of the high school blue chippers. I referred to them last week as the 'Jimmy Hyams' of the recruiting circuit.

Scout's rankings are garbage. They value quantity over quality, and they don't have the quality analyst staff. Their player rankings rarely line-up with the other services.

I didn't write them. I just found and read them online.

Somewhere in these last few dark years of UT football, I began looking at statistical analysis of records, coaches, stats, recruiting, etc to find some hope for the fall.

As of yet, it has been a largely fruitless pursuit (and it's what turned me against Dooley last season), but I'm interested to see what Butch does in the first year. I'm hopeful that I find something that happens in the fall that will signal positive days ahead.

Dont be hatin on the fade, dude.

You've been here a total of 10 days. You have to be here at least 6 months to learn the true meaning of Fade Hate.

Absolutely agree. In the beginning, I wanted to punch my computer screen when he posted, now I get a kick out of him. He's a great poster, and makes discussions meaningful.
