False premise. In order to get a top 5 class, you are going to have to lock down the state.

UGA doesn’t get a top 5 class if it doesn’t lock down it’s state.

Bama maybe an exception because they are in a class of their own. But still I’d say the rule applies.

Would they still have elite classes? Probably. But locking down your own state is usually the first step because theoretically your home state should be the least effort cause kids already have an inclination.

That said, should we be truly concerned at this point?

No. It’s Heupel’s first season and the NCAA is still hanging over our head.

No it’s not. UGA had the highest average star rating in the country for out of state recruits. They definitely had some highly rated in State players like Mondon and Mims but could have probably replaced them with out of state players of equal or higher rating if those kids had gone elsewhere.

If you have a top 5 class every year the in-state talent will be in that class.

This is a self fulfilling prophecy. If you are getting enough out of state talent to be in the top 5, you must be prestigious enough, therefore you must also be attractive to your instate players. Without both, in and out, we cannot be that high.

First we need to improve competitive status(currently trending up), and improved players from wherever. As we climb into the top 25 and our notoriety, in state players will stay home more and more.

With all the handwringing regarding Tennessee’s lack of in-state recruiting, it got me wondering why. I couldn’t care less where they are from, I just want a championship caliber team. Yes, it’s a great story if they are in-state kids, but ultimately I don’t care.
Gimme West, Williams, Nolan, M'ba and you can fill in the rest with transfers to fill in the gaps. I'll take that and call it a successful recruiting year.

Who exactly is hand-wringing? John Adams, perpetual UT hater? Adams can take a long walk off a short pier.

Recruiting is about relationships. Pruitt did a fantastic job of burning bridges with in-state coaches. Heupel cannot fix that in 1 day, or possibly even 1 recruiting cycle.

When we were at our peak in the Fulmer years we got good players from EVERYWHERE. Manning, Louisiana... Clausen, California... Ainge, Oregon. Jamal Lewis, Georgia... Travis Henry, Florida... Arian Foster, California. I could go on and on but you get the point.

Of course there were Tennessee players in there too, and in-state recruiting is getting better and better... but to get where we all want to be, we need to recruit nationally.

If Heupel is still losing out on the best Tennessee players in 3 years, then we have a problem. But not now... this thread is an early worst-of-the-offseason nominee, and it isn't even the offseason yet.

We could sign a top 5 class and not sign a single kid from TN.

I am going for option three. Recruit players from other planets if you must, just keep that fact under wraps. Those planets do not want us to know they are there.

And he could possibly be on the verge of winning 8 games in his first season let that sink in. A question was ask the other day on Talking Vawls what is the difference in Josh Heupel and to me the answer to that is he is winning where it counts fast than the other 3 put together. The other 3 it seemed they were all recruiting on the hope of what might be and Heupel is now recruiting on what is. His foundation for what he wants to do came together real quickly and now all he has to do is get the talent and depth to be successful.

I feel like the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. But in the end I don’t care as long as we win.
