While they are somewhat of an indicator...miss badly at times. For instance, remember Alabama's DeMeco Ryan was a 1 star out of HS and ended up as 06 NFL defensive rookie of the year...Stars mean nothing. Just ask 3 star QB's Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy. I won't even mention 5 star, #1 LB Chris Donald has yet to see the light of day.

Let's forget the stars and find players that fit the system

I'm willing to bet far more 4 and 5 star recruits succeed on the field as opposed to their 1 or 2 star counterparts.

I agree that the star ratings really do not mean a whole lot. Bottom line that most College know the types of players they want and who would play best in their particular system. The star rankings are a starting point for coaches to get an idea of how much potential a player may have.

I for sure agree with you, but good luck getting most posters to buy into this. Stars are for sites like Rivals and Scout to make money and draw more people in.

It is just a guess by these know it all talent evaluators and means nothing.

The worst part is kids let these eduacated guesses influence their decision at times and look past say a 2-3 star roster at Utah totally embarassing Alabama and its so called #1 recruiting class.

DeMeco Ryans was a 3 star...and generally the teams that are high in the recruiting rankings are the ones that end up being national title contenders...but you are correct in that these rankings are not the end-all and be-all of teambuilding

Kenny O'neal did nothing. Ben Martin has yet to do anything. Both 5*. Ratings out of high school don't always matter but it's usually a good indication. Two stars are usually going to do nothing or be average if you're lucky while four and five stars are usually going to good or average which is usually worst case scenario.

If you look at recruiting like playing the stock market...

4 and 5 star rated players have a much higher rate of positive return.

So, 50% of 4 star players might make the NFL, while only 20% of 3 star players make it.

Etc...

The ability of a coaching staff to do its own evaluation is CRITICAL in the sport right now.

Scout had him as a 1 star and Rivals a 3 star. Scout also has us 11th this year vs. 18th from Rivals. Note JS is 5 star by Scout and 4 star by Rivals

There is no doubt Kenny O'neal and some others were let downs... but they were 5 stars because of their talent in "high school". The stars don't mean they will be able to adjust to the college life and keep up their grades and etc...

you will see good things out of cd this year he just had a coach that didn't use his talent
where it was needed like kiffin is doing now. we have a coach that will teach this
kids not just recruit them and hope they work out

Its just like the ACT test.

Or the ASVAB test.

Look at it like this. The lower the score the harder you have work to get somewhere and just because you score high on the test does not mean you can Shoot, Move and Communicate at the same time.

Just watch our newest commitment's (LB Michael Taylor) highlite reel on Rivals......then realize he is "only" rated a 3-star. He sure as heck looks like a 4-5 star player to me in that film. I put WAY more stock in a prospects offer list. I trust college coaches evaluation over these recruiting site guys any day......they are just trying to get more subscribers with hype.

Stars = someone's subjective impression of a player's potential. Its the best thing we have for that right now, though it is inherently flawed as it compares individual things that cannot be quantified except in the most basic sense.
