So we talk about recruiting and obsess about rankings, but I've been curious lately as to the recent correlation of success in the recruiting rankings to success on the field. Now, I know this has been done before, but the following is focused on our neighborhood, namely the six traditional SEC powers, UT, UF, UGA, BAMA, LSU and AUB and the last 10 years.

The way to read the following is obviously the pertinent year first, then the recruiting rankings for the senior class, junior class, sophomore class and then freshman class, followed by the team's record and the final AP ranking. All of the recruiting rankings are from the composite. The "2020" numbers put the current rankings in the composite as of today as the "freshman class" ranking for next year, it won't be exact of course for where everyone finishes after signing day, but it'll be close.

A couple of things that jump at me, aren't revolutionary in any sense, first, recruiting rankings do NOT dictate destiny, but their cumulative effect generally results in better cumulative results on the field over time. The quarterback position has an outsized role in on the field success, and it is absolutely no mystery at all, how Bama sustained its dynasty. I'm interesting in hearing what anybody else more insightful than I am sees.

Good info. If recruiting rankings are a direct correlation to on the field success (as this information implies), The Vols are going to have to out-coach the best teams in the SEC. They just don’t have the same talent as their opponents on a rolling four year basis.

Interesting information. To me, it shows that obviously recruiting rankings as a whole, over a period of years matters, but if you've got incompetency in coaching, or a flawed strategy you get a bunch of UR's. Also, during Butch years, we had a high talent defection rate seemingly every year, so the rankings, just like Kiffin's first year, are really null and void.

To me, this is the biggest positive about Pruitt. He has had very limited defection of his recruited players, and has a solid philosophy of building the trenches first and foremost. Outside of the need for consistency at QB, the only thing we're missing is a real stud RB, and continued talent depth in 2's and 3's. I'm sure that's what we're selling the guy on campus this weekend. Grey is really encouraging, and small sample size...need to see those results against top level competition.

The one rise to the top that differs from Al Ga success in recruiting was Clemson. They never had top 8 type of classes until now. The difference was they landed a big time QB Watson who elevated their program and now they our a recruiting nightmare.

Here it is, graphed. This is just raw data; all the diamonds on the X-axis (bottom line) are average class rankings that resulted in being unranked in the final polls.

Some notes:
* The average class rank is just that - the average of a team's FR-SR class in a given year (top graph).
* The trend is weak. Even if you remove Unranked data, it doesn't get much better (bottom graph)
* If you plot individual classes, it's still weak. SR class has most influence, followed by JR, followed by SO (graphs not shown)
* My bet is that the strongest correlation is plotting AP Rank vs a 2 or 3 year lag on the recruiting rank (not done yet).

Recruiting rankings by the self-proclaimed experts are what they are. However, most important is recruiting to your needs. Three 5 star RBs will not help a team without an offensive line as much as one top RB with a strong supporting line.
