I haven't spent much time on the recruiting forum this fall. My understanding is that it was Dooley's worst effort (as ranked) since he arrived at Tennessee.

What are our current recruiting rankings on Rivals, South, 247 and ESPN? I understand all the arguments for and against those rankings by the way - its just the most simple metric to follows.

I'm sure this info is available, but I'm also sure many of you know it off the top of your heads.

I'd like to see how this trends between now and signing day as I think recruiting is the single biggest unknown with BJ. He seems like a pretty good coach, but we all know you can't win in this league without the horses.

I'll be fine with a top 20 class this year, but next year better be between 10-15 or higher.

I only keep up with Rivals, as they seem to be the most consistent. We are #24 right now on Rivals.

I saw one that had us at 28th. Butch has still got some time but he'll have to work his butt off. He's probably talking to some as we speak.

Same here, when I do follow recruiting I watch rivals. Last I knew ESPN doesn't include JUCO which is stupid.

Thanks! This will be a very objective way of measuring how the staff is performing.

Not really. It would be one thing if we hired a coach from another major University. Cincy went after some good players, but not exactly the same caliber of players we do.

It's going to take some time for our coaches to prove they know what they're doing, and to get their relationships built with recruits, especially in the state.

This year, they just won't have enough time. What we will get is their "board" combined with "our board" and what overlaps, we'll have a chance at. Letting Hinshaw go hurts a lot. Keeping Graham helps a lot. But if Jone's staff has a passion for UT like Jones' does, then they'll be okay.

But I don't think you can fairly measure this staff solely on if they get a highly rated class this year. That is not fair to them.

Give them a year to show what Butchball looks like. Give them a year to see how a Butch Jones program is run. Give them a year to talk to these recruits that Tennessee expects to get.

Then we'll talk.

Can't you measure them on whether they improve on the current rankings though? I'm not saying they have to be in the top 10, but can't we expect them to at least improve on where we are today? That seems to be to be a measurable goal. And I agree it's not the only thing to consider--improvements in hiring, along with the ultimate yard stick--wins vs. losses seem to all be reasonable metrics to me.

Not necessarily. Commits may look around. They, like many on here, may not be convinced until they see a product on the field. We may lose a few, and we may gain a few. The staff will do their best to keep them.

Honestly, if the current recruits stuck with the trainwreck that was Dooley, I don't see why they'd start looking now. They should realize that anything is a improvement.

But if we wind up with a poor recruiting class in the first year, I won't be calling for heads. I just think these guys are going to be different kinds of coaches. They are going to let their record speak for itself. But right now, nobody sees the record because everything before now doesn't matter. This is big boy ball. Let's see how they play, and then we'll make a decision.

That's how we all feel. What makes them any different?

Agreed. In all honesty, I don't have strong feelings about this staff one way or another at this point, with the exception of keeping Jay Graham and not making Jancek the DC--think we can do better there--but I'm hoping for a few things along the way that make me feel that we're on our way back to being winners.

I'll be happy with a unanimous top 20 class. I'll be thrilled with a top 15 or 16 class.

I agree but what they do with this first class is the first test and will be somewhat of a barometer.

One of the few things Dooley did a good job of was holding together the 2010 recruiting class. That class was in a lot better shape than the 2013 is currently. If Butch can take us from 25-30 to top 15-20 it will be very encouraging.

It will be. Just don't think we need to condemn them if it doesn't happen. I see it going up rather than down though.

I think people forget how many ee's we had in that class.

I got a feeling CBJ is about to start reeling them in! I can see us getting Derrick Green 5*, Marquez North one spot away from being a 5*, Asantii Woulard 4*, and Tyler Boyd 4* we will be getting up there quick
