Note where he mentions how much lying was out there. Looks like the selfish upbringing is really affecting recruiting and in full force....

I would sure like to know who he is talking about, but he said in the news conference that it is the type of thing you don't talk about until after you retire. I wonder if CPF will ever write a tell-all biography. I read "Bootlegger's Boy" about Barry Switzer in his days as a college player and coach and it was fasciniating.

Read it. Got to tell you, sounded like a lot of sour grapes excuse-making to me.

Switzer was a dynamic personality with a great story to tell. Fulmer is a boring dolt. Reading anything written by him would be an alternative to Sominex.

That's really taking responsibility. "I did a terrible job recruiting. However, it's because today's parents are raising a bunch of liars." Good to see Phil's essential nature never changes. This article joins the "I don't teach them to fumble" classic after the "95 Florida game on his greatest hits album.

Sounds like Phil is making his claim for a democratic congressional seat in Tennessee.

It is out of line and uncalled for but oh well.................

Not defending fulmer's response but - didn't it seem like a lot more of these kids "played" with the recruiters in years past???

Stick a microphone in front of a seventeen year old kid three days in a row. If you get one single response that resembles another I'll be surprised.
I don't think these kids are necessarily playing the recruiters and media.
It's an overwhelming process. Some handle it better than others.

Im in raleigh Nc, and the boards here at UNC and state do not think highly of Fulmer. What fulmer said is accusing now is what people have saying about fulmer for years. He has been accused of throwing people under the bus numerous times for his own gain and now he is blaming others for a lackluster recruiting. this is what people say on the boards here and i am only repeating their sentiment.

A 5-6 record will hurt recruiting anytime IMO.

Agree 100% - like i said - not defending Fulmer - it just seemed like the recruits toyed more with EVERYBODY this year - OWH - you make a good point too. I can't say that I wouldn't have sour grapes either though.

PhatPhil is full of excuses and lacks the guts to accept any blame, very much like his coaching style. He is soft and fluffy which has lead to off field hooligans and a nationwide recognition of a program that has little, if any, internal control! AD Hamilton needs to assert his authority and make big changes. This recruiting class is just another example of where the program is now and where it is going. Vandy beat UT, oh my god!

I guess I understand the sour grapes thing. But CPF has been through a five month meat grinder, and to me sounded as though he was feeling it.
I'm sure he looks forward to getting going on next years version of Vol football, and putting this past year to bed.
I know I do....

I don't know if anyone lied to the staff but I can understand that a kid might feel intimidated to say no to someone who keeps knocking on the door. Also, it really would not surprise me to learn that certain coaches at other schools enouraged kids to keep their mouths shut until the last minute but I don't think that is anything new. CPF has turn a lot of kids from other programs at the last minute in the past and I think he probably got a little payback this year. It happens.

I would also add that this class does not suck by any means. If we had not offered two kickers we would only have two 2-star commits (Raines and Dorian Davis). I would have liked to see some more offensive weapons in the class, but who wouldn't?

For the longest time I thought Fulmer was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I've gradually started to buy into some of the pesimism towards him now. I think it started for me in 2002 with how he handled 'the Future'. It was increased alot with all of the off the field issues and all the second and third chances he kepyt giving. And now this. It's definitely sour grapes on his part.

I don't think I've ever seen so many switches and fast ones pulled than this year. many of those "firm commitments" were the first to say "nevermind" signing day. I can understand second thoughts but there did seem to be quite a large number of sneaky actions pulled. Some even got creative. I'm not sure of the guy's name but he had a couple of hats on the table. He was rumored to be 'hard Bama' but no Bama hat was on the table. He then pulled out the Bear's hat and put it on. While this is light compared to some of the other fast ones I thought this one was creative to say the least.

I think this was a huge dose of reality for Fulmer. There are less and less team players out there every year. Our culture is all about the camera time. It's about booze, babes, and bling. We can either stick to getting the few kids left with heart or dip into the 'me' pool and form the player to UT standards. UT has a lot to compete with now since the trend is coastal and southern schools. We only fall into the southern category but so do quite a few other schools.

I think Fulmer is realizing this is truly a game. This isn't old fashioned recruiting anymore. For those who think Fulmer is outdated, this is another mark in that camp. It's survival of the fittest out there. Either Fulmer makes the most out of what we get, pulls in the ME crowd, or we sink faster than 5-6.

He was top in his day. He was the field marshall on the field and in the sport. But honestly, and this is not a slap at him, I seriously think the sport is evolving with the times and Fulmer is not changing. Whether we think his style and efforts are good or not, he is being left behind. If he wants to survive he will have to evolve as well. I think that generally explains a slide recently. He's kept up with the learning curve with his head above water but now he's tiring out and sinking. Honestly, for his sake and UT's sake, I hope he comes back. But if he keeps sinking something else will have to be done.

You bring up a lot of good points - one thing that Ilook at from our past is that UT was one of the first to truly capitalize on recruiting. Everyone knows how we play - what we do in certain situations, we used to bea ble to line up and say "my athletes are better than yours, try and stop us". Now there is so much parity out there that the evolution in NCAA FB is upon and it is starting to show that UT is behind the eight ball.

you know i read the articles and saw the quotes, and heard what CPF said about the prospects lying etc...and at first glance, yep, sounds like cry baby whiner sore loser crap. and there's a little of that in there no doubt.

But you know what else was in that? Anger. I think he's pissed off. I think he can't wait until spring. I think he can't wait to start working with these guys again. I think he wants to come out and prove that he can still coach and win.

He honestly sounded pissed off. and that's a good thing. I hope he is pissed off. He should be. And i hope it rubs off on the players.....

it's us against the world mentality. I like it. Now he could have done with out some of those comments about recruits lying etc....that makes him look bad, and i'd bet he regrets making those comments.

oh well, we'll all see....

I think a good way to look at it is to consider how often we've all beeen angry at something involving UT football. How often have have any of us said something completely awful after a loss or some embarassing off the field situation. I know I typed some stuff on here earlier aginst Fulmer that I'm thinking twice about now. I think Fulmer wants to win more than anyone on here and the frustrations of an all around bad season has just gotten to him. Could you imagine taking all the heat he has lately and then having it topped off with some prima donna recruit lying to your face? I truly hope we have an excellent season next year. Not only for myself and the rest of us fans but for Fulmer.

i think your post has a lot of truth to it, he has to know people are saying he's outdated and can't get it done any more and now the major thing EVERYBODY thought he could (recruiting) do he didnt do as well as he was hoping. all of this heat may be the thing he needed to get pissed off at the players like you said and maybe even demand perfection instead of telling the players how they can do better next time.

there should be an early signing period so these kids dont play games and effect recruiting so heavily.
