Manziel takes it to a whole different level. Sure our players can be cocky on the field, in that they get frustrated when they don't execute. But look how they celebrate a TD. DeAnthony Thomas finishes a mind blowing TD run and he quickly hands the ball to the referee, hugs his linemen, and jogs to the sideline. That's it. Nothing more. No jawing. No "money making" moves. No dance moves. And as I said, the players are upstanding citizens off the field and in the classroom. Johnny Manziel is an ass clown everywhere.

I have made up my mind, mate. What I like about my players and what attitudes I think they should have are NOTHING like Manziel and his bafoonery. I hope you now see the difference.

Mariota composes himself well. He actually seems to keep to himself when on the sidelines.. i'm not referring to him. I'm not sure who the exact players are on your team. You had a penalty for throat slashing and another player following an opponent while taunting when a ref is next to him telling him to stop. And then he got upset because the flag was thrown. I recall a play where Oregon had to punt and laid 2 late hits yet only 1 was called. They get frustrated and cause penalties because of it.

The player who clapped was DeAnthony Thomas. And it was a BS call because he was clapping to himself walking back to the huddle. He did nothing to taunt or provoke the Virginia player. And even if you want to say he went overboard, it's his first penalty taunting in 3 years as a starter. I know this because I watch every game, every year. And it's the first taunting penalty called on Oregon I can remember. The problem with your argument is that you started it with "I watched the UVA-Oregon game..." Great. You watched one game. In the pursuit of evidence and trends, that's what people in research fields would call "Not enough evidence to make a sweeping judgement." I'm not trying to be a dick. I'm just calling you out for a misguided and unfounded assumption.

Oregon runs more plays and faces more plays than almost any team in the country. That means they're going to earn more penalties by a law of averages. And every football game you watch these days - pro or college - you're likely to see a late hit called that isn't even egregious. It's simply how they call the game at present in an attempt to protect players.

youre right, ive only watched 1 Oregon game ever. Oregon is under new leadership and that game just happened to be 50% of their season under this new leadership. your also right that Oregon players are saints and have never done anything wrong, and cant be beat on the field. getting several penalties in a game also doesnt affect anything. also if its the first taunting penalty you can remember being called on Oregon, you must not have been watching earlier in the game when they had another one.

Haha. Whatever man. New head coach - sure. But same position coaches, same players, same practice routine, same philosophy, same attitude, same system, and same results. Oregon is penalized a lot. But it has little to no effect on the game if you never turn the ball over and average 6+ yards a carry. He last game penalties truly effected the outcome of an Oregon was against LSU 2 years ago. And that's because we had 4 turnovers. One was picked up for a score, and the others occurred in our half the field - the worst kinds.

Our players aren't saints. They're aggressive. And that's the way it should be. I don't want saints. Sure, I don't want a Florida Gator state prison for a team, but I want a team that plays with a controlled recklessness on the field.

And yeah we can be beat on the field. You just better be sure that your team is elite and stacked with elite talent to beat us. We've only lost 4 games in 3 years. And the teams that beat us? They were really good. And penalties didn't decide those games, with the exception of maybe that LSU game when we couldn't keep the ball to ourselves. Can Tennessee win this game? I think very easily so. But if your team goes into Autzen thinking they can count on a late hit and a taunting penalty to win, they've already lost. If Tennessee wins, it'll be because they're a well coached team with talent, and forced more turnovers than they give away.

And if you're sure we had two taunting penalties, then fine. But I'd prefer solid proof before I accept it because while I remember the Thomas one, I can't recall the other. The point is, when the penalty happened, I DIDN'T say to my Oregon friends, "Dammit - always with the effing taunting penalties." The reason we didn't think that is because they're rarely ever called on us. The team doesn't taunt.

And, I watched the WKU game. Tennessee was a bad 4-10 on 3rd down, gave up 393 yards, over 6 yards a pass, and five yards a carry. Guess how many assumptions and conclusions I made from that game? Zero. Why? Because even though it was a less than perfect game, you probably played down to your opponent and I know you'll be bringing your A game on Saturday. And why else? Because it was one game, and I simply don't know enough. And I don't feel comfident announcing to my Oregon friends that Tennessee is going to suck again on 3rd down and give up yards in chunks just because it happened last week.

Opinions are fine, except that they attach X university to Y misconception. It's football; it has stats and facts. Opinions mean little to me for sport. Opinions are only relevant in sport if facts cannot definitively prove a point.

Look, I'm not trying to get heated. I enjoy reading your views on the subject. I only wish to elucidate the reality of Oregon's attitude and penalty history, however much of a homer it makes me seem. Oregon or not, I'm pretty good at calling it like it is.

And I highly recommend you watch more Oregon games. Win or lose, they're really fun to watch. There's a reason they're called "Your favorite team's favorite team." Anyway, fun talking to you, as it has been with all you Volunteer fans. Gotta love and respect the passion you all have for your team. As a Tennessee enthusiast myself, I will be watching every minute of your games against Florida and Georgia, hoping you win both. Can't stand those teams. Especially Georgia for backing out of a home-and-home with us. Would have loved to see that game.

There are (at least) two glaring things missing from this analysis. (1) We are playing on the road, not at home. (2) Mariota is a Heisman candidate. Oregon's QB 2010 wasn't nearly the player Mariota is.

This is a much tougher game than 2010.

It takes quite a bit of physicality to beat Oregon. We got the oline that it takes to beat them, but we'll need more than that..

I hope we can run into them again in a couple years in a bowl game or a playoff game

First off, POA is one of the best posters on this board. Second, I am already sick of a bunch of arrogant ducks quacking about how great they are. Go to your own boards. This is VOLNATION, not ducknation. Oregon posters started out respectful and have become increasingly arrogant and overbearing.

I guess my analysis is more on the Ron Swanson side of the positivity chart. I agree that an away game will be an added challenge, but I disagree that Mariota is THAT much better a QB than Darron Thomas.

Give Mariota 266 more rushing yards and even their stats are comparable.

  • Mariota threw for 2677 yards (68.5% completion ratio) with 32 TDs and 6 interceptions.
  • Thomas threw for 2881 yards (61.5% completion ratio) with 30 TDs and 9 interceptions.

DuckIt has offered good examples of how Oregon is better as a team, and that may be the case. I am not saying this is a win for the Vols, but I think we've improved in a lot of areas that were huge holes for us in 2010.

I don't remember ever calling him one of the worst posters on the board, but thank you for letting me know. Though I'm not sure why you're coming to his defense, since I did nothing to belittle him except correct him about one misguided opinion (it's the process of discourse and learning. If I say the capital of France is Istanbul, I would expect someone to say that I'm wrong and that it's actually Paris. In which case I would say, "Huh. Never knew.")

Yes. This is Volnation. I'm quite capable of reading. And the colors give it anyway, even if I couldn't read. And, I'll have to check the schedule to confirm, but I think Oregon is playing Tennessee. Which means that an Oregon fan might have a lot of curiosity about this year's Tennessee team. And how am I arrogant? Because I tried to correct one misconception stated by a poster here? Or is it because I thanked him for the dialogue? Or is it because I talked about how much I'm actually a fan of Tennessee? Or maybe if you read my other posts, it's because I talked about how Peyton Manning was the reason I started following college football? Or is it because I have previously extolled the virtues of this team and how Butch Jones is taking them to good places? Or maybe you saw my arrogance when I talked about how excited I am that a team like Tennessee is visiting our stadium?

Trust me, I would not spend 10 seconds trying to FIND a duck board, much less arguing about how awesome my team is compared to everybody else. Typical super long winded reponse from a quacker. I realize you think the swimming with the fishes comment is funny, but I will tell you here what I would say to your face. Don`t make threats you aren`t willing to follow through on. I don`t play those games.

Oregon is a better team than 2010. But so is Tennessee. I think that's clear. How much better is each team and at which positions? We'll see on Saturday. It'll be interesting.

As far as Mariota goes, he is a far better QB and pure football player than Thomas. It's even more obvious with the eye test and ignoring the stats. Mariota has a better arm, better accuracy, a bigger range of throws, is more physically imposing, and is WAY faster.

Thomas played much deeper into the 3rd and 4th quarter. Mariota compiled those stats despite being pulled after the first half for at least a third of the season. Maybe more.

I think Tennessee is much improved, and will make this game much more interesting. Or at least I'm hoping. I think the biggest improvement for Tennessee isn't even the pure talent. It's the coaching. The 2010 Oregon team wasn't supremely talented (compared to our current team and other elite teams). They were coached up really well, by Skip the Chip - the legend. I think Butch Jones is the type of guy to coach up. So not only are your players improved, especially in regards to experience; but I think this team is better coached. As you can tell from our 2010 team, being coached up and coached well is huge. This game will be good. Oregon might pull it out in the end due to depth. But this is going to be a hard fought game. That's for sure.

What threats? Follow through on what? I don't think fishes phrase is funny. I think it's notriously stupid, which is why I used it. Because I was trying to add idiocy to my post. We're football fans. This is the internet. I thought I was amicably talking about football with Tennessee people. You should unbundle those panties of yours and relax. Seriously. That was probably the most acrimonious response to an innocuous post ever.

Whatever. Don't find a Duck site. I don't care. I wouldn't even want an Oregon fan with that kind of attitude on our Duck site. Now pardon me while I continue having fun chatting with the rest of these friendly Vols.
