The mods let us keep the "football talk thread". Perhaps they would indulge us recruiting junkies to be able to discuss the game tomorrow in this thread (instead of filling up the football talk thread or venturing into the football forum) :hi:

I would like to begin the thread with my final predictions for the game tomorrow. In the football talk thread a week or so ago, I detailed WHY I thought we would win. This is how I think it plays out.

1. Mississippi State rushes for over 200 yards: The defense improves, but still allows some big plays, and Mississippi State relies on their bread and butter.

2. Mississippi State passes for under 225: The secondary plays a solid game, picking off two passes.

3. Tennessee wins the turnover battle, 3-1:

4. Bray passes for 300 yards: In spite of the hype for Jonathan Banks, Bray finds plenty of soft spots in the defense and mixes the long ball with mid-range.

5. Tennessee rushes for 4 YPC: It's nothing spectacular, but it is enough to keep the defense honest and Chaney provides a good mix. It also helps Tennessee to sustain long drives and keep the cowbells silent.

Final Score: Tennessee 41 Mississippi State 24

Guess that didn't work?

I liked the idea.

Huge game tonight!! Really want to believe that if we can win tonight, then we go on to beat Bama and/or SC the next 2 weeks. Tonight we will see if this team turned the corner againt Georgia. Although we lost, I believe this team grew up a lot...we will see in a little over 12 hours. GO VOLS!!

Freak coming through! Thanks! There really is a difference in discussing football here and discussing football in the FF. It's kind of nice to have our own little world over here.

And that's why I just bought a case of Natty Ice. People rag on the Natty, but it's cheap, and cheap keeps the beer coming. Go Vols! Beat those cowbell jigglers!

Chaney needs to come out tonight & continue to run the ball the way he did against UGA, we had their defense gassed at the end of that game.

Pig Howard should make an impact tonight, he's had 2 weeks to soak in more of the offense.

Precursor: State is going to try to "Alabama you to death." Literally will employ practically the exact same gameplan against the Vols. Needless to say, we don't have the athletes Alabama does, so that calls to question whether we can pull it off...

1. Probably about right... We are going to try to shorten the game and keep Bray on the sidelines. Another thing that isn't being talked about is that our best run blocking OL, rsSR RG Tobias Smith, is expected to play and play alot in this game. Has been held out of every game other than Auburn as a precaution(very injury proned player coming off knee surgery). The other player we've been playing is rsFR Justin Malone, so needless to say, there is a BIG difference between when these two guys are in the game.

2. Also probably about right... But don't underestimate our passing game this season based on past seasons. Tyler Russell is surgical. Best passing qb we've ever had, and it is NOT close. Will set our single season and career yards records this season barring injury(not saying much with the lack of QBs we've had in the modern era). Thusfar, he has made good decisions, but he does try to force some throws, and holds onto the ball too long(and gets hit for it). He's thrown 10tds to 1int(in garbage time against South Alabama).

3. Whoever wins the turnover battle will win this game... with a +-2 margin, I'd say it is almost automatic...

4. Wouldn't be surprised at all. Common misconception about this State defense and particularly secondary... It doesn't man you up at the line and try to completely shut down the pass. Designed as a "bend don't break" D and gives up yards. It's the points that are difficult to come by. Play alot of soft coverages to prevent being beat deep. We will give you the 5-10 yard pass all day long. Will Bray have the patience to take what is given or will he go for the homerun ball? If he tries to throw deep much, it is going to be a long day for you guys. Just the nature of the coverage. In 18 games under the current DC, State has given up 4 total pass plays that went for over 40 yards...and that was without NEARLY as good of a coverage cb playing across from Banks last season.

5. Seems pretty logical.

6. The game will depend on State's ability to get pressure on Bray... particularly the matchup of Tiny Richardson and Denico Autry. If we can get pressure, it will be a long day for you guys. If we can't, it will be a long day for us in the same vein as the game where Arkansas destroyed us last year. Can't wait for this game!

I'm really excited to see how McNeil performs in his first start. Kid has a bright future, and it starts tonight!
