Would UCLA give him the type of control he wants? If they will and we won't that's ridiculous.

It seems a bit of a stretch that some sort of supposed "control" would be the only deciding factor.

If Rice's info is correct, the UCLA deal has been cooking up for a while now. Its a west coast job, similar to his last situation. Its in LA, but that's far from a meat grinder of a market media-wise and pressure-wise and he'd pretty much be left alone.

Maybe its just a better fit.

Now, that's not to say Currie can't make a pitch and shift his mind, but that isn't something I'm pinning every hope I have on.

Gruden hasn't coached in a hundred years and the strength of his name would die shortly after he failed to meet the unachievably high expectations everyone would place on him.

This is an exaggeration, he is not even 100 years old!

I don't see Gruden failing at the college level unless he just neglected parts of the job, which is a realistic possibility. He would rarely/never be outcoached and would also likely have an extremely strong staff. And we'd have our pick of every QB in the nation every year.

Scott Frost and DJ Durkin would be down the list on our search IMO, a lot of unknowns there for us to hand them the keys to our program.

What are the unknowns with DJ Durkin?

Successful SEC experience
Successful coordinator experience
Successful head coach experience
Recruiter of the year 2012

....?

Oh, make no mistake, I'm on the Chip Kelly train. To me, the list should look like:

Chip Kelly
Gary Patterson
DJ Durkin

It should be CK/GP or bust, but if they refuse, DJ Durkin is the best of what's left.

I’d rather have Brohm than Durkin. Rather have Frost than him too I think

Durkin brings the SEC experience role and legitimacy. Brohm brings the better HC/OC role.

It's a toss-up. To me, the recruiting and SEC experience is what puts Durkin at the top of the "Other's" list. All things being equal, I want a defensive minded coach too.

Currie will get the best available in the power group's view. None of us have any input. The allure of LA is big for some, not for others. If that's what Chip or any other coach wants, good luck. We want a coach that views this as a destination job. Butch viewed it that way, he just wasn't competent enough to get it done. We need both.

The group better realize this is it. If they botch it again the program will be decades recovering. Interest in the program has waned for over a decade. With each failure, the apathy and disbelief in coach speak increases. The field of competent prospective coaches narrows as the program is viewed as a less attractive opportunity.

The new coach may have a serious roster issue as it is. This one was built for Butch's system and is not getting it done. Will see if it is more about his system or his players or both with the next guy.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Jim Bob Cooter. He has turned into a really good OC in the NFL, and is a homegrown guy who understands the culture at Tennessee.

So you don't understand it but expect us to give it to him. Makes perfect sense

If full control means he brings his own NCAA compliance guy with him then under no circumstances should we entertain this guy.

I think as far as staff and players, absolutely full control, with possibly veto power over a player who has a history of problems. For compliance, no way. That is asking for it, for sure.

I think our head coach needs to be given more control. Especially with hires/fires.

Gotta decide if we want to hire a football coach or a figurehead. Time to eat at the adult's table. 10 years of this crap is long enough.

Never coached at the college level, this makes him an unknown. We really don't need to hire an unknown.
