Our arch-nemesis rolls into town this Saturday following our crapping the bed last Saturday against Arky. Florida seems to have righted the ship a little, as they have won the last couple games and scored a decent amount of points while doing it. The big question is how will the Vols respond to that abysmal showing last week.
Keys to the game:
1. Trench play: this game will be decided on who wins in the trenches. We got our butts whipped a lot in the trenches last Saturday night, but especially on offense. It’s time to man up and play with anger, grit, and harmful intentions. If we create some running room for Sampson, protect Nico, and do what we do with our defensive line, we should be in position to win.
2. Take the handcuffs off Nico: it’s time to take the training wheels off, and let Nico run the offense. That includes keeping the ball on the zone read. Just let him use his natural instincts and play football.
3. Run to the edge: if Florida comes out with a 3 man front, can we please run to the edge? We are all tired of seeing the same rushing attack against this enigma defense. Run some sweeps, speed option, zone read. Then you can probably hit some runs between the tackles.
4. Aggressive defensive game plan: please let’s play aggressive defense with press man and do not let them hit us with short passes and screens like they did to us last year. Make Mertz beat you throwing intermediate and deep routes.
Final prediction:
I focused mainly on what we do, because let’s be honest…if we do what we should and can do on both sides of the ball, then this should be a double digit win. We are the more talented team, we are better on offense, and we are better on defense. We should win this game and do it convincingly! However, it’s Florida. This game never seems to be easy for us no matter how much better it seems we are. That won’t be the case this year. The Vols will come in very mad and out to prove last week is not who they are. I expect a different team. It’s a night game in Neyland with checkering Neyland in effect. We come out fired up, start fast, and never look back.
