I understand that every place has their ugly areas but to say the state of Mississippi as a whole is ugly is a lie. People keep referring to the delta area. Yes the delta is part of Mississippi. No the entire state of Mississippi is not like the delta. Also racism exists outside of Mississippi. I spent a good portion of my life in Lenior City, TN. I have seen more racism in that town then in Hattiesburg, MS.

I never said the whole state of Mississippi is ugly. Someone mentioned the Delta and I gave my opinion on what I saw there. My sister lives in Ridgeland, right outside of Jackson, and I have been to Hattiesburg too. Those places aren't that bad. The delta is another story.

Fumb and uckin dugly...

My granddaddy once told me that opinions are like ***holes, everyone has one and they all stink. Obviously these polls are based on public perception. You could probably ask Northerners what they think about Southerners and they would say we are all dumb and uneducated rednecks.

I'm not from Gallatin, fyi. This is just a temporary stop. Believe me, it's worse in Greenwood, MS. Nothing to do and still racist as ever. Whites live on.one side of the tracks and blacks on.the other. Mississippi Burning movie, the true story, was about Philadelphia, Mississippi. Right down the road, about 30 minutes away. I used to play holdem with a lot of these guys. They told black jokes and I would tell them I didn't want to hear that s@##. Gallatin may not be the best place, but it's a whole lot better than The Delta.

Philly's like a 100 miles from Greenwood

As far as racism goes or at least the talk associated with racism, I've said the same thing. I hear more racist jokes, derogatory names and claims in KY than the Deep South. Those further removed from minorities or other cultures tend to have the biggest biases and bigotry because they don't get to know the people. Today it's Mexicans around the country that are the "problem" and many have brought an undeserving stereotype upon the good ones. However, my town was 40%+ Mexican and in our high school they were the majority. Few if anyone around had problems with Mexicans and we counted many of them amongst our friends. So the bigotry I hear towards Mexicans, in parts of the world where the only 5 Mexicans are the ones who own the local restaurant, is mind boggling to me because these folks know so little and have rarely been around them.

Man, people really nit pick on this board. Lol. I saw 1st hand how blacks are still treated there. I had one customer that said he worked for this white foreman that would say, "boy do this, boy do that." One night, I saw a wreck, where this girl flipped her car over and over. When the car came to a complete stop it was upside down. I tried to wave down a trucker, that happened to be a black man, he drove on past out of fear of what might happen to him. i know this, because he did finally stop about 300 yrds down the road and came back, because.he saw the headlights of the overturned vehicle. He told me he was sorry he didn't stop right away, but hw has to be careful with the way things are down there. Say what you want, and racism might exist everywhere, both black and white, but when I lived there I felt like I had gone back in time.

I admitted it was like stepping back in time. I've not lived there but spend a decent amount of time in the area for work and the relations are pretty good from where they were 50 years ago (one would hope). Most racist guy I ever met was a kid from Brentwood who was my roommate at FCA Camp in Asheville one summer. He asked me what I thought about having all the blacks around and if I was worried that they may jump us or try to rob us? I looked at him completely dumbfounded when he told me he didn't have "any of them" in his school or where he comes from. I was a 14 year old kid from SoFL who knew nothing about Brentwood at the time but couldn't imagine anyone thinking that a black would rob you, just because they're black.

By the end of the week some of my beef jerky went missing, and it wasn't the blacks who stole from me...
