We should have been up by more than 4 at half.

That's called FL luck not UT luck (except bad luck)

You mention FL DB drops. Did you miss the fumble FL gift-wrapped for us on their 2 yard line that we incomprehensibly couldn't recover?

I'm looking forward to seeing this team take care of things against Akron and hopefully getting some younger guys some experience as well as resting those who need it.

We will be 3-1 headed to Georgia and no one outside our team and the fanbase will really give us a shot. I believe it will be a great opportunity to make some things happen and compete all the way to the end in the ballgame. It won't be easy but I think we have a real chance.

Hey guys, figured I'd wait a few days and let emotions die down a little bit before posting my thoughts on the game. Take these for what its worth:

1. I went to Neyland. WOW! Beautiful stadium, beautiful setting, great atmosphere. Probably my favorite SEC stadium (outside the swamp of course). Can't imagine a much better place to watch a big game...you could definitely feel the excitement.

2. I think UF was lucky to only be down 4 at the half. There were plays on both sides that could've made the difference more/less (i.e. UF fumble recovery, UF failing to score from the 1 yd line, etc). However, from my perspective it felt like UF barely got anything going at all in the first half. UT's offense was moving the ball fairly well, although UF's DB's did a good job of at least hanging with your WR's. In the first half UT's d stuffed the running game for the most part....but as mentioned ad nauseaum had some difficulties with containment. From a gator perspective it felt like we were just hanging on in the 1st half.

3. Beginning with the opening drive in the 2nd half the UF offense seemed to be much more in sync. If Burton doesn't lose his balance down the sideline, UF probably scores a TD rather than a fg on the first drive. I thought UT responded nicely by scoring, and AJ Johnson in the wildcat is a nice touch. To me the turning point in the game was intentional grounding on Bray and UT's subsequent inability to do anything despite great field position after the fake punt failure by UF. Once UT punted, and Burton scored from 80 yds it felt like most of the UT fans around me felt impending doom on the horizon. Obviously, UT then abandoned the run game...and UF's secondary/pass rush (with help from a couple of drops) tightened up. However, I've heard a lot about Hunter's drop...but to me Patterson's drop on the fly pattern down the sideline when you guys were only down 7 was even bigger. He had a shot to score on that play.

4. All in all, very good game.......and enjoyable time in Knoxville. Good luck with the rest of your season.

Good post. Thank you for your perspective. Sounds pretty spot on. Both drops were huge ones.

The part about the Gators "holding on" is key. We had a chance to win. That is a step up. Not as bad as it was. Got a good chance to turn it around against UGA. Don't give up yet negaVols.

My fear with the UGA game is based on watching how they beat Mizzou. We may have more starting talent but similar depth issues as Mizzou. The second half by UGA was lights out specifically on D and we are no where near ready for that yet.
If TB plays like he is capable and Hunter catches as well as he broke up INT's last week then fine but we are and will be a very hot or cold team based mainly on our 3 legged stool offense. Just like last year and with FL if one leg isn't working the whole thing crashes over.

IMO the reason Chaney is the issue is because he doesn't try to build in a 4th leg either through TE play, RB play, etc. What exacerbates the issue and has is because we have such good weapons in those 3 spots that we've been caught repeatedly assuming they will not fail. Failure to have already corrected that issue despite repeated warnings is why DD IMO is failing all of us. They keep assuming their pocket aces is enough to win out without even seeing the flop.

From re-watching the game yesterday another series of plays that ticked me off was late in the 2nd quarter, we were up 14-7 had it 2nd & 1 from midfield (Kerbyson had to come in at RT b/c James' helmet came off) all the momentum was on our side & KK false starts to make it 2nd & 6, instead of Chaney running it he goes pass, pass & Florida gets the ball back drives down before halftime & puts 3 up.

If we get another 1st down there Florida likely doesn't touch the ball again before halftime.

Should have ran it at 2nd and 6, FL had their 2nd string DL in there!

I appreciate your perspective. Good post. Hate that things didn't turn out differently, but congratulations on the win. UF took it to us in the second half.

In the first half TB was hitting MR for several key plays to keep the drives moving. That didn't happen in the second half. We were also making some progress running but like had been stated we went away from it. THere needs to be some balance for any good defense to respect the threats of UT's offense.

Does anyone else think he calls a game like he is playing it on Xbox or Playstation? We get scored on and he comes out throwing it deep and not running, using screen plays, etc. to stop the pass rush. He tries to score in the quickest way possible.

Part of the reason our defense gets tired is due to us either scoring quick or having a 3 and out... Sometimes the best defense is a clock controlled run game...

I agree when we really do well more than 3 key players are producing. When we fail is when is we are reduced (in many cases by our own doing) down to just 2 or less weapons. At times TB failed us, at times JH and or CP failed us and in the second half that's really all you saw.

For you football people, what's up with our OL and run blocking? Seems like we do really well pass blocking, but pretty bad run blocking. Is our OL not built to run block, or is it a technique thing? Seems like we are big and athletic enough to open more holes, but it doesn't happen often.

Jmo but I thought our run blocking has been fine..we has around 80 yards on about 20 caries before Chaney completely abandoned the run game. There were some big holes and if Neal would have broken an arm tackle or two, would have had a few huge runs.

The OL has been run blocking much better this year. When run plays are actually called our backs are averaging 4-5 yards a carry. If we had an elite RB out there folks would be saying, "wow our OL sure does open up big holes for the RB's!". JMO

We need Green or Henry to sign with UT.

I don't know, we had a couple double digit runs and then a lot of 2 yard runs. We do break out some big ones, so our average is ok, but we are not getting very many 5 yd runs at all. We averaged less than 3 yds if you take out the two big ones.
