If I remember correctly the ability to move from sideline to sideline quickly was one of DB's biggest pro's when in HS. I wonder if Shoop will try him out at the star position this spring?

There's a lot that goes into schemes and after the fact that Butch has been a 43 guy at every stop, and Shoop is a 43 guy (my preferred Defense) there's some other details that I'm not 100% on w Shoop.

He likes to run more zone in the secondary with a lot of zone blitzing. According to Doug Matthews that is.

I like man coverage at all costs..

Matthews said he would ask him about this(zone/man) Sunday if he's on his show. Said he wasn't bringing anyone from former staff and is joining a defensive staff that primarily ran Man and has been together for years. Wonder how that will play out.

I personally cannot stand zone defense. But in some cases may be necessary if your personnel is suited for that.

He ran man at times at Vandy. Also when blitzing I'm a fan of aggressive zone behind it. QBs don't know what they are throwing into most times. With man coverage you know pre-snap where you are going with the ball.

Wade Phillips was on the radio in Atlanta when he was with the Falcons and he said he would use either scheme depending on the personnel he had. He thought people got too tied up in running a particular thing.

Yet his teams always happen to run a 3-4.

I could definitely see where being able to coach both well would be extremely beneficial in this day and age of musical coordinators. If you're just a 3-4 guy or a 4-3guy, your job opportunities are much less. When you only have 1-3 years to build a winner, being able to field a winner with the guys you have has to be ideal.

Bates came really close to blocking a punt in the outback bowl. He just missed it by probably a inch or two. He was just a redshirt freshman this past year and I think if people give him time he is going to be a real good player before it is all said and done.
