We can win every single game next year. Could have done it this year, but the likelihood is so much greater. I think we go 11-2, but I swear... you can't force me to choose a possible loss besides Bama... and I straight up think we beat those jokers too.
Regarding "Signature Wins". It is a moving target. I see it as two categories:
1. Based on ranking and your team's ranking: By this, a win against USCe in Butch's first season counts. They were between 9-11th, IIRC. A top 10 victory when you are unranked for quite some time does the trick. At this point, based on the talent we now have... only a top 3-5 victory counts in this category. So, no. I don't think this is a signature win. This is a nice win against an outmatched opponent who was ranked way too highly. No one thought NW was going to win.
2. Rivalry Scalps: UGA, Florida, & Bama. No matter where they are ranked... just due to the fact that we have had streaks to each of these squads, it counts, even if they are pitiful. Butch claimed an UGA scalp this year... who ended up with a good record anyways. Next year, he should absolutely get Florida, and as I said, I think we get Bama too, but that is the top goal outside of championships
Keys to next season (IMO):
1. We should get FL next year. Should have gotten them this year. I think they'll be slightly better on O next year but not as good on D. Plus it's in our house.
2. We've got to learn how to play when we're the favorite as opposed to the underdog. I realize we were favored last year in a couple of our big games but we'll be favored in most next year.
3. To reach the playoff, we'll most likely have to beat Bama twice. I realize there's no guarantee that Bama gets there again but most of the west teams are taking a step back. Auburn, A&M, LSU will all be about the same as last year or slightly worse IMO. OM will probably be the challenger to Bama next year. If we have to lose one to Bama it would probably be in our best interest to lose the regular season game and win the SECCG.
4. Obviously players staying will have a huge impact on our success next year. JRM, Cam, and Kamara all leaving would be a major blow IMO.
5. Coaching changes could play a huge roll next year. Even if we upgrade there is no guarantee that the transition will be smooth. Players meshing with new position coaches is not always smooth.
6. Improved passing attack. We've got to be able to stretch the field vertically to really reach the potential of this offense. This offense is very similar to OM's but they have the benefit of stretching the field. With the threat of a deep passing game suddenly those 5,6,8 yards runs by Hurd/Kamara become 15, 20 yarders that go for the occasional long TD. Whether it's Dobbs' limitations, scheme, or WR ability, we really need to use the whole field.
7. Recruiting is a significant factor next year. We are in a much better position to have to not rely on freshman than we've been in a long time. Given that, we still have some holes to fill. The keys to this class are Alexis (already in the fold) and Kongbo. These two would be relied on heavily next year. Alexis should be a very capable replacement for Williams (undervalued IMO), and Kongbo would be the ultimate compliment to Barnett. Not to say some of the other guys currently don't have that potential.
All in all I think it possible to make a run at the playoff. As always breaks need to fall your way. I think the schedule is in our favor next year. Hopefully all the pieces come together for a special season next year.
