I'm prepared to give Butch as many years as he wants as long he continues to show improvement and continues to recruit well.
Butch does such a great job of using momentum. It's not even just about the games right now. We're still in building mode. So to me, as long as we don't lose momentum and keep the train on the tracks (get to a bowl game, close out the recruiting class strong and either keep the staff together or upgrade) then I am feeling good. All the other stuff is just details and fun stuff to fill the time until the wins start pouring in consistently. We are watching these players and this program rebuild from the ground up before our eyes. That's been pretty fun to me after watching us slowly deteriorate instead the last decade or so.
At some point in the next few years we'll be able to look back and see that Tennessee is once again a stable program that wins up to it's capabilities every year. To me that is winning 8-11 games most years. That should be the average for Tennessee. I want some years to go beyond that and win more, but I understand that when Butch got here, we were not sitting at our average. We had fallen well below. We are inching our way up and everything points to us being able to reach that "average" mark in the next year or two at least.
But even if we had gotten there this year or last year it really wouldn't have done anything except for skew the expectations for the people that didn't understand the rebuilding process that had to take place.
I'm not going to get hung up on the details of the Missouri loss or play calling at this point.
Do you think Alabama fans are super pleased about their play calling every game? Do you think Mississippi State fans are right now? They're not.
Football isn't meant to be played perfectly. It's meant to be played with discipline and controlled intensity. You have to take risks. You have to be predictable. Sometimes you're predictable early in the game to set something up for later in the game. We don't always know or understand the play callers mind set or intentions. It's a chess game and you're trying to out maneuver and out think the guy on the other side. It kind of bothers me how many people let themselves get hung up on play calling. It's like getting mad because you flipped a coin and it didn't land on heads. You gave it a shot. Kudos to the guy that called tails.
Sometimes bad play calls go for touchdowns and sometimes good play calls get stuffed at the line of scrimmage. The play call nazi's on this board are wearing me out.
The things that make me angry when watching football games is penalties and unforced errors... Fumbles and careless turnovers. I look for our team to hustle and play hard and together. I want to see guys come off the bench and step up and play better than I expected. I want to see players improve as the year goes on. Especially in a young team like this. I'm seeing it this year. So yep. I'm full Butch.
