Definitely before my time. You'd be surprised, or maybe you wouldn't, at how smart some of our players really are. It's one of the reasons why I'm very happy the perception of things is changing at UT among more students and that the players are seen as more a part of the student body.

Most of the football players were known as "jocks" back in the 60's. Nobody I knew questioned their intelligence; but rather many of them appeared not to be motivated to get an education ("goofed off").

I'll second this. Never saw or experienced any tension between players and the student body. Had several players in classes too.

I recall a lot of people complaining about how much of a jerk Casey Clausen was. And I remember some people complaining about special treatment for the football players. But otherwise I don't recall it being a huge issue. But I can see UTprof's point.

Butch got after Darr at practice today. This made me laugh:

After the punt protection unit did a good job on one particular punt, Matt Darr shanked the punt, much to Jones’ dismay as the head coach said “everything was good except the punt.” Jones went on to tell Darr that he likely has 12 punts left in his career and that there are no punters in the arena league.

I don't think it's ever been what I'd call a huge deal just something there in terms of complaints about fairness, university priorities and resources, and whatnot and more aimed at how the university handles things.

I don't mind football players getting perks either, but damn the UT student gym is total garbage.

I'm over at ASU for grad school and it really shows what I was missing going to the gym at UT.

On the other hand, I literally ran into Tiny Richardson after working out, so that was cool. Mistook him for a wall.

I did my grad school at MTSU. Their student gym was a dump compared to UT. I always thought UT had a pretty nice gym for students.

Dobbs was a rock star on campus last year.

TL;DR - CBJ has changed the perception of football players. His players are a part of the university and active in the student body instead of just a football team that's cloistered away. They are student-athletes in truth rather than simply title and that is incredibly important to students -- this is their university and all students are a part of it including student-athletes (aka #OneTennessee). Josh Dobbs is the ultimate symbol of that - a football player who is a genuine student just like any other student on campus and that is incredibly important to student body and university community.

Gave you a like, but did you actually just use the word "cloistered" on VN? :p

Behind The Scenes: Tennessee vs. South Carolina (11/1/14) - YouTube

For some reason Vic Wharton's face and celebration (3:50 mark) makes me real happy after South Carolina misses their OT kick. Just takes me back to all the work he put in helping us piece that class together. That was a great win. I'm still not really over it.

Some families here are getting together for Thanksgiving, and there is no football on at that time, so I offered to bring that game to show. No one there knows the result. Will be fun

In my 1st semester of freshman year, my roommate had Shazzon Bradley in math class. It was a Tuesday/Thursday class that lasted roughly an hour and half. When test time came, everyone in class got a blue papered test and Shazzon got a pink papered test. It took most the full time to finish, but Shazzon was in and out in 10 minutes.

2nd semester, I had him in a T/Th social studies class. It was open book and hard as hell that took the entire time. Shazzon was done in roughly 20 minutes.

I go to church with Shazzon Bradley. You will not meet a nicer, more considerate person.

I know someone that went to high school with Shazzon and other family members and they said all the family members were very nice, respectable and well mannered. They were taught that at home.
Also, Shazzon had a learning disability and had a volunteer tutor (a former high school teacher) that helped him with a lot of his work in college (this is what I was told). I also believe there was a segment on a Knoxville TV station about that teacher helping him.

You inviting the Bamers? You should show the last three quarters of that game but cut off the score at the end...

I'm just going to leave this here and slowly back out of the thread

Not to get real picky but he was asked how many he would "sign in this class". His response was that he would "recruit a full class". Not the same thing guys :):)
