I'm watching the 2004 Florida game. I was a junior in high school. Erik Ainge's emergence. He struggles in this one at times, but that touchdown pass to Bret Smith in the early 4th to tie the game at 21. Clutch as hell. The throw is way high where only his guy could get it. Bret Smith leaps in the air and snags it nonchalantly like a ninja and tip toes gracefully into the checkerboards. Boom.
Mind you, this happened Immediately after Florida had just ran the ball down our throats the drive before to the 3 yard line and then got stuffed on 3 straight plays. And then this Roach guy misses the kick! They could have easily gone back up 14 right then, or at the very least we should have been down 10. It was a chip shot.
Brent Schaeffer showed flashes of excellence in this game... But also had two crucial fumbles. He had us driving so well in the 3rd quarter at one point. Just a sick spin move in the open field in tons of traffic and ran like a 20 yard gain to get us in the red zone. And then got blindsided on the next play and turned it over.
Our defense is fun to watch. Unfortunately we lost Kevin Simon in the first half and you can tell they are having to adjust. Also Jesse Mahelona was clogging the middle like a damn lion in his native tundra. Kevin Burnett. Huah. He might have been my favorite player of that whole era.
It's just awesome to see a really talented and disciplined Tennessee defense. I'm reminded that it's possible. Florida is just a school with a series of highs and lows like anyone else. New people coming and going. Same as us. But lately, we've had a lot more talented people coming, they've had more talented people going. I'm feeling an end to this streak lurking on the horizon in a big way. Like honestly.... I'm not even scared of them. We are going to take over that rats nest of a stadium while we send their greasy fans scurrying home halfway through the 3rd quarter. It's going to be ugly and Dobbs will lead the band in Rocky Top while we all celebrate the win I've been waiting patiently for since that oh so glorious day in 2004 when the Vols stole one from the gators.
Go big orange forever.
