Cool. That would be nice to see some more information out there about the actual scheme. More fans being informed on what is actually going on out there is always a good thing.

Our run game is primarily zone with some gap mixed in. No one is being read when we run gap. If the defense has 2 safeties deep no one is being read on the zone. If they only have 1 deep safety, then the backside DE is unblocked on the zone and presumably being read.

They need to explain it to all of the D coaches in the league too. That way they can be confused and think Worley might actually keep the ball instead of keying on the backs. Power run it and forget this crap until we have the depth or skill to run it. Power runs and we are likely 4-1 now.

@Volquest_Rivals: Butch Jones on D. Barnett: "He's the first one after the game to come hug me, tell me 'we just have to keep believing coach, keep working'"

Barnett is a monster. He gets held or tackled almost every play (with no flags of course) because no one can hold him back. I think he's our best defensive player.

Explain to me how that would keep our oline from getting blown off the ball like they have been?

I get it we ran the power run in the golden age, but Coleman thomas is still gonna get blown by and Jashon Robertson is still gonna jump early.

You can call the greatest play in the world, but if your Offensive line and players can't excute it then its rendered useless.

Correct, and as a result, you call plays that the offense has proven to be able to execute, from both practice and previous games.

Most baffling is the staff has not called those plays often enough.

They continue to call the same plays again and again that the offense has demonstrated that they cannot execute.

Honestly I question whether our OL would be able to execute a power run game. With them being so young, they're not nearly as strong as they need to be. A zone scheme doesn't require the OL to fire off the ball and get as much push as a power scheme (I'm fairly sure. Admittedly I'm no expert.) A zone running game is probably this OL's best chance at opening up some holes.

I agree that all of this could definitely go away once we get our line built back up and the right QB in. It'll just be something I wonder about until it actually happens, because he seems pretty married to what they're doing on offense and is going to live or die by it. I think he's great for the program, so I would hate for that to be his one big flaw.

Seems to me that Butch and Bajakian had one of two options in regards to the offense this year:

1) Stick with what got you to the dance (a zone-read based spread).

Or

2) Adapt your offense to a senior QB with limited mobility and a serviceable arm.

They chose to stick with the zone-read, which means that until we get offensive linemen, a qb that is a threat to run, and healthy TEs to attack the middle of the field, we're going to be mediocre on offense.

I'm an optimist, but I admit to being very frustrated with Bajakian's predictable play calling (first down - zone read with no qb keep threat; second down - WR screen; 3rd down - hoping a WR can make a play the sideline).

I'm hoping that Bajakian is a master craftsmen when he has all of the tools. In the meantime, someone needs to hand him a roll of duct-tape and say, "Just make it work, man. Just make it work..."

I think my only issue is the tempo. Tennessee doesn't have the horses to trust the o line to pick up a sudden blitz. I'm looking for hard counts and some time to see them and adjust on plays that need time to develop. A bubble screen is one thing but a traditional play shouldn't be snapped immediately. Imo.

They still have to fire off the ball and get a good push. Zone has the reputation of being a finesse scheme and that's one of the biggest misconceptions in football. Inside zone (the play we run more than any other) is built around downhill running and double team blocks at the point of attack.

That being said, I don't think gap runs or power formations would be any more beneficial to us than zone "spread" runs.

Does anyone really think we'll be better off on offense taking Von Pearson out to put Joe Stocstill in?

I agree. Get rid of the uptempo. Mix up the snap count and let the poor boys get their bearings straight before snapping it.

Just contemplatively looking out the window trying to figure out where this program goes from here.

The thing that bugs me is the difference in program development of us vs others. Was Ole Miss that much better off 3 years ago than we were 2 years ago? Somehow I can't see us as a top 5 team next year. And I have been thinking we were about 1 year behind Ole Miss up to now. And what about KY? We have beaten them every year except one for over a quarter of a century and now it appears we could be passed by them, a basketball school with no football pedigree at all. Now Miss St did take longer for Mullen to build what they have but again, I would hope we have more of a tradition and brand than them. But maybe it has been too long since we were relevant to the teenagers of today so we are no better off than them from a recruiting standpoint.

It is mentally exhausting year after year to hear we are 1-2 years away from being competitive. As fast as we fill up the talent bucket from above with new recruits, we lose them out the bottom to graduation or washout. But at the same time a good percentage of those graduates are good enough to make it in the league.

End of rant. I know it will get better. I'm just tired. To be this close and not break through. Especially to those a$$holes. and then have to listen to their a$$hole coach and his comments. :thud:

I agree that tempo sometimes hurts us. Several times we've tried to snap it quick and end up having busts on the line resulting in negative plays. With our line and how young we are, I wish we'd do more of the check with me stuff based on the defense. This is the best possible way of getting into and running the right play. We don't have the horses yet to impose our will on a defense through tempo. This also greatly reduces the risk for busts/negative plays that are drive killers for our offense. It also uses more clock which means more rest for our heavily relied upon defense. JMO.

Exactly. If Butch really can't see that then he is not the guy. Next man up. If he is just covering then he better get the OC straightened out quick. There are still moving companies with moving vans in Knoxville. I would not be too surprised to see the OC get a visit from one. Our fan base may not be as smart as the coaches but we are not football illiterate either. Some of this is just common sense even. Like helping out the OT by chipping for example. Throwing to North more. Bring in a Mike Leach type OC and match that with our steadily improving defense. There is always another coach that wants your job. It might be easier to find the right guy real soon if we do not have him now. Grades are better. More talent. Less apathy with the fans.
you guys are unreal. We lose to Florida so now he's Dooley. This is not xbox. This is a rebuild being dependent on freshman. He's recruiting at a high level but he's Dooley. He's brought the fan base together but he's Dooley. Defense is the best we've seen in years but he's Dooley. Former players are united and coming back to campus but he's Dooley. He didn't run a play that you think would work better and we lost so he's Dooley. #zoneread4what

As bummed as I am about our offense (which is MOSTLY on Dooley for no OLine depth), I'm pumped about seeing what this defense looks like with the DL class that's about to arrive.

It's gonna be sick.

Was just looking at Ole Miss his schedule. We could be a trap game for them, they have to go on the road to college station which I'm sure they'll be up for to solidify their top five ranking after beating Alabama. Then they come home and face us before a tough West game against LSU. Maybe they'll overlook us a little bit and that somehow helps. I don't know I'm grasping for straws at this point.

I actually expected a much more humble CBJ in his presser. He does realize pissing off the press and fans isn’t the way to go in this town correct?

His Offensive coaching staff swung and missed this weekend and hit the fans in the f… ing head with the bat on Saturday and he is getting “chippy”?

I want my coach pissed off. That tells me he cares. He doesn't like to lose. His job is not to make you feel better through some humility. May be he should cry up there and have snot bubbles to make you feel better this week.
