I feel like at some point one of the sites tried to knock his speed and athleticism, but then he put up crazy numbers at The Opening. Sounded like a generic white LB eval that someone wrote without actually researching Bates.

Sports and Hollywood are two of the last places where it's largely acceptable to stereotype and typecast. I don't think the white vs. black associations are intentional so much as 90 percent of what they do is typecasting a player or actor and a whole lot of money is on the line when they predict how one will be (getting it right or wrong can get you promoted or fired) and they're risk averse. That kind of thinking bleeds over into notions about 'black' athletes and 'white' athletes.

I can see that being the case. Calling a white LB one of the better athletes at his position in a class gets noticed and will be remembered if it turns out to be wrong. Calling him a smart player who lacks sideline to sideline speed is like a weather man predicting a 40% chance of rain. Nobody is going to notice whether you were right or wrong.

Do you think he could be a Vinnie Sunseri type player in the smarts and heart and soul dept? Also, since Bates is an LB, who all would you compare him too? (I realize he's gonna be his own player but I'm trying to get a feel for his style, strengths, and weaknesses and how he might play).

Stronger, bigger, faster Bill Bates with genetic football instincts and learning from a true student of the game...Bill Bates
Apparent same level of Love And Pride for the Big Orange as that of Bill Bates :hi:

Jmo of course :)

6.25 would be one of the best backs we've ever had. It's better than a lot of guys who go to the NFL. He'd start if he did that well. I'd love to see some of these projections happen, but I think it won't.

I'm not agreeing he'll average that much, but he will make a impact from the jump.

Why is the add that always comes up when I go to post about a site called "Filipino Cupid"?! I've never even slept with a Filipino girl before... Though the pictures they are showing makes me curious

What happened was you navigating your usual Philip Seymour Hoffman death face site and this popped up under You May Also Like

It pisses me off that they won't announce what package the SEC Network will be on. I made the switch to ATT Uverse but they don't know what package it will be on until August 28th Meaning, I may have to fork out more money when they release because I won't have the right package. ****

Rant over.

I think he will be similar to CJ Mosley from Bama.

AT&T values their customers as far as they can throw them.

There was a scout back during his cycle of recruitment who basically said he liked Bates a lot in terms of him being a great kid but that he thought he just didn't have what it took to go much higher. IIRC, he spoke anonymously.

No one else has said much bad that I remember but I think there might've been one or two others that were more cautious about his potential than the vast majority of sportswriters.

Ceiling at AJ Hawk level to me personally. Not a bad player at all to be compared to.

I see that you live in southern California, so my information is irrelevant. Nevertheless, we also made the switch back to U-Verse recently and our sales rep specifically said that the SEC Network will automatically become part of the Sports Package available to U-300 level subscribers, effective August 4th.

May be off base here, but Bates films reminds me of Sean Lee or Kiko Alonso. Hope I'm right. Both are awesome minus Sean Lee's injury problems. Either way can't wait to see what he and some of our new defenders we're recruiting do!

Keith Bulluck is the comparison I would make.

The best answer I've been able to get so far is that Uverse (AT&T) will carry the SEC Network alongside ESPN stations for the eleven states in the SEC. For other locations, you'll need the sports package. If you currently get ESPN on Uverse, and you live in an SEC state, you'll get the SEC Network. I wouldn't take this as gospel, but it was reported that way by at least one source.

I get the stupid Big Ten network; I better have the SEC Network in August.
