Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

I was asking for the same, lol.

On Ainge's QB take: I only caught part of it. He used a baseball analogy, saying that Worley and Dobbs would bat .300 but are strictly singles type hitters. Ferguson is batting .350+ with the ability to take it out of the park. He noted that Ferguson is showing more consistency than he did at this time last year which is the main cause for optimism. Very little mention of Peterman other than that the game seems too fast for him but if he can grasp the offense he can still maintain value as depth. All in all a long way until the fall. It's not a sprint but a marathon in a QB battle, but Ferguson seems to have the upper hand based on early Spring reps.

That isn't what he said exactly. On Ferguson he said he's batting more like .200 right now but those hits are grand slams and that IF he can get his BA up to .350 with those grand slams he could be special.

Let's also keep in mind that past failures can aid the right mindset to growth.

I can personally provide many examples to this fact.

He seemed to do just fine under Butch at Cincy winning 2 conference championships as DC.

3rd in conference in defense in 2011 and 1st in conference in 2012

agreed that we might should give him a bit more time to get talent in that fits his system and develop our current roster to better mold them to what he needs

im hopeful our D will be good next year - our back 7 will be considerably deeper and more talented - lot of youth but a lot of talent

It's going to be amazing to watch how much better our coaching staff gets as the talent level on the field increases.

I hope you're right. I'm with WuTang on this one. Personnel aside, there were some calls last year on both sides of the ball that made me say 'WTF'.

I hope EVERYBODY learned a lot last year.

UGA game was great play calling for a lot of that game.
(I don't get many opportunities to post during the day anymore so, forgive the long post)

Yep...and I'd throw in SC to boot. However, by season's end, all of the good will the team earned over the first half of the season was all but wiped out by the end of the year. There's no question that they were building steam by mid-season but, that was all forgotten by the end of the year and an especially ugly game against Vandy. My biggest question is which games are more representative of the staff?

I've been most critical of Jancek as DC. His time as Co-DC at UGA was...abysmal. However, who was more at fault, Willie Martiniez (FWIW, I like Martinez as a DB coach) or Jancek? Either way, they're both on staff here and...I don't know, maybe UGA had the wrong combination but, it doesn't make me feel great. Until he proves me otherwise, I remain skeptical of him as an SEC DC. Here's hoping he's more UGA and SC game than Vandy and UK...

Bajakian--I'm still on the fence. The deficiencies at QB hindered the offense last year and anytime you're implementing a new offense and new QB, new RB's, new WR's...expect growing pains. I liked how he utilized Pig and I get the feeling that another year of coaching will yield better results but when he lined up in the backfield, you knew what was coming. I don't have a beef with the play calling--Auburn and Oregon does the same thing. What they do better than anyone is execute those play(s) to perfection. That translates to coaching--but also to their level of talent.

My main criticism of the coordinators is this: where do they stack up against the rest of the SEC's? Jancek had talent at UGA but he (and Martinez) fell flat on his face. Bajakian has been with Butch throughout his tenure as a HC and had success...in lesser conferences. I feel better about Bajakian. Optimistic...not yet, but I felt like the offense started to get somewhat of a rhythm as the season went along, until the Vandy game, at least. Jancek's tenure at UGA is my main contention with him. Say what you will to defend it, but what other criteria should we use to judge him as a coordinator, recruiting?

This year on Defense:
The influx of talent across the board is most definitely going to help. Our LB corps is going to be one of the best we've had in years and our DB's will be improved. As usual, however, the D will only go as far as the pass rush will take them--and we haven't had one in far too long. I'll be watching Vereen very closely this year. I haven't been this excited about a DE since Jacques Smith's Freshman year...let's hope the switch comes on with Vereen (on the field).

This year on Offense:
We go as far as the OL can take us. Replacing ALL FIVE OL is never an ideal scenario for any team and if Mahoney gets them playing well by the UGA or UF game, he'll have earned a raise, IMO. Obviously, QB is crucial but, IMO, if the OL can't keep pass rushers out of their faces and away from their blind sides, we might as well start a WR or RB there b/c they'll be running for their lives.

The fact remains that there are still a lot of unanswered questions about Jancek and Bajakian's viability as SEC coordinators; specifically as to whether their collective background's can be used as empirical evidence to predict their performance, going forward. However, their ability to recruit, change the culture of the team/fan base, and promote an environment of upward mobility cannot be understated and, in that regard, they are easily in the upper-percentile of SEC coordinators.

Agreed. Even if you did know what to look for, you couldn't see all the QBs throw on that video to give a decent comparison. Hence why I rescinded my comments. Glad you talked some football with me, though, it was my first decent football conversation since I graduated Airborne School. I always welcome some good football talk, and anxiously await for more film and football talk in the coming weeks before my next training phase starts.

Edit: Btw, hope you don't feel I was getting super defensive, I just enjoy a good debate.
All the Way!

No, most of my OSUT class went there, though. They deploy in August I believe. I'm in the 18 X-ray program, the SF training program. We start pre-Selection on the 28th and then we go through Selection. Should I get selected, I have two more years of training through different courses. If not, I'll probably end up at the 82nd.

Btw, 101 isn't technically Airborne anymore, they switched to Air Assault (fast rope out of helicopters) back in Vietnam. I think they have some airborne units still active, but that isn't their "thing" anymore.

Btw: OSUT is Infantry Basic and AIT all in one. I forgot that not everyone on here is Military and wouldn't know what this it.
I was a Medic in the 2/504 PIR and used to provide Medical coverage out at Camp McCall for the q course, I will say this, good luck and be a sponge!

Yes. We sure did but if he made that decision because of fans then he is not the right coach.

:twocents: Like when raising kids, sometimes you have to "give them what they want", knowing that they will fail. (Not on something major, mind you) Once they have failed, they soon realize that, hey, pops may not be quite as dumb as I thought he was.

The next time, they may be more inclined to listen and trust in pop's opinion more so than theirs.

Probably not at all what Butch was thinking, but I'll believe it because it will help me sleep better!:)

Personally, I will withhold my opinion on Bajakian and Jancek for the time being. I'm still a skeptic, but the roster is still a year away from being where it needs to be to have decent depth and starters. I will say there was more than one occasion where I did not agree with certain moves/play calls. Need to see at least some nice progression having some kids finally be in a scheme for more than a year

With all due respect, I didn't realize you'd gotten experimental surgery to get your balls removed.

Didn't, we the fans, almost demand it.

Worley short armed a dozen throws. North should have had four TDs by then and Jon Johnson one bomb as well. It really hurt us. I know Worley played decent against UGA and The Cockers but I really hope he isn't the best QB we have. I can't handle all the alligator armed throws and misses.

I'm a little bit late for the Jancek discussion, but I think he's a good DC. With the talent we had last year and the way we played UGA/SCar/and a few others shows he knows what he's doing IMO. UGA is where DC's go to suck and get fired. What I like specifically about Jancek's scheme is that it's not a true 4-3 or a 4-2-5 it's a combination. I think the Justin Wilcox's of the world that run a pure 4-2-5 are setting themselves up to potentially be ran all over. I love the idea of getting some big safeties or small LBs like Tez and Elliot Berry in a good bit.

Time will tell if Jancek is the right man for the job, but year 1 was way above what I expected defensively.
