Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

It is easy to see the landscape changing here in the US over the next 25 yrs in light of the head injury issues in football and the corresponding knee/ leg injuries as rule change. Throw in college football unionization and the changes that will bring. I can see parents pushing their kids more towards soccer as they grow. They already start them out when they are little. I think more and more will encourage them to stick with it as they get into high school and college.

Don't think soccer is much of a threat to football in this country. MAYBE in 50 years or so, but not yet. Baseball, basketball, and hockey are certainly under threat, but the American public is so hungry for sports that I think all can have a place.

Maybe. Hope you're right.

All of these negative stories and dark predictions about the future of football, along with seeing soccer becoming more popular, have me worried.

See there is the disconnect. This is the last I will say on it. People are soooo bent on proving themselves right that they can't even see what someone else is saying. I wasn't saying that you aren't right about the type of coach UT is gonna end up with. All I was saying is that it isn't a definite, such as you stated. It may very well be likely, but unless you are Dave Hart you can't legitimately make a guarantee of that.

See what I'm saying? I'm not saying you aren't right, just that to state it as fact isn't right.

I already posted what LWS said was the budget; that's the justification, here.

I have no issue with being wrong. I will gladly admit it, if I am.

Would you prefer for me to put "IMO" after everything? I feel it's pretty clear it's already my opinion.

Soccer was going to become super duper popular in America 25 years ago too. It didn't happen then either.

Americans didn't have access to the international game the way they do now. Every summer many of the top teams come for exhibitions and the games sell out in minutes. America is obviously hungry to see the best players in the world. When they all come to America to play competitively, then it will really take off. Unfortunately for you.

But very fortunate for Dust10 and I who really love that sport too. I didn't like soccer until I started getting access to the international game like he says :) (blows a kiss to Alex Morgan) Soooooo....HOT....want to touch the heine...

If you want to keep arguing, you don't think Tennessee's program and roster was generally in the dumps when Martin took over? You are making it sound like he took over a well oiled machine. I don't think he did. But regardless, within 3 years, he had us in the top 25 and the sweet 16 - which is among the top 10 or 15 seasons we've ever had in program history by various measures.

No. Golden, McRae, Tatum, Stokes, Maymon, and Hall was a solid rotation that should have performed far better than it did. Also got minutes out of Richardson and McBee.

The talent CM inherited was far better than what he's left us with.

According to Ericvol, he just said this on VQ.

Soccer is not taking over anything in America now or in 50 years unless we get conquered by some foreign power and people are forced to watch.

Agree. I think football is as big as ever and only growing. Soccer is fine and all, but it's clearly the inferior sporting event to watch on TV. Football was made for TV viewing pleasure.

I don't care enough to argue. I'll watch both sports until the day I die and how the general public receives them is irrelevant to me.

Soccer is fun to play or to attend in person but not fun to watch on tv. Just like hockey and baseball. JMO

I like watching the World Cup like majors in golf. Other than that, I don't view the events on tv much.

That is why football will be the top sport in the US for the foreseeable future. All sports are fun to attend but football is the ultimate TV sport. As more people stay home to watch in HD football will stay on top.

You should be.

Baseball was America's sport until the NFL took over. Everything has a life cycle. The problem is the cash collection is at its highest point when the business/industry has peaked and started down. So it deceives the participants into thinking they can keep riding the gravy train.

A major factor is when you lose the interest of a great many young people to a different sport - it is only a matter of time.

Baseball never recovered from the strike. That said its too slow of a game for our "fast paced" modern lifestyle. So is soccer. Football (NFL) anyway us ever changing to keep the game up tempo and that is why it has staying power....for now.

I heard cricket is poised to take over soccer. The word is that the soccer loving hipsters are moving on to something more foreign and exclusive now that so many Americans jumped onto to soccer wagon. Cricket is already the #2 most viewed sport in the world. At the very same time foreigners are also experimenting more and more with American sports. So, in the future the foreigners will be playing American football, basketball, and baseball while we're playing soccer, cricket, and rugby. (Disclaimer: I'm only kidding.)

I don't disagree. Mainly asked since the Silverbacks have been there for a while.

Seen the picture Columbus tweeted out?

Yes that would be great lol :)

I hope not. If soccer ever becomes über popular in America, we will find a way to Americanize it and make it awful.
