JONES: We just concluded a very productive semester - the 2nd highest GPA in our program. 40 players with a 3.0 or above.
Just to clarify, he said 2nd highest in program history for a Fall semester. What Butch and this staff have done with academic/football relations is something they should be extremely proud of. No secret it was a bit of a mess before he got here.
Butch deserves a lot of credit for getting the academic people on the same page with the football program and stressing to them how important academics are for his players. That brick in the foundation of this program is just as big as any recruits we may get, imo. I doubt we'll be reading any stories similar to the one recently about fsu's players getting preferential treatment.
The faculty appreciation breakfast Butch did back during spring practice was a great idea (one of many) and seems to be paying off. Iirc, the moto for that event was ONE TENNESSEE.
Butch not only eliminated the negative recruiting about our recent academic troubles but he turned our academic support system into a big selling point on the recruiting trail. He's now able to sell parents on the fact that their son's will have the best resources in the country to be successful in the classroom first before they can be successful on the field. Big credit to Butch also for getting Joe Scoggins from Mizz to oversee the Thornton Center after he was there 11 years and is considered one of, if not the, best in the business. That probably wasn't just as easy as offering him more money.
We all know the one coach who this irritates the most. Haha, I love it. I'd be curious to see whether or not vu player's gpa's have increased or decreased under JF. I'd bet they've slipped a bit with some of the trash he's brought there. Those recruiting profiles Butch mentioned in today's presser.....yeah, I seriously doubt JF actually cares about the character and other aspects of a recruit as much as Butch does.
Butch has taken one of vu's biggest selling points in a good education and has shown over these last two semesters that he takes it just as serious. He's not just talking the talk. There used to be no question where to go between UT and vu if a recruit was very serious about his academics. Now, not so much.
