Frank martin is a cheater and an over the top Demeaning coach. He's a POS that caught lightning in a bottle and had some good sound bites that have greatly changed the perception on what he really is.
He’s a cheater? I’m sure carolina fans wish he was cheating because their recruiting is pretty meh. They rarely get top recruits.

He’s also not a piece of ish. I live here in Columbia and know people that cover the team. Never heard a bad thing about him from people that know how to handle tough coaching. Is he a hard ass? No doubt. But the dude’s family escaped Cuba and he grew up in a rough part of Miami. He is who he is. Some guys can’t handle that.

Yea most coaches don't get on their players. I mean Barnes is all warm and fuzzy.

Well that doesn't address the cheating part

But I sat behind his bench a few years back and his words to one of his players were: "you damn stupid MFer. Sit by me until I decide you aren't the worst Fing player I have ever coached"

Now Lord knows I can live with being rough on players but in my mind that crosses the line. Now if that doesn't bother you then just stick with the fact he's a cheater which is proven fact.

"Literally" is literally one of the most overused words of the current day and age.

It would be really hilarious to troll someone by just randomly shouting out really positive, innocuous things like that every few minutes of a two hour basketball game.

Real life trolling is just being a dick

I think this probably happens more than you realize.

I don't mind the cussing. I just think once it gets personal it's over the top but again
I think he's a cheater and a very average coach without looking at that part of his style.

If you look at his teams his teams always play poorly at the end of years because they get tired of him. Even the final 4 year they did that before lightning in a bottle caught fire

What cheating are you talking about?

Man...I can't figure out how people legit dislike Rick Barnes.

Digressing from the current topic a tad, but I was just thinking of how good of a man he is. Gets after his players but seems to always respect them. I was on the tubes looking for that TJ Ford Twitter clip when he was talking about how proud he was of TJ graduating. Naturally, Penny's BS popped up, and I was reading comments...like WOW people bashing him for things he didn't even say, because Penny said it.

Honestly it was the most racist thing I've seen. I guess being an old faith driven white man is a problem, granted YT comments are mostly trolls but still...

Haven't paid enough attention to his career to have an opinion on the second part, but I definitely agree with the first part.

If you're a coach, you're the adult in the room and you have to set the example. Berating and diminishing players (if that's what he said-- "You damn MFer, you're the dumbest SOB I've ever coached" type stuff) is completely unacceptable.

Delineating the action from the person is a subtle way of communicating and demonstrating leadership-- an example: "You're an idiot" v. "That's something an idiot would do." If all your language tends to be Part 1, then you're going to lose a lot of respect, very quickly.

Y'all are really letting Penny take up some headspace, huh?

If you stick with cheating you might ought to pack a lunch filling that list out.

I went to a SC practice with a former gamecock player the year they made the final 4 run. That's pretty common for Frank and actually a lot of coaches in various sports.

Honestly what has been baffling me is the level of coverage Penny has gotten over it.

Barnes didn't even really respond to or instigate anything, and Penny seems to have been given an overly high platform to lash out. ESPN specifically, even PTI did a segment.

If anything is in my "headspace" it's how/why Penny as a 1st year coach was suddenly in the spotlight trying to fuel some sort of bad blood with a coach in Barnes who took the highest of roads to squash it all.

SIAP, great post game interview with Frank Martin last night after the game, great breakdown of UT and how and why we won. I like this guy, classy way to take a beatdown and give good insight. Penny should watch this too...

Well worth the watch...

Awesome analysis... really puts into perspective how good we are (even without Bowden and Alexander). Penny should definitely listen to Martin and find out how a coach should act. Class act right there.

Did you/do you hate Bruce pearl? 95% of college coaches cheat. That’s a weird reason to hate a coach

I think I spelled out why I dislike martin. The biggest reason is i don't think he's very good.
His teams fade because they get tired of him.

Yea the way he treats his players and his cheating are other reasons

Well I have been a coach for many years. Head Coach in basketball and baseball, highest level high school baseball. I learned as I got older that you can't ride kids non stop or they will quit on you, they think they will never please you. Let them know when they do well as often as you fuss. The thing is people don't notice the compliments because they are not as easy to spot, usually in the locker room. If your barking and fussing, which is part of the job, then people notice.

Penny, while he won't (and probably can't) name names, has "heard" rumblings of other coaches that don't like how he had gotten the job. I don't doubt that, but it's being a little thin-skinned. He needs to respond with his team's play.

He has gotten praised for being brutally honest, which can be a good thing. Just like everything though, there needs to be some moderation, and he doesn't have a filter. Case in point, "get the F out, Rick Barnes."

What most people outside Knoxville don't realize is that Barnes is a jokester off the court. He was joking with Kesling about the balled up fists on VolCalls that week, and it got back to Penny. Penny responded in a non-joking manner.
