Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Since the night Kiffin bolted, I’ve read and anticipated that our administration would hire the best coach or our coach would hire the best assistant coach available only to be let down by the mediocre, milk toast, drab, boring buddy system. All of these great names come up for HCs, OCs and DCs yet we always end up with a watered down version of who we really want. But, like usual, hope springs eternal and I’m believing for the best.
Maybe we shouldn't have unrealistic expectations....nah, I like dreaming.

I like the recruiting forum becuase one day after the destruction of our season with despair being the pervading sentiment, the posters in this thread are rolling up their sleeves trying to diagnose how to get more talent on this roster. I know we all have dick to do with what happens, but hope is a constant undercurrent here. The speculation about how we turn this thing around helps me when the product on the field isn't worth writing home about.

This is why I hang out here.

It’s built in your contract that you can leave for a promotion with no buyout compensation. That would be HC for an OC.

Do we know that’s in Helton’s contract, or are you just assuming? (Not sure it matters, as I’m sure we would waive at least a substantial portion of it, given the circumstances.)

Did we pay Bama for Pruitt? It’s not in there.

I don’t know about Pruitt, but every contract is different. We ponied up big bucks for Helton with a 3-year commitment, so it would be reasonable IMO to have some mutual commitment on his end (i.e. a buyout if he left early, for any reason or job).

I have not looked at his contract though, so no idea what it says. LA Vol seemed to have a number in mind — not sure if he was looking at the contract.

Yeah he has a buyout...if he leaves for another coordinator job. Dave Aranda is getting paid big bucks to be LSU’s DC. He doesn’t have to pay a dime if he leaves for his own gig. Name the last OC or DC who did.

And Dave Aranda was a big-time coordinator when hired.

But in any case, the larger point is that Dave Aranda’s contract doesn’t tell you anything about Tyson Helton’s contract. I’m sure there are plenty of differences between the two.

This is all I could find with a quick search on mobile:

“The buyouts for Tennessee is the remaining salary due each assistant coach, though it is mitigated by the salaries at their new jobs. Every new coach would owe Tennessee 33 percent of the money remaining on their deals if they leave before Feb. 28, 2019. Those buyouts drop to $50,000 on March 1, 2019.” -247

That suggests that LA Vol’s figure is basically right. Something north of $800k for Helton, depending on when exactly he left, etc.
