I think the only way a lot of people freak out is if we lose both of them. If we split and get to 6 wins and a bowl, I think most will be good with that. Some will freak out regardless though.
Also worth noting he wasn’t playing Buchanan’s position.. little different skill set at nickel
Although I remember Pruitt saying all these guys are cross training at all secondary positions
- VQThe Vols’ quarterback didn’t have to put the offense on his shoulders and carry it like he did at Auburn, but Tennessee doesn’t win that football game without Guarantano making some huge throws.
He completed only 12 passes on the day but those 12 throws went for 197 yards, or a little over 16 yards per completion. His 39-yard scoring strike to Marquez Callaway on the final play of the first half that put the Vols up 17-0 was not only a thing of beauty, it was a big-time play on several levels.
Guarantano first had to show enough pocket presence (an improving skill) to step up and avoid the rush before uncorking an absolutely laser that Callaway went up and snatched.
Some fans have wondered if Guarantano was even the best quarterback on the team. Pruitt’s decision to unwaveringly stick with him would seem to have put that to bed if Guarantano’s play hasn’t.
He’s a guy whose teammates believe in and want to make plays for. Fans hear Pruitt and various pundits talk all the time about how tough Guarantano is to the point that it gets taking for granted. The guys in his locker room don’t take that for granted.
Pruitt hinted a couple of weeks ago about how much responsibility the staff puts on Guarantano every week and how much better the quarterback has gotten at handling those demands.
Guarantano has done a lot of nice things this season, and engineering two wins over ranked opponents sits at the top. However, the fact that he’s shouldered the heavy load he’s carrying without succumbing to the pressure of forcing the issue at times has been impressive to see. He’s not thrown interception since tossing two against Florida six games ago.
Breaking Casey Clausen’s school record for consecutive passes without an interception would be noteworthy under any circumstances. That he did it in a season when the passing game has almost always been charged with carrying the load makes his achievement even more significant.
Guarantano is still a redshirt sophomore, still improving and lest fans forget, working with his third different offensive coordinator since he got to campus. The best is yet to come for No. 2.
I'm glad someone brought this up. If we had been playing fast and aggressive at the start of the possession, we may be farther down the field and no need for the Hail Mary... it worked out, but I am always for trying to take advantage of any scoring opportunity, especially with so much on the line. When we've run the clock out to half, or in this case, started to, it reminds me of Butch taking his foot off the gas and letting teams come back. Obviously, we need to be smart with play calling, but we should always be looking to score, no matter how much time is on the clock.
Pruitt did what most every coach in America would do up 10-0 getting ball to start 2nd half. He took a timeout to get ball back. Then you see what happens on first down and it was near disaster that was an split second away from 10-7 and all momentum lost. So he then said screw this get to halftime. Then chandler pops big run and he changes decision and calls timeout and said get points now. He played it the way it should have been played.
In rewatching first half, Taylor was a split second away from 2 more sacks. Could have easily had 6 sacks on the day. Haven't watched 2half again to count any more shots but he had his hands within reach to take him down two other times in that first half. Total domination on his part that game
I was at the game and the fourth down in Kentucky's territory where we punted and downed it on the 3 yard line, it looked from where I was sitting as though Pruitt was chewing the punter out. It was a perfectly executed punt, so I'm at a loss. The only thing I can think of is maybe the punter was given a green light to fake it if conditions were right and the punter chose not to? Or maybe Pruitt's words of encouragement resemble butt chewing? I don't know. Did anyone else notice this?
CJP said in his presser he was upset that the incomplete pass stopped the clock. He said since UT was getting the 2nd half kickoff he wanted to run the clock out to ensure nothing happened to give UK any momentum, so must have been expecting a running play.

#28 has been playing well. #3 picked off 2 tuuurible passes thrown by a tuuurible QB. Perception based on right place right time. Then after the 2nd INT you see a clear example of WHY #3 has not been getting more playing time. Guarantee you tnt decision for CJP boils mostly down to trust.I don’t get the hate on baylen. He is physical and tackles well. People are giving him crap about the TD but he was in great position that was just the best throw of the night by their qb and that tight end is 6’6 and pretty good. He caught the game winner vs Missouri i think.
