I think your/our standards for play calling have slipped a lot from Butch. I don't think there are any other SEC teams who would want our OC. I watch games with some former D2 players and they laugh at us every game for how predictable we are. By the end of the game they're predicting almost every single play call. It's better than Butch/Scott, but it's still not great. Defensive HC should have hired an elite, proven OC to run that side of the ball.
Helton was not this predictable at prior stops. I am all for giving the players and coaches time to get on the same page before we throw the book away. We actually threw on 1st down against Bama so there is that. Also our passing attack has been reasonably good considering how putrid our run game has been. This is all without the added wrinkles of a rpo QB.

I could be wrong, but Tee called plays at USC and at WKU the HC had quite a bit of input in play calling, right? I don't think Helton has ever been the sole play caller.

I agree wholeheartedly that is why he ask to move but I think the opposite happens. I doubt he sees the field at all at LB this season unless it's against Charlotte. Imo he would have gotten more snaps at RB even with his fumble issues

If LB works out, I hope that we still give him work as short yardage back especially at goalline. I don't see why we couldn't do that at least.

Jennings Taking Advantage of Second Chance With Vols | RTI

NSIAP.. Great article on Jennings. Hoke and Curry kicked him off the team, but Pruitt calls him one of his "favorite players".
remember when a few on here didn’t want this kid back on the team? Sure he should not have said what he said. THAT’S WHO HE HIS!! Dude is passionate all the time. He is the most competitive player on the field guaranteed.

I’m proud of JJ.

I agreed with kicking him off the team. Also agreed with bringing him back. Very glad to have him.

I've not been on the Helton train yet either, but calling for a change at this point is not right IMO. At times I see flashes of brilliance, it's just inconsistent. He needs time to develop QB's and the scheme to fit the style of play CJP wants with the talent he has available. With each new recruiting class that will evolve. I know that is what the coaching staff wants so he can transition the team into CJP's third year when the roster is much better. An improved O-line will help JG a lot next season. I just think it may be getting time to go Plan B with Chryst this season to go with Shrout or Mauer next season if JG doesn't improve enough to lift the team to some wins. It's crunch time for that and the coaches have to be willing to make the change if necessary. A bowl and extra practices are too valuable to miss by coddling JG if he cannot figure it out. I will be pulling for the light bulb to come on with him. Maybe Helton can help that to happen.

There is always a better, more talented FR QB on the roster than who we are running out there onto the field and a QC who is light years better than who we have because "he would never do blah blah blah".

If you listen to fans, every OC in the country is terrible and predictable.

DCs tend to get more leeway until their units really poop the bed. I'm not sure why. Maybe they look at it as more the players' fault because you can pinpoint just a few players to blame on each defensive play.

It probably has a lot to do with fans having an idea what kind of play the offense should call on any given play, but fewer fans think much about defensive alignments and rush tactics.

"I can call the play before the snap every time." Well, if you're just calling run or pass, you have a 50-50 shot. And situational calls do have their universal tendencies.

"Why did they go away from x play? They were killing them in the first quarter with it." Do you think maybe the defense adjusted to take it away?

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I can intelligently second-guess the coaches on both sides of the ball even when I'm working on my 10th beer.

I domt know if people that question Helton and his play calling have listened to Pruitt s pressers. He said there are 5 guys doing it right on offense. Which means they cant get on the Same page with what he is calling. Imagine if he was to call harder plays. I believe he is calling what he knows the player s have a better shot of executing properly. No way he calls harder plays when they cant even get the assignment s right on what some of you say looks basic. Imo on hearing what coach says.

The way I see it. We'll win against Charlotte and Vandy.

USC is a very intriguing game and will come down to turnovers and made field goals.
Missou and Kentucky are also toss ups.

Need to find 3 wins.

I think that’s correct. But there was an article out there about USC’s play calling when we hired Helton. It was odd because a different person called the play based on down and distance. I would bet Clay Helton was very involved as well because he was an OC and QB coach. That’s why I am not convinced that Tee has been solely calling their plays.

Which “elite proven OC” would leave his current situation for anything other than a HC gig?
