Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

So far, UT hasn't penny pinched with Pruitt at all. I haven't heard of anything he's asked for that he hasn't gotten. Now if the team doesn't finish strong against the weaker SEC opponents, there might be some pushback down the road. Hiring him was a calculated risk and giving him free rein to hire whoever he wanted on favorable contracts was another one. Pruitt is a good football coach, but he doesn't really know how to run a big program. He's learning OTJ, and if Fulmer wasn't shouldering some of the off-field responsibilities, it could be overwhelming. Fulmer's making it manageable, which allows Pruitt to focus more on recruiting.

This year's recruiting class is the tell. How far we can go and how fast we can get there depends on the next 25 guys.
I didn'tmean to insinuate they were penny pinching with Pruitt only that's been the MO in the past. I 100% agree that Pruitt is learning OTJ. I've always said, this is about recruiting. My question is, is he forced to do it the right way or the Bama way?

All I'm saying is that the reason for KY's success this year is experience. Experience can negate inexperienced talent.
Sure it can - but I’ll say again that I think the talk on Kentucky is a bit premature. They’re 6-1 and that’s impressive for sure, but they’ve only beaten one good team (Florida) and that was while Mullen was still working to get his scheme installed. They lost to a mediocre Texas A&M and are 7 point dogs to a bad Missouri team this week.

Here’s there upcoming schedule: Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, MTSU, Louisville. They might legitimately go 2-4 in that stretch.

Again, an 8 or 9 win season would be impressive by Kentucky standards. But they would’ve beaten only one good team in that group.

Their standard should not be our standard.

If Banks moves, it could be temporary. If we're going to be a power run offense, we'll need Banks back at RB next year. IDT Crouch will be at UT.

Would make no sense to move him then unless he gets on the field at lb. I don't see that happening

Lose McBride and Cox

Add EJ, Wright, Gray, Payton, Pappoe, Jammie, Kuony

We finish with 275.57 (rankings of course will change some before signing day) which would have been 10th last year.

We may upgrade at some positions also. We may lose some guys we want like Henry. It will be interesting to see where this class finishes, especially if we close out big with 7-5 or 8-4

That’s interesting for sure. I have no reason to doubt you on the money aspect - in fact, I haven’t heard anything to the contrary. Fulmer and Pruitt have had some minor squabbles from what I’ve been told but all those things get quickly resolved. Two alpha males butting heads - not an issue.

But it’s funny - everyone here knows I’m a big Jeff Brohm fan - and after their big win on Saturday I decided to ask some people about what happened with him and UT. I was told that at the last minute Tennessee asked him to pay a large portion of his Purdue buyout on his own. We had a deal in place and then someone balked on spending the money for a 6-6 Purdue coach.

Just goes to show the penny pinching mentally that once was there that hopefully Pruitt and Fulmer are changing.

Fulmer is well aware of the Bama way and knows this is what is needed (imo) as he knows what it takes to WIN (not just compete) in the SEC.

No way that story adds up with Brohm. He name was never mentioned in the info released to the public regarding Currie

Banks has the level of energy and effort we need on the field... but it's getting too risky to put the ball in his hands. A fumble could cost us any one of these last four SEC games. Moving him to D could work this year, give him time to mature, then see how the positions shake out next spring. It'll leave us short another RB, though-- not the best situation for a team that wants to run the ball.
Fumbling’s mental. Edgerrin James had an issue with the Colts...then he didn’t.

We’ll beat Ms State. I don’t want to concede that florida game but this game really proved that there’s a mental hurdle that still exists with that game. Just like with Alabama, we peed down our leg. We just don’t have it mentally in those two games. It’s weird. That’s something I think Pruitt will fix. But I’m not sure he can fix it by next year. Gonna take a while to scrub the interns stench outta this place

We have been so summarily awful against FL that we need to beat them 5 straight years in a row while absolutely breaking their will before anyone predicts a win against them.

I missed the play where he got the unsportsmanlike conduct and the safety. Did something happen that is causing this Banks to LB shift?
He didn’t get the safety. Chryst’s knee hit the ground in the end zone as he was handing off to Banks. Banks muscled it out of the end zone and then got animated with the tackler. Refs protected their masters on that one.

That’s reaching I doubt Pappoe flips here

I'm pretty much at the point where anything and everything that had to happen to get rid of the Haslam lackeys in the AD was worth it. It's the only way we'll truly improve as a football program.

No question, UT has tried to do things on the cheap in the past. But the former President, ADs and BOT were the chief penny pinchers and they're gone-- every last one of them. UT's not cheaping out on football now. And the best way to keep it like that is to show them their investment will pay off. Beating bottom-half SEC teams and finishing with a winning record should keep the money flowing.

I think if Pruitt gets money and support, he'll win big here. He (and Fulmer) know that fielding a successful college football program isn't rocket science. But it does require a lot of support behind the scenes.

Never said it should be our standard. Said it was good for KY. The only comparison I'm making with KY is that experience matters. We need talent to be successful. To be very successful to meet TN standards, that talent will need to be experienced.
