Words cannot express how much I love this quote...

We gotta football coach, fellas...
I don't know if I love this quote or not. Pruitt complained on Wednesday that the player leaders need to be better. I think it's a cool quote in a vacuum, but I think it's also and indictment on the player leaders.

Even on Vol Calls Pruitt actually said more than “me”. He did say “me” and then he went on to say that until we have more players stepping up in a leadership role that the coaches would have to provide the leadership for the team. He has been saying the same thing since he got here.

Like he said on Wednesday we do have leaders on the team, players who do the right things most of the time, but obviously those guys must not yet feel comfortable “taking over the team”.

I think this is a legitimate game we can play here on VolNation. Pruitt was asked who some of these “leaders” were and he said it wouldn’t be fair to them for him to put their names out there. Everyone may not understand that but I do; however, this is not like the mystery CB prospect so I think we can start making a list of potential leaders by identifying players who consistently do a good job (right things) in their positions most of the time.

I’ve watched both game films at least a couple of times. I’m drawing a blank. I think we have guys who do good things and flash at different times but I’m not sure I can identify someone that has played at a consistently high level in both games. Of course that’s a cop out and not acceptable so I’m going with Josh Palmer on offense and Kyle Phillips on defense. I like Marquez Callaway but I thought his blocking in the WV game sucked. He was awesome as a blocker in the ETSU game and I’d give him an assist on Palmer’s touchdown run.

The natural leaders I think on offense should be Guarantano, Trey Smith, Chance Hall, Callaway, and Jennings. On defense I’d go with Darrin Kirkland Jr, Daniel Bituli, Darrell Taylor, Nigel Warrior, Kyle Phillips, and Shy Tuttle.

When I was a kid myself in the Navy, I got promoted to the position of work center supervisor for a power plant on an aircraft carrier. There were 4 power plants on the carrier and I was coming from the best and going to the worst. The material condition of the equipment sucked. The training level of the personnel sucked. No one knew how to do anything so nothing had been gotten done. I took a junior petty officer that I knew and trusted and put him in charge (positional authority) of my work day. Everyone else was on cleanup detail, including the more senior petty officers. I took a couple guys at a time to work with me on rebuilding equipment. Little my little I’d bring guys off the cleaning crew to teach them how to operate and maintain our equipment. We had a complete turnaround in 3 months.

If you can imagine putting Jeremy Banks in charge of our football team and providing him support as a leader you’ll have an idea of my approach back in 1979. Based on what little I know he’s who I want everyone else to be like. I want unlimited fire and fight. We could probably work on instincts a bit but I’d start with the fire and fight.

To your point on Callaway, do you think he looks timid on punt return? Like he’s saving himself? I do. I understand his line of thinking and don’t have a problem with it but would like someone more aggressive back there. He’s sure handed thats probably why it’s his job.

I think maybe he's just not being aggressive in all facets of his game. Part of it may be confidence or playing it safe. He's really good at catching the ball. Against ETSU his blocking was I thought really good. He's building toward being the complete package. Look for him to take a punt to the house this week.

Mariota probably going to play Sunday. Titan Twitter blows up yesterday with “he faked an injury because he sucked against the Dolphins “

Please continue to post here. If there was a designation for highly valued poster, you would get it in my book.

I think you are spot on. I did a similar thing in my business career and it worked very well.

So in your illustration with Banks, the more experienced players who embraced the vision and "movement" would immediately step up and begin assuming natural positions of leadership through their practice work ethic, play on the field, and off field activities. Banks would continue to grow and be held up as a VFL leader who sets the tone for success. What I have seen so far is as you describe with him. When CJP addressed him after one of the TD runs and his mini-celebration you could see he looked CJP direct in the eyes and accepted his chastisement with "yes sir". That sends a message to the whole roster by both CJP as well as Banks.

That was a cheap shot that hit him in the elbow. Probably hit his funny bone. I have no doubt he really has no feeling in his fingers. But everyone is already looking towards the draft for a QB so there's that.

When I was a kid I didn’t really know what I was doing but my father was a successful businessman so I probably learned a lot more from him that I realized at the time. He was honest and fair. In the situation I had in the Navy, I think I was maybe 22 years old, the older guys in the power plant I was being assigned to, I knew I would be stepping on their toes when I put a junior guy in charge. I didn’t have a choice and I was upfront with them. I pointed out that they had seniority in the work center and that also meant they had responsibility. The condition of the power plant both in regards to material readiness and personnel training was a reflection of their not honoring their responsibility. I had no choice but to look for leadership elsewhere. Of course, eventually they came around for the most part.

The thing I think I learned most from that experience is that everyone wants to be part of a successful team. I would spend literally days in the power plant, skipping meals and sleep, working to repair all the equipment. Guys voluntarily starting bringing me food from the mess deck. Other guys would sometimes show up and ask me to let them take over whatever I was working on so I could go get some sleep. The division officer accused me of doing speed so I could keep going. I was innocent but it was so cool to hear him say that. He was dead serious. The truth is that I really just enjoyed what I was doing.

Pruitt said after the WV game guys on the team were coming up to him asking how they could help. One of the things we’ve noted in this thread is earlier in the week when Pruitt seemed dead tired. Imagine the flashbacks for some of us who have been there done that. Obviously there are no guarantees but right now I’m excited for where we are and where we can go as a football program. The goal is from worst to best in 3 years. We'll see.

Worst to first - kinda has a good ring to it. 👌🏻

So the game got moved to 11 am I guess?

Edit never mind. Looked at wrong game.

Some would say it just involves putting on your big boy pants, going to work, and getting the job done. That's leading by example, which is the only way to get anything that is lasting and of importance done IMO. When we look back later, it seems like it was the most rewarding times of our work lives. Just total single minded focus on accomplishing the mission, no matter the occupation. Hats off, brother. Thank you for your service to our country as well.

I agree completely on CJP. I got so tired of the sales pitches, stories, 'hot sauce' recruiting, etc. This is how you rebuild a program and become elite. As fans we wasted a lot of time, emotion and energy on supporting stuff that rarely works out. Sort of like Chip Kelly's run at Oregon. It may work for awhile to be new, different, eye catching. Then it doesn't work anymore because opponents figure it out. All the sales pitches ring hollow. The support of the past methods is our problem to get over, not CJP's. He already knows what works best. It is handling the basics, fundamentals, working harder, recruiting better, scheming smarter - becoming more professional at every aspect. When I know all that is happening the way it should, as a fan and donor I can sit back and enjoy the process and results. I've sold out on CJP/staff. With Phil having his back and actually doing the same things in his way in the 90's, we know they have a really good opportunity to succeed at an elite level.

If we were all at a bar, we'd tell the bartender to turn down the music so we could hear @ChattaTNVol better.
