*** Tennessee’s defensive backs spent a full period working on their pattern-matching scheme and calls for WVU’s explosive aerial attack. No specifics on the design or play stuff here, but the personnel was notable: Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Quart’e Sapp rotated at linebacker — which coincides with what we’ve also noted about Daniel Bituli sliding to BUCK linebacker in DIME situations. The DBs on the field included three freshman Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson on the outside and Trevon Flowers at safety. Micah Abernathy and Baylen Buchanan inside.

*** The OLBs did two different pass rushing stunt drills. During one rep by Jonathan Kongbo, Chris Rumph screamed, “I like it!” Moving down the line, Tracy Rocker was less than enthused with his group. Rocker was all over Shy Tuttle, Emmitt Gooden and John Mincey, the latter who was really struggling with the heat Monday.

*** Tennessee's receivers had a nice start to game week with very minimal drops, as they took passes primarily from Jarrett Guarantano (who took the first rep each time) and Kellar Chryst. Clearly, the rep distribution has changed with those two getting the bulk of the work and the receivers getting the most run where Marquez Callaway, Brandon Johnson, Tyler Byrd, Jordan Murphy, Jauan Jennings, Josh Palmer, Cedric Tillman and walk-on Malik Elion. Everyone of those receivers, with the exception of Elion, who is a track athlete, were listed in the two-deep that Tennessee released mid-day on Monday.

*** During OL work, Jahmir Johnson was at LG. Meanwhile, the tight ends were working on combo/kickout blocks with the H-backs.

*** Brandon Kennedy was working with the S&C staff during the open periods, while cornerback Kenneth George sported a black non-contact jersey but was participating in practice.

I keep seeing WV fans talking about “a 4-8 team” and even the media as well. Everyone realizes this is a new year right? I mean if we’re going there, they are a 7-6 team against an easier schedule. I’m just not scared of them and would love to shut up their obnoxious fans.

The "4-8" argument is how I'm weeding out idiots, tbh. Anyone who can't see that Butch & Co had the worst player development and roster management, along with recognizing the talent we have on board, is someone either too dumb or too lazy to yank that Athlon magazine out of their ass.

Even with questions at CB, OL, and QB, I'd take this roster over the bottom half of the SEC easily, and that includes the Mizzou and/or Kentucky squads picked to win 7 or 8, as well as the State team contrarians will try to convince you will go to the SECCG.

Want to stop the media prognosticators from being down on this team?

Beat WVU, steal away an SEC game we're not supposed to win, give Bama the hardest fought win of their season, and play with an attitude from start to finish.

I've stopped giving AF about the media and their opinions. All I care about is how they look on the field.

I think the stories of JG's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Where so many say "he hung onto the ball for too long", I say he not only exhibited toughness, but he didn't rush his reads into a more unfortunate throw. I also point to the 1.72 second average that he had to get the ball out of his hands and ask, who could have done better? Kid was sacked 26 times, including seven times against Kentucky. McBride (who everyone was fawning over last year) was sacked six times within his game and a half of PT. The OL was down to six scholarship players as our roster eroded away at the end of the season. Simply put, no one could have succeeded behind last year's pass protection.

People are mostly pissed why, because ESPN showed him pouting on the sideline against GT, and/or because they see a black QB and they expect him to run like Dobbs? The guy was a first year, second-choice starter behind an incompetent coaching staff, if you can even consider them coaches. Our receivers had stone hands last year. Again, SIX SCHOLARSHIP OFFENSIVE LINEMEN TO CLOSE OUT THE SEASON.

I wish we could all just acknowledge that this year can only be better for him, and we only have to worry about the rest of the offense pulling their weight for JG to be better.

Agree completely. Stop caring what other people say - none of them know any more than most everybody on here. Just care about what happens on the field with the team.

I'm good with JG but I also believe in honesty. It's not get sacked or throw an interception, it's called throwing the ball away.
JG also took way more sacks than QD, which is about as relevant as the McBride comparison. Nothing personal, I just want JG to become one of the greats and hope the coaches are telling him what he did wrong instead giving reasons as to why it was all ok. And yes, WGWTFA.

ESPN doesn't provide historical data on a weekly basis so everything is end of year.

Thanks for the share. A number of different talking points can be pulled out of this.

Interesting that despised Lyle's 2015 team is the best team on paper during this time span.

When compiling the Overall Efficiency was ST weighted equal to the O and D?

Can you share the formula you used to project 2018 efficiencies?

1- you gotta have time to even unload the ball to the sidelines. JG went out every single play looking to throw to receivers, not out of bounds. Maybe if his priorities were switched, he'd have taken zero sacks and also thrown for zero yards and TD's.

2- QD was working behind an OL that hadn't yet been murdered by injury. I would really like the stats on who started where in which games, but based on guys currently on the roster, I see Richmond only played/started 7, and Tatum/RyJohnson/Niehaus/Brooks/Locklear starting 3 or 4 apiece. The OL against GT/Florida (where they still struggled) versus the OL against Bama/Kentucky/LSU/Vandy were completely different outside of Trey Smith.

I'll concede that there were absolutely a handful of times where JG hung onto the ball for too long, but I'm not going to go too far with that assumption.

Joe Willy was and is a boss, SugarCC. #Realist
And you're either some weird, sad, troll, that truly needs to get out of the box and get a life(this has my vote, and most everyone else's); or you're the absolute worst Big Orange fan in the world...whichever one you're choosing to lie about, only you know. Now, run along...more than likely Zed calling for you. #ChiefGimp #That'sReal

Not gonna argue much because I'm pulling for him but the Oline thing is overplayed to a degree.
Yes the injuries piled on throughout the season. No, the Oline wasn't completely healthy up until QD got hurt then all fell apart at the exact same moment JG walked in.
At the moment JG took over, it was the same line that QD was just removed from.
