Here are Thursday’s observations (note we saw just two periods = ~9 minutes)…
ROUTES ON AIR
I charted every throw from Keller Chryst and Jarrett Guarantano today. And again, it’s quite evident in practice, even in our short sessions, as to who is emerging from the pack there.
Guarantano completed all 10 passes — slants, outs, in-routes, corners and arrow routes — even showing some better touch on shorter throws. Only one time did a receiver have to really make a nice grab, too.
Conversely, Chryst was erratic Thursday. He took two more reps than JG, jumping back in line following a poor throw or drop. He finished the routes on air period 7-for-12. He did have two balls dropped (Marquez Callaway and Tyler Byrd), but Chryst also threw high once and had two more worm burners into the ground for incompletions.
Again, the routes on air period are not the end-all, be-all, but as has been the case early in fall camp, one quarterback has been much sharper than the rest.
NO FUMBLES!
Tight ends coach Brian Niedermeyer was hounding his group running through the blaster Thursday, screaming, “High and tight! There won’t be any fumbles from this group!”
After a couple poor technique efforts from Dominick Wood-Anderson and James Brown, Niedermeyer made his entire unit do up-downs.
Also on Thursday, the tight ends worked with the chute on run blocking drills.
THIS & THAT
*** I didn’t spend much time at all watching the OLBs, but during one rep, Chris Rumph was giving Dillon Bates the business. He made Bates redo the rep and was all over him about his effort.
*** The wideouts worked on downfield run blocking early during the first period.
*** Jennings did not participate in any routes on air today.
*** Tracy Rocker still got on some guys (notably John Mincey and Kingston Harris), but overall, Tennessee’s DL coach was in a much better mood today. The group was working on ripping through blocks, with Matthew Butler, Alexis Johnson and Kyle Phillips all eliciting compliments from Rocker. “There you go! I like it,” Rocker shouted. While Mincey didn’t receive the same praise, the freshman is having a solid camp and looks to be a potential contributor early for the Vols.
