From reading the quotes it sounds like to me Byrd likes to use his eyes too much and is more suited for safety. Certainly not the narrative we had heard here for a long time

If you paid attention to what Pruitt said leading up to spring camp, it was clear Pruitt planned on trying Byrd out at safety though.

If you listen to/ read what Pruitt said about Byrd, CFA, and Blakely’s position changes pre-spring, he said they’d be looking at CFA at corner and Byrd “somewhere in the secondary.” So it’s clear the staff wasn’t expecting Byrd to be a corner.

And honestly, it makes sense. Byrd was a Safety in HS. Safety is a spot he’d likely see an easier transition than CB. If you wanna take advantage of his athleticism, you put him where you think he can excel, not necessarily where you have the biggest need.

I wonder why all the services had him as a CB when he didn't play that in hs. Lord knows this board has him pegged as a great CB.

I don't see him starting at safety.

A lot of services had him as an athlete. He played CB at one of the All Star games and did well, though.

At safety, I’m not sure if I see him starting either. But at the same time I’m not sure any of our safeties other than Warrior are a sure thing there. Abernathy was ok in 2016, but terrible last year. There’s been some speculation that he or Jackson might get some looks at NB. If Kelly gets healthy, he’s a guy they can probably count on to be in the right place, but athletically he’s not really what you want back there. Byrd is probably the best athlete of the bunch though. If he shows some promise in the spring, then maybe the light comes on for him at some point. Maybe he turns out to be a bit of a gamer at Safety. Who knows.

The idea of Warrior and Byrd at safety is nice, though. Would be the most athletic tandem we’ve had at safety since Berry and Janzen Jackson. No doubt Byrd still has a long way to go, though.

Random positive--- Ate lunch with a customer today in Jackson TN... our Waitress was Emmit Gooden's first cousin, who she said she considered herself more like his sister since the families lived together for many years... She said he is very excited to finally be playing for UT and is more focused and fired up than people think or will expect. He didn't like being out at Independence C.C. and told family many times he didn't play up to his potential because he got a little depressed/homesick with the situation he had put himself in. She said "I am telling you he is country strong and ready to contribute"....

Good Stuff!

Starts out behind Tuttle at nose. Plays his way into a lion’s share of the snaps.

I think warrior and Jackson are the guys to start but Abernathy and TKjr have played a lot of football and that means something.

Byrd could possibly not even be in the two deep

Eh we’ll see. Definitely depends on what happens. With Abernathy and Jackson.

If the light comes on for Byrd, there’s no reason he shouldn’t see the field in somebody capacity. That might be a big if, though.

You sound disappointed that predictions ON THIS BOARD weren’t 100% spot on! Awareness of your own mortality? Next thing you know, the baseball Vols will be winning even tho you predicted doom for their foul mouthed coach.

Jim Haslam played for Neyland. Jimmy Haslam is his son. Three generations of Haslams and their spouses are UT legacies and donors. They're not going anywhere.

You think they'll try to remove Davenport and Fulmer within the next couple of years? Or maybe sooner?

Emerson’s a beast! Are you predicting nose? I still see DE or DT in that 3-4 set.

Ideally I think he’d be a 3-4 DE, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we have to play him at nose some. But then again, I’m not exactly what sure what we’re going to be seeing from our front 7 in how they line up.

I definitely think Gooden and Emerson steal snaps from some guys who’ve been on campus for a while, though.

Or could that hint at (no, I’m ok...put down the jacket)...DEPTH?

I think Davenport will be ready to move on... and it'll be hard to oust Fulmer if he gets the marquee programs back on track. It's already apparent that he's going to invest the resources to do that.

KNOXVILLE — As most of his players left campus to go home for spring break earlier this month, Jeremy Pruitt did the same.

The 43-year-old first-year Tennessee football coach returned to his hometown of Rainsville, Ala., and left with a special memento from the place where he learned the game of football.

An estimated crowd of more than 300 people packed the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center on Rainsville's Main Street — just two miles down the road from Plainview High School — on March 10 as Pruitt was awarded a key to the city.

"There were more people there that night wearing Tennessee orange than I could imagine being in Rainsville," said Jerry Clifton, the event's emcee. "It was amazing."

Clifton said there were a number of people at the ceremony wearing shirts with Pruitt's already famous slang term "aight" emblazoned on the front. Those attending including Pruitt's former coaches at Plainview High and several local politicians.

Pruitt's small-town football roots help explain why so many area high school coaches have been present early during Tennessee's spring practice session. Tennessee will hold its annual coaches clinic this weekend that will draw high school coaches from around the region.

But even during routine weekday practices, local prep coaches have been a common sight on the Haslam Field sideline.

"One thing about our staff is there is seven of us who started out as high school coaches," Pruitt said. "It's going to be open-door to high school coaches all the time. It helped me as a high school coach. People were good to me and gave me an opportunity to go watch practice and sit in meetings and grow as a coach.

"We want to do the same thing here. We want to be the most accessible program to the high school coaches in all the United States."

Jeremy Pruitt invited Clifton and a few other old friends from Rainsville to Tennessee's practice Tuesday. Among the group who drove up was Ralph Burke, who reflected fondly on the night that honored Rainsville's now-famous native son with a key to the city.

"They told some good stories about how Jeremy got some of his nicknames," Burke said. "We'll just leave it at that. We had a few laughs, and I think it was just an opportunity for that town to say, 'Hey, man, we're proud of you. We're just proud of you.' They turned out and it was good. It was great."

Though the oversized key was the main prize, Pruitt landed another gift at the event.

Former Rainsville mayor Roy Sanderson — one of the town's biggest Tennessee fans — presented Pruitt with a pair of orange and white checkerboard overalls.

Depends on how guys like Butler, Bennett, Crosby, and Johnson come along.

I’m not really sure we’re gonna get a whole lot out of those guys this year. Hopefully I’m wrong though.

Where is Gray in all of this?

It's not big Jim. I guess you can argue that he should have control over his son, but my understanding is that this is mostly Jimmy.

You are correct. I have known big Jim since the late 70's. He loves UT and has given them millions of dollars. For a long time, nothing happened in the AD without his approval. Those days are over now. If there are any problems created by the Haslam family now, they are coming from his kids.

Emerson may actually end up being the starter at some point. He just moves and looks different. He’s like a baby fletcher cox when he was at state.

I’m sure you’d know better than I do. I’m going off of nothing more than video snippets we’ve seen thus far. But Emerson looks like he’s clearly in another league than most of the DL we have on campus right now. Idk what his ceiling may be, but he looks ready to contribute NOW IMO.
