Anyone have advice for low back pain? I had a spinal fusion done on my back almost 6 years ago and had recovered great with no issues and was cleared to do anything I wanted years ago. Anyway, I was lifting yesterday morning and felt something pop or shift when I was re-racking a set of weights and instantly felt pain and couldn’t move my back. I manged to get to the ER for Xrays and they said my spinal fusion looked fine, but my lower back is still absolutely killing me and I can’t bend or twist it. The ER recommended seeing the doctor who performed my spinal fusion to see if I could get a MRI but it will take weeks to get an appt with him. Any help/advice is appreciated.

I'm scheduled for back surgery is about 3 weeks. My problem is a pinched nerve between L4 and L5. Started with lower back pain, moved down my left leg and stayed there. No fusion necessary with my surgery but he will remove some bone from L4 and L5 and clean up anything around the nerve. I will not be lifting any weights down the road though. Gonna be down for about six weeks if surgery goes well. Good luck with your situation.

I would call the doctor. Tell them what happened and maybe they will work you in. Especially if the pain starts to radiate down your leg(s). I work patients in all the time when they have a new injury...
When was your fusion?
Ask your family doc to call in a Medrol dose pack.
Ice the heck out of it. Try Cryotherapy if there is a provider near you.
Thanks. My surgery was in 2012. L5-S1 fusion. All my pain is in my low back and both hips. Before this incident yesterday I’ve had no problems at all. It was like I never even had surgery and I was cleared to do anything I wanted years ago. I have no idea what happened because I was just re-racking a pair of weights and I felt something pop and instantly felt immense pain and couldn’t move my back at all. The weights weren’t even heavy and it’s something I do 4-5 days a week for the past 3 years. Today my back doesn’t feel any better. I’m managing to walk around a little, but still can’t bend or twist.

What level was your fusion?
Sounds like a new disc injury. Doesn’t mean more surgery. Definitely need therapy with a McKenzie certified therapist.
At 2012, if you haven’t seen the surgeon in 3 years, then you are considered a new patient.
This time of year, always easier to get new patient appointments due to insurance rollover date...
Would call first thing in the morning.

My dad's doc gave him 2 exercises that help us a ton. Work better on the floor but can be done on a bed with relatively firm mattress. The first you lay on your back and with feet on the floor raise your knees. Move the knees away from each other and back. About 25 reps or work your way up to it. Doing extra reps does not seem to help. The other is again on your back, knees together, try to bring your knees slowly as close to your chest as you can. Try to do at least eight to ten reps the first time. You can do 25 reps as well. Probably not more than 3 or 4 times a day on the last exercise. These always help my dad and myself and have saved us many trips to the doctor . Some of the times I thought, no way it will work this time, always has. It's worth a try.

Thanks. I live in NJ, about 20 mins from Philadelphia. I had one of the best surgeons in the country do my back surgery and I absolutely love him. The problem is getting an appointment with him is like pulling teeth because he’s always booked solid. Even when I have an appt I spend 3-4 hours in the office waiting to see him. I’m hoping when I call tomorrow morning and say it’s an emergency they’ll be able to see me a lot quicker than the usual 4-8 weeks it normally takes to see him.

I have had a sitting job most of my adult life. I began having back trouble when I was about 30. I have tried about everything short of surgery since then. The only thing that has provided long-term relief is physical therapy, stretching and exercise, with an emphasis on exercise. I guess you could also throw in the resulting weight loss.

Our bodies are not really made to deal with a lot of extra weight, long-term. They are really not made for too much inactivity either. So, certainly go to your doctor. Do what you've got to do, but if you are not already doing the above things, I would suggest that you focus on them for the rest of your life. I have re-learned these same lessons over and over again.

Having said all that, I am no doctor. Some conditions may make these suggestion impossible to follow. So, certainly see a doctor first. I am just saying that the natural ways are usually best, if they are possible at all.

Go to the doc before you go to crazy with any exercises. Prescribed exercises can be very different based on the injury. While I don’t think a McKenzie certification is the perfect treatment to low back pain it will make sure you get a good physical therapist who is competent and knows his stuff about low back pain. That was a good suggestion by a previous poster/PT

My favorite summer Olympic sport.

Yep. It's double betterer because my wife can't complain about me watching scantily clad women...because... it's a sport.

She opens her mouth to say something and I say, "Shhhhhhh....I'm watching sports".
