Recruiting Forum Football Talk LVI

Florida and FSU are both top 5 jobs in the country and both new coaches had their fair share of problems. FSU has a nice class at 11. FL has a nice class at 14. Do you really think there is THAT big of a difference in the 14th and 20th class? No.

Anytime FSU or FL are out of the top 10 recruiting their fans freak. It’s not rocket science.

Tom Herman at Texas last year was around 30th in recruiting. They are top 5 now. Put the knife down, BRO.

Florida hasn’t had a top 10 recruiting class since 2014. Mullen has then right where they’ve been accustomed to being over the last 5 years with only 2 months.

He’s gonna do very well there.

No way Pruitt thought that he would walk in here day one after this grease fire and pull in ample elite talent in 3 months. This is more about building relationships with future classes/hs coaches and letting everyone know that TN is a good place to send your kid/player again.

We got some players to be excited about coming in and some good players on campus working harder than they have since they’ve been here. Trust the process.

I disagree. He had relationships with these guys already. His biggest problem was where he was recruiting to...UT. We are a s***show of a program right now. We have some of the most incompetent administrators in the NCAA running the show. When Davenport had to talk to the media after the Schiano ordeal, she looked (because she was) surprised at how big a deal the football hire was, and more importantly, how big a deal it was that she, and others, botched it.

That's where we are at right now. We have administrators who have zero concept of what it takes to win, mainly because they don't care and are bought out by the highest bidder. Pruitt walked into a s*** storm thinking his great recruiting staff would take over, especially on defense. What he's now realized is that every SEC school can easily negatively recruit UT, and who could blame them? We gave the entire NCAA enough ammo to supply the Marines for the next century. Facts are, many players hear things or see things about UT and don't want any part of playing here.

I was glad to see him edgy and pissed today. I know some of the recruits had already told them, but I wonder if he thought some of the recruits played UT a little?

I wonder if he was edgy because he just found out about the issues with Norwood

It happens all the time. Especcially now with social media, getting followers and stuff. I’m sure he thought we were gonna land 1 or 2 guys that we didn’t but that happens.

I’m more excited about seeing players like Kirkland, Warrior, chandler etc with coaches that have a proven track record of great defenses or offense.

I didn't get to see any interviews today. I did see some of the recruits troll us tho with their announcements.
Did CJP act a bit pissed with today's outcome? More so edgy than he normally is?

I will probably by tomorrow, but right now I don't want to hear excuses... Either way if you believe or don't believe Pruitt can rebound with '19 class and this team for the fall, he has an uphill battle for sure now.

Putting together a top 10 class in 2019 is far less of a challenge then putting together this class. It’s just like building a house. It’s easier to start from nothing sometimes then to try and remodel an old house.

If there weren't two separate signing the freak out woul be less because you would be thinking of thenplayers we did sign as one whole instead of split. Also would have had more time with more targets if they didn't sign early

I loved pruiit firing back about CBs. That one statement just showed the difference in him and Butch. Butch would have made an excuse and sent a recruiting message about how bad it looks. Pruitt gets pissed and says our guys now can handle it. That right there will get your current team behind you real quick

Man this place is crazy sometimes. How many thought we would finish around 20 when he was hired? Seemed to be consensus. Early signing period went greats and people hoped for a top 15 finish or pipe dream top 10.

I am interested in how he develops and then how he is going forward in recruiting.

Same as I feel today, which is I have no idea how Pruitt will do here, but I have my doubts about his offensive staff choices. Difference being in your scenario vs what happened, if you hire Pruitt while being truthful then the negative backlash we received would have never happened. All we needed was for our AD to be truthful and say look, here is where we are, Gruden isn't an option, and we are going after a coach who's familiar with the SEC and has coached in the conference. Are people dancing in the streets about that, no, but how many are dancing right now? Moreover, you don't blow smoke then hire Schiano. I know what I'm getting with him, which is a better X and O Butch Jones who's overall record doesn't point to anything special. I'm more open to Pruitt and his familiarity with the SEC than I am with someone like Schiano. That's just me, and that's been debated about 1000X on here by now.

Fair enough but we have a New AD who’s a proven champion. We have a proven champion defensive coach. And we also have a support staff that has increased by about 50% than it was before. So we have more eyes, coaches, evaluators, strength staff etc than we’ve ever have. We’re actually ready and eqiuipted to compete for tiles now. That’s the most important thing to focus on

My very likely unpopular random thoughts on NSD18

  • Today sucked. And I don't know how to interpret that. I mean, Mullen had a much better class and a much better offseason overall. Taggert had a better class. Those are two coaches who took over teams who had similar dumpster fire seasons. So I don't know how to respond to this class.
  • I can't believe after all the love OG (early), Eddie Smith (middle), and ITS (late) showed me, that we whiffted on all of them. Further more, we couldn't even get Taiyon Palmer. Our only signed corner is a low 3 star project.
  • I don't want to judge a kid too harshly, but I probably will anyways. Quay Walker is a piece of ****. Nothing the Volunteers did in any way, slighted him. Instead they made him a priority, wined and dined, offered him an amazing opportunity - and he does what he did? Throwing the hat across the gym? I hope Banks does him like Bo did Bosworth.
  • Grant and Young can kiss my ass as well. Should've decommited as soon as they knew - and they both knew before today.
  • I'm sorry but I'm having a really hard time being optimistic about landing so many projects - and despite the HUDL film gurus who want to say Tillman is the next Brandon Marshall/Anquan Bolden... or the people insisting every low ranked kid is only low ranked because he didn't camp or insert other excuse here. Meanwhile Florida put together a better class and Georgia literally put together the greatest class every assembled.
  • I am embarrassed with how many hours I spent on this forum since the summer, and how much I consumed the visit recaps, the war room updates, the player tweets, etc etc etc. In the end, it was all for naught. From the booming of the much anticipated Martinez commitment to the rave reviews ITS visit... all of it meant nothing.
  • My question is, is it always like this? This is my first year following recruiting heavily. I know this season was unique because of the coaching change/early signing period... but seriously... I'm not even talking about back in the summer (although applicable), week to week, hell even day to day, it was a constantly and drastically changing roller coaster. What? Two weeks ago Eddie Smith and his mom are in Vols gear with huge smiles. Week later he cuts off contact with our coaches. OG is flashing the Vols sign three weeks ago. We weren't even in the race not long after that. Jordan Young is peer recruiting for our class as he arrives to FSU, then insta-flips.

What was the point of me (then) paying for those War Room updates? Why was I following recruits on twitter, trying to guage their interest? Why was I checking threads at every still moment, searching for updates? None of it mattered.
  • I'm sorry, but everyone who claims to be a sourced up message board insider is full of ****. Be it AtlantaVol with his "Vol ;)" post in the Quay Walker thread, or JAllen saying we were getting Campbell and Griffin. Or that UTVolax guy. All just seeking e-cred.
  • I'm sorry. I came into today with high hopes, but am largely disappointed. Maybe I set the bar too high. Maybe I ate the cheese. We landed more projects with weak offer lists today than we did blue chip talent, and it is frustrating. I'm frustrated. That is all.

19 class has to be a success. No question.

If we have a top 10 class next year I'll be extremely pleased.

That being said given our challenges I think it is a little too optimistic. We will probably be 15 to 20.

It's going to be a long year or two on the field. I just don't see us getting the results needed to pull those type classes yet.
