Recruiting Forum Football Talk LIII

He’s used to the speed of the game and naturally a CB. I like him a lot on defense. Kid should’ve been on defense day 1. Was the best player in the Army All-American game for a reason.

I get myself mad thinking about how he's been used here. He should have always been an option at cornerback.

I think he could still be really good, maybe even right away. Hopefully Pruitt being a former DB coach helps him make that transition easier. He moves and runs and looks like a CB. Great size, speed and instincts. It looked like we had an elite corner coming out of that army game. But of course Butch decided to use him as a blocker and give him two or three touches a game on offense. It's not like we were filled to the brim with great corners. We were always waiting for one to emerge. All the while Byrd is stuck in a 10 man rotation at WR. 😕

The bright side is that Pruitt seems like he wants to simplify the mental aspect so that the players aren't out there second guessing themselves and playing on their heels. He lets his best athletes fly around the field and make athletic plays. That's not what we've been watching the last few years. I think it's gonna get really fun again.

Yup...he threw for 560 yards.

Yeah on 56 passes. He was good but the other guy was dropping bombs. I think he threw close to 500 yds on 16 of 30 with 5 tds and no ints. They should have won but that was an amazing game. Manvel has some athletes though. That wr going to a & m looked unstoppable until that last play coming up a titan yard short. Hahaha

I’m not expecting Crosby to roll out at 8% body fat, but I’m not expecting anything from him till there is evidence he is taking the nutrition program serious.

Allen Carsen was big too...

Their tape looked a little different tho

He has/had work to do for sure but Carson and Crosby are not even on the same planet when it comes to athleticism.

This, even without looking at the tape, a Dooley project that had one offer and was out of the top 1000 is not even comparable to a top 250 player that had many other legitimate power 5 offers.

Hard for me to be that high on Byrd. Maybe after he’s had a year under his belt at CB in the SeC.

I agree it is a wait and see. But coming out of HS he appeared elite in the AS game and HS highlights. Will depend on his willingness to work at it.

I know you are around the program. Does Byrd work hard at practice and off the field? Just cannot understand why the previous staff didn’t manufacture some touches.

He always did well in scrimmages and practice. I really don’t know what happened come game time.

I know it seems too simplistic to some, but it is a matter of natural instincts. Not many, but a handful of guys have it for both sides of the ball. Byrd doesn't. His natural reaction is to hit, not avoid being hit. He reacts to what he sees instead of creating reactions. As Ainge keeps saying on his show, you are who you are. Coaching can only help so much.

I kept hammering this for years on here and BrB was nearly always in agreement. An example was Evan Berry being a natural on offense. He tried to avoid contact and ran to openings, not congestion. The ball in his hands, which were soft and good, did not slow him down. But having him on D was not natural for him, to get in somebody's grill and blow them up. He's not Eric.

Another recent one was M-Teague. He could not do press coverage because his natural instincts were to avoid contact. He would have been a solid slot if the coaches had left him there.

There are exceptions, though. As an example it's different going from D-line to O-line many times. If the players are able to comprehend schemes and blocking assignments it can really work out well due to their natural aggression, leverage and hand skills. Same with moving big RB's and safeties to LB at times. There are several players that were LB's that have converted to RB's due to roster injuries and have done well. Many played both ways in HS and were able to slip right into the role.

Terrence Cody might be a better comparison. He can have an impact and still only be a 1st/2nd down player
