Recruiting Forum Football Talk LIII

Reading some comments from other fans (mainly UGA) on how they think they're champs until at least 19 (when they think UF will compete) and how they think we're done for a long time (yet UF isn't because well??) is pissing me off.

We're nowhere close to as bad as we performed last year and our roster is still decent with Pruitt pulling in JUCOs to plug holes. We may not be in a position to be the favorite but the talent level is still there to compete with everyone in the East, including UGA. Yes, we'll be underdogs but not so much that a win is out of reach or that we should be written off as an auto-win (although I really hope they buy their own hype and take us for granted).

I've seen UGA manage to thrive this season despite not being a good X and Os team and having holes in their secondary. Things aligned perfectly for them in that they simply didn't play many teams that could exploit their weaknesses (Auburn was it and rematches rarely go well for the initial winner). They had a great schedule and a ton of returning starters. They may well manage another East title next season but it won't be as easy as it was this season.

And to be honest... I feel like this is the weakest playoff group we've seen. No one is really dominate in CFB this year. I think that's why Bama was included despite not winning the SEC but CFB in general was in a slump this season.

I think mayfield is going to EXPLOIT their average secondary. Nobody on their schedule came close to having good passing game except mizz and they lit them up in the first hand. I expect ou to load the box and make fromm beat them. I expect ou to win big.

Pruitt quote on signing day from UT Sports Info:

“We are very excited to welcome this group of outstanding young men who signed with us today,” Pruitt said. “They are terrific football players, who also display exceptional character off the field. We appreciate the commitment they have made to the University of Tennessee. They will be the foundation for our first signing class here. We said we were going to build a fence around the state and this is a good start. We also know that Tennessee is a national brand, and it’s exciting that some of these players from across the country will be wearing the ‘T’ on their helmets. We hope to have a few more guys sign these next two days, too.

"We know we still have a lot of work to do on the recruiting trail, as we will sign several more players in February, but today is a great way to begin. We will get back to work when I return n January. I want to thank Vol Nation for all of the support these first two weeks on the job. I am honored and humbled to be your head coach, and I’m looking forward to devoting all of my time to our football team following the College Football Playoff.”

With only 16 commits/signees we have jumped to #26 in the 247 composite. #8 in the SEC, #4 in the SEC East (UGA,FL,USCe).

#1 UGA has 23 commits/signees
#14 FL has 15 commits/signees
#16 USCe has 23 commits/signees

Lots of room to catch up pass at least USCe and maybe FL.

Not bad for 12 days.

Ziti digging through the couch cushions and coin jar today...

“Where are them dang bitcoins at?”

Scene fades in to a standard American living room. Focus on a coffee table with lamp and UT mug.
A couch pillow flys through the air, knocking the lamp from the table, breaking it with a loud crash.
Camera pans left to show a couch in front of a television airing the nightly news.
A man emerges from the couch, hair disheveled, glasses askew, he triumphantly holds aloft a slip of paper containing a username and password.

Ziti has unlocked his bitcoin account.

Focus shifts to the television where the news anchor reports that the bubble has finally burst on Bitcoin and that the value has returned to about $7.

Our hero looks at his broken, $40 lamp, sighs, and collapses back to the couch in defeat.

That's the thing about it... UGA has played slaw-offenses all season with only Auburn challenging them (and curb-stomping them the first time around), a good offense and decent defense beats UGA. And while I think Kirby is a great CEO type coach, I don't think he's very good as an Xs and Os coach. OTOH, Coach Lincoln Riley is exceptional Xs and Os guy.

Both coaches have never been on the big stage as the main guy but both have been there in a coordinator role. UGA looked shell shocked under the lights at the start of the SECCG. If they come out like that against Oklahoma they'll find themselves in a hole quickly and I don't think Fromm can dig them out of it.

But what pisses me off most isn't that they or anyone else is doing well this season. It's that they've assumed that our program is completely dead and not returning. They have no fear of Pruitt doing a thing and think we're far worse off than we are.

I will say this about the groups that hangs out in this thread:

1. I would help any one of you hide the body - no questions asked.
2. I would go to war with any one of you at my side.
3. I'm stealing Ziti's bitcoins to buy myself a nice ride, pimp it out, and throw an RF party. He can have them back once he realizes his password is 'password.' :)

Pruitt is a huge upgrade over Butch he will make us a better football team. I expect OU to beat them by 2-3 TD's, unless Georgia gets a lead early and that running attack starts grinding up OU's defense and shortens the game

But clinging to Kirby isn't a good X and O coach and Puritt is much better is more of a hope than a fact. To be fair neither looked very good against Watson and Clemson the last 2 NC games. But Pruitt will have us playing more physical, not sure about faster because of the new scheme, next fall. Georgia will be a tough matchup for us in Athens, Fromm will likely have more freedom and we won't be able to load the box to stop the run. Yes I know Chubb and Michel are gone, but Swift is no slouch and they have the #1 and 3 backs coming in to go alone with the returning backs. We have to win the turnover battle, something Pruitt works hard at, to stay in the game.

To be fair, I wasn't comparing Kirby to Pruitt but to OU's HC Lincoln Riley who is a 'boy wonder/prodigy' type coach on offense. Overall, I think Kirby is mediocre at best when it comes to Xs and Os but I don't really know much in terms of how Pruitt will be since he's never been an HC before.

UGA loses a lot of players next year, not just Chubb and Michel but some of their LBs and defenders. I don't know how we'll stack up against them because I honestly can't figure out how good or bad our talent is on offense (I think Scott was the worst OC we've ever had given the results and that the playcalling was atrocious but we obviously had OL problems, especially late in the season).

Figuring things out on defense is just as problematic because the wheels came completely off last season. I think there were problems between Butch and Shoop from day one and the result was pretty much disaster most of the time. But that doesn't tell me much about what we have and I think Pruitt will find a way to field a much better defense.

UGA *should* beat us next season and very much be favored against us. I don't mind that as much as them thinking that our program is outright dead forever with no coming back.

Before the early signing period was introduced coaching a playoff game would potentially assist with recruiting. Now NSM.

When looking at 247, keep in mind they still list Flint and Grant as commits, and some are saying they've been processed. Then there's D. Lit. I hope we keep him, but apparently he's in danger of being processed as well.

5. Tennessee: Jeremy Pruitt didn't need to go dominate the day in his first effort at Tennessee, but he had to be productive -- and he was just that. He landed two highly-recruited prospects out of his home-state, beating Nebraska and UCLA for a big back to help him move towards a power run game in Jeremy Banks. He landed his teammate Jerome Carvin by beating Mississippi State late in the game. He landed a quarterback in former Cal commit JT Shrout. And the gem of the class was beating Alabama on four-star JUCO tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson.

I took a look at their roster and they lose their top 2 rushers and leading receiver, plus 1 OL and a backup OL. They lose quite a bit more on the other side, a CB, a S, a DL and 2 LB, plus one who is likely leaving early. . When it comes to X's and O's, I don't think Saban is going to out scheme many folks, unless you consider putting such an overwhelming amount of talent on the field that no matter how good a scheme or gameplan the other team has they can't overcome the talent. Bear Bryant always said it's more about the Jimmys and Joes than the X's and O's. That is the path Kirby is on.

With a full staff and over a month to recruit and build relationships I look for a strong finish to this class.

The max anyone can sign now is 25 right? No more back counting?

Yesterday was an exciting day. I know it is discouraging to see Georgia loading the coffers, but right now our goal is to get better as a football team, and that was excessively accomplished today. This football season will be Pruitt's business card for getting elite talent. We don't have to beat Georgia or Alabama. We just have to prove to recruits that they will be well coached and developed at Tennessee. An elite recruiting staff with results on the field and playing time to sell will be a perfect storm. It should be a really fun ride, but you have to have the accurate perspective of where we are at and enjoy the ride of where we are hopefully headed.

Never happen on VN. If he goes 7-5 or 8-4 next year, 25% on here will be calling for his head...

My autistic son has more patience than VN...
