Sounds like they had to check to see if the heads and block were cracked. Typical protocol for over heating vehicles if you drove on it for a while. Was it making any noises?

Sorry for inquiring so much. I have ideas of what it could be. Back in the day, I stopped short of getting my ASE certification. Hardest part about fixing cars is having the right tools for the job.

I don't know on the fluid/oil part. I do know oil for sure and that it was bone dry. Even after I put several quarts of oil in - it was like it didn't register but at that point I didn't think to look for a leak.

What was weird was even after adding oil the dipstick was dry as could be.

The heat light flashed simultaneously with the oil light but I don't think the car ever overheated. It's a VW and their sensors are insanely sensitive. I only made one short trip ~1mile to get the oil. And then the next day a short trip of about ~3-4 to the shop when it was still acting strange.

I didn't hear any strange noises at all but I did feel a loss of power. It's a stick shift and it felt like I needed to be two gears higher than normal.

We own both our cars. Paid cash. Both are reliable. Even have "fancy" stuff like cruise control and a backup camera. Of course paying cash and owning both our cars started with buying and driving a 1996 Ford Taurus for $2000 in 2005. Since then we save money. Sell the car and add it to the money we saved. Use that to buy the next car.

Everyone isn’t different. Cars are more important to some people. Doesn’t have to be as a status symbol, some people just like cars. As a hobby or whatever.

I do agree that it’s wise to be smart about car purchases and from a strictly financial standpoint everything you said is correct. But people like what they like and most people have some sort of a vice, or financial bugaboo. May be golf, cars, sporting events, clothes (for women and metrosexuals 😁 )

They probably gave him and idea of what’s wrong with it. It probably sounded like gibberish to him. Some people have no clue about stuff like that.

As a mechanic, are you telling me you’ve never told anyone what you THINK is wrong with a car and given them a rough estimate, but said you would know more after you get it torn down?

Anyway, I don’t believe he is lying. Nobody is forcing anyone to give anything.

You know what screw it I'll just hop on the car debate. I think once self driving cars hit uber you will see the cost drop to the point where not owning a car will be a lot more reasonable and you can just uber anywhere you want whenever you want. Basically taking the fixed cost out of the car decision.

Thoughts?

I remember a few years ago I took my truck to get an oil change because I didn't have time to do it myself before my family and I were going on vacation. Car was there for about 30 minutes...so I go back to pick it up and the guys hands me an estimate bill of about 1500 bucks worth of work that he says needed to be done to my truck. I laughed at him and was like...how did you figure all that out in the half hour you had my truck?...

He said...uh well...we do a full inspection on every vehicle that we do oil changes...I was like oh really...you're full of **** brother..and ripped up the estimate and left on the front desk.

I try to do all the work on my vehicles myself...unless it's something I can not figure out how to do.

I have always felt it wasn't Biblical to question the hearts and motives of the needy. God directs us to Help when we can and it's up to Him to sort out the rest.

I have a 16 Sorento. I was skeptical of Kia when I first started looking at them but I have been very pleased. Most comfortable car I have ever had and drives great. Haven’t had a single problem with it so far.

It is still up to us to be responsible and to not be foolish with our money.

So yes in many cases it's appropriate to give and then what they choose to do with what we give them is between them and God.

It's also up to us to be good stewards with what God gives us. Giving money that you know isn't going anywhere but to a bottle or drugs isn't helping anyone or anything.

I took my drive down from 60 minutes one way to 30 and I felt like a world beater lol. Couldn’t imagine 100!! IT was Nashville for me too, hated that drive. I prefer to live in the sticks and avoid all traffic!!

All good points. At the end of the day though, I feel my good deed comes from the heart, and I feel it’s for God to judge those that take advantage. There are some more obvious cases for skepticism, but sometimes, most times, it’s harder to tell. A couple bucks is never going to hurt me.

Same. Getting out of that Nashville traffic has definitely improved my quality of life.

He says they’ll know more Wednesday.. as if they sent a part off to a lab for testing. It dosnt work like this. They know what the problem is as soon as they give you a bill or an estimate. It’s not a game of wait and see.

Just throwing my opinion out there I’d hate for good people to get beat just the same.

Actually not entirely true, sometimes they can identify the part or component that is malfunctioning without knowing the remedy right away. Sometimes they know the remedy but are waiting on a response from higher up to see if the warranty will cover. My Suburban had an issue with one of the pistons(if I recall correctly), my local mech told me to take it to the dealer as it was under warranty. Dealer did the repair then it happened again. Second go around, they said it was the same issue but they needed time to research since the first repair didn't hold. Then they asked for more time to see if GM would replace the engine outright. So I got several, "We will know more Wednesday" type responses when I called to inquire. It happens.

And for the group, it was a certified used car bought at a dealer for about 40% of the cost of a new one. Best way to buy a "new" car, imo. Let someone else drive the bugs off it, normally during a lease, then I get a low mileage car that is under dealer warranty at a very good price. Bought in 2008, paid off in 2012, put about $500 per year in overall maintenance, $1500 the years it needs new tires. I'm planning on it lasting another 10 years easily.
